Gasoline, Diesel, Jet Fuel, and Heating Oil: What’s the Difference?

These fuels are all made from petroleum, but they are formulated for different jobs: gasoline for spark-ignition engines, diesel for compression-ignition engines, kerosene-type jet fuel for turbine aircraft, and heating oil for furnaces and boilers. Their shared origin does not make them interchangeable; the grade and specification required by the equipment matter.

How the four fuels differ

Fuel Typical use How it is used U.S. specification or distinction
Gasoline Cars and other equipment with spark-ignition engines A spark ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine. Finished motor gasoline is a blend. Octane measures resistance to engine knock, not energy content.
Diesel Diesel trucks, buses, tractors, trains, boats, and equipment Fuel is injected into hot, compressed air and ignites; diesel engines do not use spark plugs to ignite the fuel. EIA defines No. 2 diesel under ASTM D975.
Kerosene-type jet fuel Turbojet and turboprop aircraft Burned in turbine engines; aviation fuel must meet requirements suited to aircraft operation, including at altitude. EIA describes kerosene-type jet fuel with reference to ASTM D1655. It is not the same as aviation gasoline or ordinary kerosene.
Heating oil Furnaces and boilers, including domestic heating and some commercial or industrial burners Typically delivered to an atomizing burner for combustion and heat. No. 2 heating oil is defined under ASTM D396. “Heating oil” can refer to different grades.

These descriptions use U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) product terms. EIA’s overview of how oil products are used and its product definitions distinguish the fuels by their applications and specifications.

Why related petroleum products behave differently

A refinery separates crude oil into fractions and then processes and blends those materials into finished products. Gasoline is a lighter, more volatile product; kerosene and distillate products such as diesel and heating oil are generally in the middle ranges. The exact product depends on the crude oil and the refinery processes used.

Boiling ranges can overlap. A U.S. Department of Energy technical review notes overlap among gasoline, jet, and diesel boiling ranges, but that does not mean their finished specifications are the same. Refining is more than separating fractions: products are further processed and blended for their intended uses. See the EIA’s refining explainer and the DOE’s technical review of sustainable aviation fuel.

Gasoline: volatility and knock resistance

Gasoline is a complex, relatively volatile blend designed for spark-ignition engines. Its octane rating describes resistance to knock, an undesirable form of premature or uncontrolled combustion. A higher octane number is not, by itself, a statement that the fuel contains more energy.

Diesel: ignition by compression

Diesel fuel is a distillate used in compression-ignition engines. Instead of relying on a spark plug, the engine compresses air until it is hot, then injects fuel into that air. EIA describes diesel as having a higher boiling point and specific gravity than gasoline.

Jet fuel is not avgas

Commercial turbine aircraft use kerosene-type jet fuel; piston-engine aircraft use aviation gasoline, or avgas. The FAA explains that “Jet aircraft and turbine-powered, propeller aircraft do not use avgas, but instead use fuels very similar to kerosene, which does not contain a lead additive.” Its discussion of leaded aviation fuel and the environment also addresses avgas and octane. Aviation turbine fuel is made to aviation requirements, so ordinary kerosene should not be treated as a substitute.

Heating oil: identify the grade

Heating oil is a broad term, not a single universal formulation. In EIA’s U.S. definitions, No. 2 heating oil is a distillate used in domestic heating and some commercial or industrial burner units. The grade and equipment specification are important when selecting fuel.

Are diesel and heating oil interchangeable?

They are related, but a blanket claim that diesel and heating oil can be swapped is not justified. EIA classifies No. 2 distillate as material that can be used as either diesel fuel or fuel oil, while separately defining No. 2 diesel under ASTM D975 and No. 2 heating oil under ASTM D396 for different applications. A shared product family does not establish that a particular fuel meets the requirements of a particular engine, furnace, or boiler.

Use the fuel grade specified by the equipment manufacturer and follow applicable rules. The same caution applies to gasoline, aviation fuels, and other products: a similar name or petroleum origin is not proof of compatibility.

How much energy is in a barrel?

EIA’s heat-content table, accessed in 2026, reports the following energy content per barrel. These are fuel heat-content figures, not measurements of how efficiently a vehicle or heating appliance turns fuel into useful work.

Product EIA heat content per barrel
Finished motor gasoline 5.049 MMBtu
Diesel and home heating fuel (distillate fuel oil) 5.770 MMBtu
Jet fuel 5.670 MMBtu

Source: EIA’s emissions methodology and heat-content table. The values alone cannot establish which fuel costs less to use, gives better vehicle mileage, or produces more useful heat in a specific appliance; those comparisons depend on fuel grade, equipment, operating conditions, and the method used.

What comes from a barrel of crude oil?

Refinery yields are averages, not fixed recipes. In 2023, U.S. refineries produced an average of 19.57 gallons of finished motor gasoline, 12.47 gallons of distillate fuel oil, and 4.41 gallons of kerosene-type jet fuel per 42-gallon barrel of crude oil input. EIA last updated these figures on June 20, 2024, and identified the source data as preliminary.

The total volume of refinery output can exceed the crude oil input volume because processing creates a volume gain. The proportions vary with crude oil and refinery processing; the figures are not a prediction of what any individual barrel will yield. EIA explains this in its refining overview.

Choosing the right fuel

  • Check the equipment maker’s specified fuel and grade, rather than choosing based on a fuel’s broad family or apparent similarity.
  • For aircraft, distinguish turbine fuel from avgas and follow the applicable aviation requirements.
  • For heating equipment, verify the heating-oil grade required by the burner or boiler.
  • Keep regional terminology in mind: these definitions and specifications describe U.S. usage, and fuel names, grades, blend rules, and standards can differ elsewhere.
