Yes, paper-feel iPad protectors can make the display look a little softer and slightly dimmer, because their matte texture diffuses light. Touch sensitivity is a different question: the available evidence does not show that a single, properly installed protector universally makes finger touch or Apple Pencil input less responsive. The biggest practical warning is not to stack one over another screen protector.
What changes when you apply a paper-feel protector?
The textured, matte surface is meant to cut glare and add friction for writing or drawing with Apple Pencil. That same texture scatters light, so fine details may look less crisp and bright backgrounds can show softness or color refraction. How noticeable this is depends on the product and viewing conditions; there is no established numeric clarity or brightness loss that applies to all paper-feel protectors.

Manufacturers acknowledge the trade-off. ESR says its matte magnetic protector reduces glare and smudges, but screen clarity will not be the same as with no protector. Belkin says its Paper Film may make the screen appear slightly softer than a bare display or clear protector. Paperlike says textured surfaces reduce brightness slightly and claims its Nanodots design creates less distortion than conventional matte films; that comparison is Paperlike’s own product claim, not an independent comparative test.

Does it reduce touch sensitivity or Apple Pencil responsiveness?
Do not assume that a softer-looking image means the touchscreen is less responsive. ESR says the slight edge gap on its removable magnetic protector is normal and does not affect touch sensitivity or writing. In one Best Buy Blog review, Brad Moon reported that Paperlike on an iPad mini 6 with Apple Pencil 2 remained as responsive as before, although swiping felt different. That is one person’s experience with one setup, not a controlled test or guarantee for other models and products.
Paper-feel texture changes the writing experience by increasing friction. That is a change in Pencil feel, not proof of delayed input. The sources available do not establish a universal decline in finger-touch response or Pencil responsiveness across protectors.

There is a specific exception worth avoiding: Paperlike warns that putting its film on top of an existing screen protector may reduce responsiveness when touching the display or using Apple Pencil. For example, Paperlike lists its Paperlike 3 as less than 0.095 mm thick, while Belkin lists its SCREENFORCE Paper Film as 0.15 mm thick. Those are manufacturer specifications, not measures of clarity or touch performance, and thickness alone cannot tell you which film will look sharper or respond better.

What to do if the screen looks unclear or input feels different
- If the display looks softer: matte light diffusion is a likely explanation. Compare the same content on a bright, plain background and in the same lighting, keeping in mind that the effect varies by product.
- If touch or Pencil input seems less responsive: check whether another screen protector is underneath. Paperlike specifically warns that layering its film over another protector may reduce responsiveness.
- If writing feels different but input registers: that may be the added friction of the textured surface rather than reduced responsiveness.
- If the fit or edge feels unusual: consult the product’s guidance for your exact model. ESR says the slight edge gap from its magnetic strips is normal for its product and does not affect touch or writing.

Manufacturer FAQs describe expected trade-offs for their own products, and a single hands-on review offers a useful but limited account of one iPad mini 6 setup.
