Do NVIDIA Game Filters Lower FPS in Warzone? What to Know

NVIDIA Freestyle filters may affect Warzone FPS, but there is no universal penalty. A repeated on/off test on your PC is the best way to measure the tradeoff.

Yes, NVIDIA Freestyle Game Filters can affect Warzone FPS, but there is no reliable current benchmark establishing a typical loss. The impact depends on your setup and the filters you apply, so the most useful answer is a repeatable comparison on your own PC—not a number from another player.

What Game Filters do—and what NVIDIA says about performance

NVIDIA describes Freestyle as post-processing applied to supported games while you play. It can change the image with color and saturation adjustments or more dramatic effects such as HDR. Those controls change how the game looks; NVIDIA’s support documentation does not give a Warzone-specific FPS measurement or a cost for individual filters. NVIDIA Support’s Freestyle overview was updated on April 21, 2022.

NVIDIA’s Warzone performance guide notes that achieved frame rates vary with PC components and in-game conditions, and that graphics settings can trade image quality for performance. That is general guidance, not a test of Freestyle filters. NVIDIA’s product information and release notes describe Game Filter controls in the NVIDIA App but do not quantify their FPS impact; controls and supported-game information may change with app versions.

Why reports of FPS loss disagree

Player reports are inconsistent and uncontrolled. In a 2022 Warzone discussion, one player reported a drop from 180 FPS without filters to 120 with them, while replies described little or no loss from color and contrast adjustments. A 2020 discussion also asked for settings that would reduce FPS impact. These posts reflect individual experiences with older game versions, not current, comparable benchmarks.

A result from one PC cannot establish what another player should expect. Hardware limits, resolution, the chosen filter stack, the game scene, and software versions can all complicate an on/off comparison. The available sources do not isolate those variables or show that any particular filter is always harmless or always expensive.

How to test the impact on your own PC

Compare filter-off and filter-on performance while keeping other conditions as steady as possible. NVIDIA materials describe an overlay that can report FPS and 1% lows; the repeatable procedure below is practical advice, not a published NVIDIA test protocol.

  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
  1. Choose a repeatable location or route in Warzone. Keep the game mode, resolution, graphics settings, driver and NVIDIA App versions, and background workload unchanged.
  2. Turn Game Filters off, run the same route, and record average FPS and 1% lows. Repeat the run rather than relying on one result.
  3. Enable the exact filters you want to use. Repeat the same route under the same conditions and record the same metrics.
  4. Compare like with like across multiple runs. If the difference is small relative to the variation between runs, collect more results before attributing it to the filters.

Judge the tradeoff as well as the frame-rate change: decide whether the visual adjustment or visibility improvement matters enough to you to keep it. If it does not, turn the filters off and compare again; there is no need to change unrelated graphics settings to answer this specific question.

What to conclude from the comparison

If repeated runs show a consistent drop with your chosen filters, that is evidence of an impact on your setup under those conditions—not a universal Warzone penalty. If the difference is indistinguishable from run-to-run variation, the test has not established a measurable effect for that setup. Either result is more useful for your decision than treating an older anecdote as a current FPS estimate.
