Studies find that accuracy varies by device, metric, person, and night. A tracker can help you follow broad patterns over time, but its number for one night is not a definitive measurement or a diagnosis.
What does a sleep tracker measure?
Consumer wearables use signals such as movement and other sensor data to infer when you are asleep or awake. Their software then estimates total sleep time and, on some devices, metrics such as sleep efficiency, time to fall asleep, wake after sleep onset, and sleep stages. These are algorithmic estimates, not direct observations of sleep.

PSG, which records multiple physiological signals during a sleep study, is the reference method used in the cited validation studies. A tracker can agree with PSG on whether a person is asleep much of the time yet still misclassify wakefulness or produce a different total duration.
How close are trackers to polysomnography?
A 2025 meta-analysis pooled results from 24 studies involving 798 participants and a range of wrist-worn consumer trackers. The authors reported a mean total-sleep-time difference of −16.854 minutes compared with PSG (95% confidence interval −26.332 to −7.375 minutes). They also found significant pooled differences in sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and wake after sleep onset. Read the meta-analysis.

This pooled result describes the average across the included studies and devices. It is not a correction factor for a particular product, nor a promise that an individual tracker will over- or underestimate sleep by that amount on a given night. Device generation, algorithm, metric, and study population all matter.
Why high sleep-detection accuracy can still mislead
Sensitivity and specificity answer different questions. Sleep sensitivity measures how often a device identifies PSG-scored sleep as sleep. Wake specificity measures how often it correctly identifies PSG-scored wake as wake. A device can score highly on the first and poorly on the second, especially when a person lies still while awake.

- Worn on the upper arm, this lightweight and breathable smart sleep band is available in two sizes for comfort throughout the night. Physical size: Sleep Band S-M: 12.8" x 2.5" x 0.02" (326 x 63.5 x 0.55 mm)
- Can provide sleep-tracking metrics, including sleep score, sleep stages, HRV and duration of rest (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Up to 7 nights of battery life
- For more insight into your health, the breathing variations feature uses Pulse Ox to check your level of variations while sleeping (this is not a medical device and not intended for diagnosing or monitoring medical conditions; Pulse Ox is required and not available in all countries)
- Using skin temperature, advanced women’s health tracking provides more insight into your menstrual cycle, including better period predictions and past ovulation estimates (this feature is not intended to support conception, contraception or birth control and is not a medical device)
For example, a 2020 validation study of the Basis B1 included 18 adults and 40 analyzed nights. The authors reported 98.9% sleep sensitivity but only 8.1% wake specificity; the device significantly overestimated total sleep time and underestimated wake after sleep onset. That result illustrates a possible failure mode, not the performance of current trackers generally. See the Basis B1 study.

Results vary by device, metric, and study conditions
A one-night comparison published in 2024 tested the Oura Ring Gen3, Fitbit Sense 2, and Apple Watch Series 8 in 35 healthy adults aged 20–50. Each device had at least 95% sensitivity for distinguishing sleep from wake, while sensitivity for sleep stages ranged from 50% to 86%. Estimates differed by device and stage. The small, healthy-adult sample does not establish how those devices perform for other ages, health conditions, later models, or ordinary use over many nights. Read the three-device study.
Study conditions also affect interpretation. A 2021 laboratory study assessed seven consumer devices in 34 healthy young adults over three nights, including a disrupted-sleep condition. Its authors describe PSG as the most direct objective assessment and discuss proportional biases with possible implications for disrupted nights and insomnia. It does not establish accuracy for every person with insomnia or every real-world night. Read the laboratory study.

How to use your tracker’s sleep-duration number
- Look for patterns, not a verdict on one night. A consistent change in your own estimates may be worth noting, but the displayed duration is still an estimate.
- Compare like with like. When evaluating accuracy claims, check the exact device and version, the metric reported, whether PSG was the reference, who participated, and whether nights were disrupted.
- Use a simple sleep diary as context. Recording when you went to bed, when you got up, and how rested you felt can help you interpret wearable trends. A diary is a practical companion, not a proven way to make the tracker more accurate.
- Do not treat stage graphs as a clinical finding. Stage estimates are a separate metric from total sleep time and vary across devices.
Can a sleep tracker diagnose a sleep disorder?
No. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine says consumer sleep technology cannot currently be used to diagnose or treat sleep disorders. It says consumer-generated data may support a patient-clinician discussion when considered as part of an appropriate clinical evaluation. Read the AASM position statement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you have persistent sleep difficulties or concerning symptoms, discuss them with a qualified clinician rather than relying on a wearable’s score or estimate. Bring tracker data if it helps describe a pattern, but let the clinical evaluation—not the device readout—guide diagnosis and care.
