Save transfers, cheat codes and multiplayer depend on the exact game, release, platform, region and update. A modern save-state feature is not proof that an original memory-card save will import, and a PlayStation Plus multiplayer policy is not proof that a legacy local mode survived.
Why there is no universal PS1-remaster answer
The label “remaster” hides several technically different products. A remake may rebuild the game and its save system from scratch. A remaster may preserve much of the original code while changing assets or menus. A port may run the original game in a new wrapper. A PS1 classic may be the original software executed through an emulator on a modern console. Those approaches do not share one file format or one feature policy.

Even two releases with the same title can differ. A digital classic, a physical rerelease, a regional edition and a later patch may expose different save menus, cheat handling or multiplayer options. Before making a definite claim, identify the game, the modern SKU, the console, the region and the installed version.

Sony’s May 23, 2022 PlayStation Plus guide says selected original PlayStation and PSP classics would offer an interface to save at any time and rewind gameplay. These are emulator-layer conveniences: they create snapshots or additional save points around the running game. The guide does not say that a memory-card file from original PS1 hardware can be imported into every classic release.

Sony also states that downloaded PlayStation Plus catalog games save data to the PS4 or PS5 console on which they are played. Its support documentation separately describes cloud storage for PS4 and PS5 save data through PlayStation Plus. Neither statement establishes compatibility with a file stored on an original PlayStation memory card. A console save, a cloud copy, an emulator save state and a game’s own save file are different things.
Can you use an original PS1 save on the remaster?
Only when the specific release explicitly supports it. Most modern products should be treated as starting a separate save until the publisher documents an import path. An original memory card contains data arranged for the original hardware and game build. A remake or a port may use an entirely different format, while an emulator may keep the original format inside a virtual memory card but still provide no supported way to copy a physical card.
Four save types that are easy to confuse

How to verify an import before starting
- Write down the exact title and edition, including whether it is a remake, remaster, port or PS1 classic.
- Confirm the target platform, region and current patch version. A feature listed for one platform or territory may not apply to another.
- Check the publisher’s product page, release notes and manual for terms such as “save import,” “memory-card transfer,” “cross-save” or “legacy save.”
- Look for an in-game import command or a documented console utility. A generic save-anywhere or rewind button is not an import command.
- Keep the original card untouched. If an import is supported, make a backup first and follow the release’s exact conversion procedure.
If no official import procedure is described, plan on beginning a new save. Hardware adapters or a memory card from the original system may let you continue on original hardware, but the available evidence does not establish them as a way to transfer data into a modern release.

Do PS1 classics on PS5 support the original cheat codes?
Sometimes, but there is no platform-wide guarantee. A button sequence can work only if the modern release still contains the same cheat routine, reads input in the same way and has not changed the relevant menus or timing. A remake can replace the code entirely; a port can remove a debug option; an emulated classic can preserve the original behavior yet alter how controllers report buttons.
Cheat behavior to distinguish
- Original button sequence: A code entered at a title screen, during play or in a password menu. Verify the exact prompt and timing.
- Unlock or bonus: A feature earned through normal play, a completion flag or a modern extras menu. This is not necessarily the old code.
- Built-in cheat menu: A modern accessibility or replay option that may replace button codes rather than preserve them.
- External device code: A code intended for original cheat hardware. It should not be assumed to function in a remake, port or emulator.
Check the current release’s manual, help screen and publisher notes. Test a code only after confirming where it is entered and whether enabling it disables trophies, achievements, leaderboards or saving; those consequences are release-specific and should not be inferred from the original game.
Does the remastered version still have local multiplayer?
That depends on the original mode and the modern release. “Multiplayer” can mean two players sharing one console, split-screen, a PlayStation Link or system-link mode, or an online service. A release may preserve one and omit another. A single-player remake may remove multiplayer even when the original had it, while a port may retain local play but add no online support.

