Do Soundcards Reduce CPU Usage? What to Know About DSP, Drivers, and Performance

A soundcard does not automatically free up CPU. Learn when hardware DSP can offload audio processing, what ASIO changes, and what to check before buying.

Sometimes—but only when the soundcard or audio interface performs the relevant work on its own DSP or hardware audio engine. A device that simply handles audio input and output does not automatically move a DAW’s native plug-ins off the computer’s CPU. ASIO can improve the driver communication path and help with latency, but it is not proof of hardware processing.

When a soundcard can reduce CPU usage

CPU offload depends on where the audio processing actually runs. Microsoft distinguishes software audio effects, which run on the main CPU, from effects implemented on a hardware DSP. Microsoft notes that CPU use and power consumption may be lower with a hardware DSP, but the device, driver and application must support and use that processing path.

On Windows, supported streams can bypass the software audio engine and be routed to a hardware audio engine. That path is not universal: it depends on device and driver capabilities, and a hardware engine may support only a limited number of streams. Other streams can continue through software. See Microsoft’s Audio Processing Object architecture documentation and its hardware-offloaded audio processing guidance.

The distinction is not simply onboard versus dedicated, or internal versus external. An interface may provide conversion, inputs and outputs, and driver communication without accelerating arbitrary effects or other programs. Onboard audio can also include software effects that still use the host CPU.

What DSP offload looks like in practice

Universal Audio illustrates a specific supported path: its UAD DSP plug-ins require compatible UAD-2 hardware and run on that hardware’s DSP, while its native plug-ins run on the computer’s CPU. The Apollo x8 product page describes onboard HEXA Core DSP for running UAD plug-ins. This is an example of offload for compatible plug-ins—not a guarantee that every DAW track, plug-in or task moves off the host CPU. Universal Audio explains the distinction in its UAD Native and UAD DSP plug-in guide.

Even with a DSP-equipped device, native plug-ins and other DAW work may continue to use the computer CPU. The DSP itself also has a finite processing capacity, so check which plug-ins use it and how many instances the hardware can handle.

ASIO affects the driver path, not where plug-ins run

ASIO is a driver and communication path between an audio application and a device; it is not a DSP accelerator. Image-Line describes ASIO as allowing FL Studio to communicate more directly with an audio device than the standard Windows driver path, while noting that this benefit is largely separate from the hardware’s processing capability. Steinberg likewise treats driver availability as part of Windows DAW setup and latency considerations. See Image-Line’s audio settings guidance and Steinberg’s Windows audio performance guidance.

Buffer settings and real-time deadlines affect whether the computer can finish processing each audio block before playback needs it. A suitable driver and configuration may make low-latency work more practical, but the available evidence does not establish a universal CPU reduction from ASIO or a particular buffer size. Lower latency, lower CPU use and hardware DSP are related considerations, not interchangeable claims.

Choose hardware for the problem you actually have

Before buying a soundcard to address high CPU use, identify the overloaded work and confirm the hardware can process it. Compare these criteria separately:

Criterion What to verify
Processing location Does the device have a DSP or hardware audio engine, and does the specific effect or stream run there?
Software compatibility Do the exact DAW, plug-ins, driver and operating system support the device’s DSP path?
Drivers and latency Does the driver support the low-latency workflow you need? Treat this as separate from DSP capability.
Inputs, outputs and workflow Does the device provide the connections and monitoring features needed for recording or playback? These can be valuable without reducing CPU use.
Host and DSP limits Which tasks remain on the computer CPU, and what processing capacity does the device’s DSP provide?

For example, someone who needs compatible hardware-accelerated UAD plug-ins may have a reason to consider a UAD DSP interface. Someone seeking only more inputs, different connections or a low-latency driver should compare those features on their own merits rather than assume they will reduce plug-in CPU load.

Troubleshoot DAW glitches before replacing hardware

  1. Find the workload. Check which tracks and plug-ins coincide with the CPU spike. If they are native plug-ins, a soundcard without a supported DSP route will not relocate their calculations.
  2. Check the processing path. Confirm that the exact device, driver, operating system, DAW and plug-ins support hardware processing—and that the affected plug-ins are actually configured to use it.
  3. Review DAW resource settings and routing. PreSonus says Studio One’s dropout protection can distribute processing and reduce overall CPU load, with results still dependent on the computer, driver quality and audio I/O hardware. Its Windows audio guidance also recommends sharing an auxiliary effect across tracks when that avoids running repeated instances of the same plug-in. See Studio One performance guidance and PreSonus’s Windows audio setup guide.
  4. Match the driver and latency setup to the task. If the problem is monitoring delay or unreliable input and output, investigate driver support and audio configuration separately from DSP. Steinberg notes that onboard audio may lack the ASIO driver support its products need for low-latency operation.

What about gaming performance?

There is no basis here for promising that a dedicated soundcard will improve modern gaming frame rates. A 2007 Analog Devices discussion argued that motherboard audio CPU load had no noticeable frame-rate effect on computers of that period and cautioned that benchmarks could reward a solution without showing that it performed the advertised effects. That historical discussion is not a controlled, current measurement for modern PCs. See Analog Devices’ PC audio discussion.

No current controlled comparison or reliable universal CPU-saving percentage is established for onboard audio, non-DSP soundcards and DSP interfaces. A CPU meter can help identify a workload, but it does not by itself show whether latency, driver behavior or a device’s DSP is the source of a performance problem.
