There is no verified evidence that one in five CISOs take time off specifically to avoid Patch Tuesday. The claim’s original source, survey, date, sample and geography are not established. Separate surveys do document workload and time-off pressures among CISOs, but they do not connect those pressures to Microsoft’s monthly patch release.
What Patch Tuesday is—and why it creates work
Patch Tuesday usually means the second Tuesday of each month, when Microsoft and Adobe regularly release batches of security patches, according to the Center for Internet Security (CIS). It is not a universal software-update schedule: other vendors may issue patches on different days, quarterly or as needed, as CIS explains in its patch-management guidance.

Security patches address known vulnerabilities. Once a patch is publicly announced, information about the vulnerabilities it fixes is generally available to potential attackers. That can increase the likelihood that attackers will target systems that remain unpatched, which is why organizations need processes for assessing and applying updates.
The monthly release date is only one part of the work. Organizations must know which hardware and software they operate, determine which updates apply, and manage the work across their environment. CIS recommends starting a patch-management program by understanding the organization’s hardware and software assets. The required effort therefore depends on an organization’s environment and processes, not just the calendar.

What CISO time-off surveys actually report
Published surveys support a broader picture of demanding workloads, but none of the figures below says respondents took leave to avoid Patch Tuesday.
| Finding | Survey and reporting details | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| 25% had taken no time off in the preceding 12 months | A 2021 Tessian/Censuswide survey of 300 CISOs in the United Kingdom and United States, reported by Infosecurity Magazine. | Reports general time off, not a decision tied to Patch Tuesday. |
| 40% had missed a family vacation because of work | The same 2021 Tessian/Censuswide survey of 300 CISOs in the United Kingdom and United States, reported by Infosecurity Magazine. | Connects work with missed vacations, but does not identify patch releases as the reason. |
| 43% said they could not take time off without creating substantial stress upon return | A Seemplicity survey of 300 U.S. CISOs and equivalents, reported by Infosecurity Magazine on March 3, 2026. | Describes concern about returning to work after leave, not time off taken to avoid a patch cycle. |
These percentages cannot be used to validate the “one in five” headline. They concern different questions and, in the 2021 and 2026 reports, different survey populations and dates. None establishes how many CISOs take time off because of Patch Tuesday.

How to interpret the “fifth of CISOs” claim
The claim remains unsupported: its original publisher and the survey details needed to assess it have not been established. It should not be treated as a measured fact or as evidence that CISOs routinely schedule leave around patch releases.

A comment by Tyler Reguly, Fortra’s associate director of security R&D, offers a different perspective. In a May 19, 2025 article reproducing CSO coverage, he said: “For those at the top of the food chain – CISOs and CSOs – this is a great Patch Tuesday to test your teams to see how well they know your environment.” The point is that a patch cycle can reveal how well a team understands its environment; the comment is not a survey finding about executives taking leave.