Identify the original mode
- Same-console local play: Players use controllers on one system, sometimes with a multitap or another controller accessory.
- Split-screen: The display is divided between players; performance and screen layout can change in a remake.
- Link or system-link play: Two consoles communicate directly. Modern hardware may not expose the required link function.
- Online multiplayer: A network service connects players remotely. This is a new technical implementation, not an automatic continuation of a PS1 link mode.
Sony’s current PlayStation Plus support information says most PS4 and PS5 games require a PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer. That general statement does not promise online play for a particular PS1 classic, and it says nothing about whether a local mode from the original hardware remains available. Confirm the player count, required controllers, supported mode and region for the exact release.
A title-by-title verification workflow
- Capture the release identity. Record the game name, edition or SKU, platform, region and update number shown by the console.
- Classify the technology. Mark it as remake, remaster, port or emulated classic. Do not use those labels interchangeably.
- Check save language. Search official documentation for import, transfer, conversion, cross-save or memory-card terms. Treat save states as a separate feature.
- Check cheat documentation. Compare the original code’s entry screen and button labels with the modern manual or in-game help. Look for explicit removals or replacements.
- Check multiplayer specifications. Note local or online mode, player count, controller requirements, network requirement and whether the feature is limited to a particular platform or region.
- Test without risking progress. Use a new profile or backup slot. Confirm that importing, enabling a code or joining multiplayer does not overwrite the only copy of your save.
- Record the result. Keep the version number and the documentation you used; a later update can change menus or compatibility.
Common scenarios and what they imply
A PS1 classic with save-anywhere and rewind
You can expect emulator conveniences documented for that title, such as an on-demand snapshot or rewind control. You cannot infer physical memory-card import, original cheat-code support or multiplayer retention from those controls alone.
A visual remaster with a new menu and trophies
Assume a separate modern save unless an import tool is listed. Trophy tracking and a redesigned menu indicate that the release has platform-specific systems; they do not demonstrate that the old card format or every cheat survived.

A remake advertised as a new game
Expect the greatest divergence from the PS1 version. Save structure, unlocks, codes, controller prompts and multiplayer may all be redesigned. Compare the feature list directly with the original mode you care about rather than relying on the shared title.
A port that looks nearly identical
Visual similarity is not proof of file compatibility. The port may emulate the original save format, translate it to a console save, or omit transfer entirely. Verify the process before deleting or replacing an original card.

Troubleshooting when a feature is missing
The import option is absent
Recheck that you installed the intended edition and region, then read the release notes for the current patch. If the documentation lists only save states or console saves, those are not substitutes for a memory-card import. Continue on original hardware or start a new modern save rather than using an unverified conversion.
The old cheat code does nothing
Try the exact screen and timing described for the modern release, verify controller button mapping and check whether the code was replaced by an extras menu. If the publisher does not document the code, treat it as unsupported instead of repeatedly entering it during active play.
Multiplayer is unavailable
Determine whether the original feature was local, link-based or online. Confirm the number of supported controllers and whether the modern release requires a subscription or an online service. A missing network option does not necessarily mean local play is removed, and a local option does not recreate an old link mode.
Quick decision checklist
- Have you named the exact modern release, platform, region and version?
- Is it a remake, remaster, port or emulated PS1 classic?
- Does official documentation explicitly mention original-save import?
- Are you distinguishing a native save, emulator save state and PS4/PS5 cloud save?
- Does the cheat documentation match the modern controller layout and entry screen?
- Have you identified the original multiplayer mode and its player count?
- Are you relying on a title-specific statement rather than a generic PlayStation Plus policy?
Bottom line
PS1 remasters do not follow one preservation standard. Sony’s documented save-anywhere, rewind and console-storage features describe selected modern classic releases, not universal memory-card transfer. Original cheat codes and multiplayer are likewise title-specific. The reliable answer comes only from checking the exact game, release identity, platform, region and version against its official documentation.
