Usually, a robot vacuum-mop’s hot-water or steam feature treats its mop pads at the dock; that alone does not show that the robot sanitizes the floor. Pad washing, steam treatment, drying, and the robot’s floor-cleaning pass are separate steps. If you need to disinfect a floor, use a product labeled for that surface and follow its dilution and wet-contact directions—after checking that the robot and flooring instructions allow it.
Does hot-water mop washing disinfect the floor?
Not necessarily. In some models, hot water is used at the dock to wash dirty mop pads after or during a cleaning task. The robot may use a different process on the floor, and the water used to clean pads may never be applied to the floor at all.

That distinction matters when judging claims. A temperature measured in dock water, steam, or drying air describes what happens at the station, not the temperature or disinfecting performance of the floor pass. Likewise, a test showing fewer bacteria on a mop pad is not a test showing that a floor was sanitized.

Steam or hot-water treatment at the dock
Samsung’s UK product page for the Bespoke Jet Bot Combo describes a Clean Station Steam+ that washes mop pads with steam and water. The page reports a measured 50–60°C steam-and-water mixture, 100°C steam, and 50–60°C drying air. These figures describe dock operations, not a temperature applied to the floor. Samsung also reports up to 99.99% reduction of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa on mop pads, based on Intertek testing using the Wash the Mop course. That is a manufacturer-reported, pad-specific result; it is not evidence that the robot sanitizes floors.
Hot-water pad washing varies by model and mode
ECOVACS says that, for the relevant hot-water cleaning feature, pads are first moistened with cold water and then washed with hot water. The company also says the station does not dispense hot water for pad cleaning in energy-saving mode. This describes pad washing at the station, not a demonstration of floor disinfection. ECOVACS: The base station is not dispensing hot water when cleaning the mopping pads.

Sanitizing a floor is different from washing a mop pad
To determine whether a floor has been sanitized or disinfected, look for evidence covering the floor surface and the actual conditions of use—not just a dock feature or a pad test. When using a disinfectant, its label is the relevant guide to approved surfaces, dilution, and how long the surface must remain wet.
For example, the directions on EPA Reg. No. 5813-121’s 2022 label specify a five-minute contact period for certain hard, nonporous floors. That is an instruction for that product under its stated directions, not a universal contact time or a general recipe. U.S. EPA: CRB I label, EPA Reg. No. 5813-121.

Clean first, then disinfect if needed
The U.S. EPA’s educational guidance says to clean before disinfecting because dirt and organic matter can reduce the effectiveness of some disinfectants. A routine robot pass may help with ordinary floor cleaning, but do not assume it replaces the label-directed cleaning and disinfection process for a particular surface or need. U.S. EPA: Section 9, effective and safe cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting in ECE.

When reading a product page or comparing models, check what the feature actually does rather than treating “hot water,” “steam,” or “sanitizing” as interchangeable:

- Where heat is applied: Is it used to wash pads at the dock, treat them with steam, dry them, or during the robot’s floor pass?
- What the temperature refers to: Is the number for water, steam, or drying air?
- What was tested: Was the test performed on mop pads or on a floor surface? Are the organisms and test conditions disclosed?
- Who reports the result: Is the claim from the manufacturer, and does the page describe testing by an independent testing organization?
- What the manual allows: Does it permit hot water or cleaning chemicals in the tank or on the pad?
- What your floor permits: Are the floor material and any disinfectant directions compatible with the intended method?
Check the robot’s manual before adding water or chemicals
Instructions are model-specific. For example, iRobot says not to put hot water, detergent, or disinfectant in the Roomba 200/2000 Combo tank because it could damage the robot, and directs users to approved solutions. Its pad-care instructions call for cold-water hand washing and air drying. Do not infer that one brand’s dock can safely use heat or chemicals just because another model advertises those features. iRobot: How to Mop with your Roomba 200/2000 Combo Robot; iRobot: Roomba 200/2000: How to Clean or Replace the Mop Pad.
Before putting anything in a robot’s tank or applying it to a pad, check the manual for that exact model. Also check the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions and the disinfectant label; a product intended for a floor is not automatically approved for a robot tank.
