Sony and Nintendo describe downloading in their intended low-power modes as a supported function, and the reviewed support guidance does not say those downloads damage the console or its storage drive. The important distinction is between using the system’s sleep or rest controls and cutting power while the console is active.
What the official guidance says
“Rest mode” is PlayStation terminology; Nintendo calls its equivalent “sleep mode.” On PS5 and PS4, Sony documents rest mode as a console power state and supports downloads or updates when the required settings are enabled. Nintendo says Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED can download software in sleep mode when they have an internet connection and sufficient storage. These are supported features, not a promise that hardware can never fail.

Neither manufacturer’s cited guidance gives a damage rate, compares drive wear during low-power downloads, or says that overnight downloads shorten an SSD or HDD’s life. There is no basis here to claim that routine downloads in these modes cause drive damage.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
Use the console’s Power menu to select Enter Rest Mode. For downloads to continue, enable the internet connection feature for rest mode. Sony also describes automatic game and system software updates; which downloads occur depends on the console’s settings. Sony notes that enabling rest-mode features uses more power than the lowest-power state. That is a power-use trade-off, not evidence that downloads damage the console or drive.
Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED
Nintendo’s guidance says software can download in sleep mode when the console is connected to the internet and there is enough free space in system memory or on the inserted microSD card. If a download does not progress, Nintendo recommends checking for a system update, confirming the internet connection and signal, and freeing storage space. Nintendo separately says leaving a Switch docked or connected to AC power overnight, including after it is fully charged, will not harm the battery. That statement concerns battery charging; it is not a blanket guarantee about every component or operating condition. See Nintendo’s guidance on leaving the console docked.

What can cause trouble—and what to avoid
- Do not abruptly remove PlayStation power while the indicator is lit or blinking. Sony warns that disconnecting AC power in that state may cause data loss, corruption, or console damage. Let the system enter rest mode or shut down through its controls before disconnecting power.
- Check the prerequisites. A missing internet connection, disabled rest-mode networking, or insufficient storage can prevent downloads from proceeding. Those are setup or download problems, not proof of drive damage.
- Keep the console’s ventilation unobstructed. The reviewed support guidance does not establish that a download itself creates a special overheating risk; normal ventilation remains sensible during any period of operation.
- Use model-specific instructions. The evidence here covers PS5, PS4, Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. It does not establish the right settings or behavior for Xbox consoles.
Does this answer apply to Xbox or Switch 2?
Do not assume that Xbox power modes behave exactly like PlayStation rest mode or Nintendo sleep mode. Current Xbox-specific official guidance was not established in the sources used for this answer, so check the support page for the exact Xbox model and power setting before relying on background downloads.

Nintendo has a support page for downloads that do not progress in sleep mode on Switch 2, but the source material available here does not establish its detailed requirements. Check Nintendo’s model-specific instructions rather than assuming every Switch-family setting is identical: Nintendo Switch 2 sleep-mode download troubleshooting.
