Adding fingerprints to your phone can make it easier to unlock from different hand positions, but there is no evidence here that enrolling several fingers makes a consumer smartphone harder to break into. Multiple fingerprints are still the same biometric method—not multiple authentication factors. Your passcode, the phone’s sensor and software, and how the device handles fallback and attack detection matter more to security.
Does adding more fingerprints make my phone more secure?
Not on the evidence available. No authoritative source cited here tests whether enabling multiple stored fingerprints on a current consumer smartphone reduces unauthorized unlocking. A phone may let you enroll more fingers so access works from either hand or when one finger is unavailable, but that is a convenience benefit, not a demonstrated security improvement. Follow your phone maker’s current instructions for enrollment and limits.

Several enrolled fingers do not create several factors. They remain biometric checks against the same device, whereas a passcode is a different kind of credential. NIST’s current Digital Identity Guidelines say, within their scope, that biometrics are to be used with a physical authenticator and that an alternative non-biometric option must be provided. Those requirements are for systems covered by the guidance; they are not a claim that every consumer phone implements the same rules.
What NIST’s multiple-finger results actually show
NIST’s 2019 study examined contactless fingerprint identification—not people unlocking current smartphones. It compared contactless images with contact fingerprint records using data from 200 federal employees and six contactless technologies: four smartphone-based apps and two standalone devices. Two contact devices were included for comparison. NIST summarized the findings in 2020:

| Result reported by NIST | What it applies to |
|---|---|
| 60%–70% accuracy for a single-finger contactless scan | The tested contactless devices and matching task in that study |
| One mobile app reached 95% accuracy with multiple-finger combinations | That app and the study’s contactless matching task |
| Other contactless devices approached 90% with multiple-finger combinations | The other tested devices in the same study |
| Contact devices generally exceeded 99.5% match accuracy | The study’s contact-device comparison |
These figures are not a rating of consumer phone unlock accuracy, and they do not establish that storing extra prints improves phone security. The study’s devices reflect the state of the art at data collection in May 2019. NIST’s summary of the study is available at NIST’s 2020 report summary; the technical report is NISTIR 8307.
Why fingerprint unlocking has limits
A match is a probability, not proof of identity
Fingerprint readings vary from one attempt to another. As NIST explains in SP 800-63B Revision 4, biometric systems can produce false matches as well as false non-matches. A false match may accept a non-matching sample; a false non-match may reject the enrolled user. Fingerprints also are not secret: latent prints can be left on objects a person touches.

- Instant Fingerprint Capture: Register and match prints in under 1 second using a high-resolution 500 DPI optical scanner, delivering speedy and precise verification.
- Flexible Connectivity Options: Features both USB and UART ports for straightforward connections to PCs, microcontrollers, and embedded hardware.
- Slim and Portable Build: With a compact 11×8×3 cm size and lightweight 20g frame, this module easily fits into smart locks, attendance systems, and custom security projects.
- Consistent Performance on Dry or Moist Fingers: Enhanced optical technology adapts to varying skin conditions, reducing false rejections for reliable everyday use.
- Energy-Efficient Operation: Runs on 3.3V DC with under 60mA current draw, ensuring low power consumption without sacrificing durability or speed.
For systems within its guidance, NIST sets a false match rate (FMR) requirement of one in 10,000 or better and recommends a false non-match rate (FNMR) below 5% under specified evaluation conditions. These are guidance thresholds, not universal ratings for every phone reader, and they should not be treated as measured performance for your device.

A fingerprint reader’s security depends on more than how many fingers are stored. The sensor, matching threshold, presentation-attack detection (PAD), software, and protection of biometric templates all matter. NIST recommends PAD for fingerprint systems and provides testing and performance guidance. Extra enrollment does not compensate for a weak implementation or an attack the system fails to detect.

- Storage Capacity: 240 fingerprints
- This module can be controlled through the serial port, or using the computer's serial port
- The product consists of optical fingerprint sensor, high-speed DSP processor, high-performance fingerprint matching algorithm, ultra-large capacity FLASH chip and other hardware and software
- This fingerprint module has stable performance, complete functions, and has multiple functions such as fingerprint collection, fingerprint registration, fingerprint matching, and fingerprint search
A historical example illustrates why device-specific updates matter. A June 2021 NIST draft report recounts that certain screen protectors on the Galaxy S10 caused its ultrasonic reader to detect protector patterns during fingerprint enrollment; reports followed that non-enrolled fingers could be accepted. Samsung patched the issue and advised users to delete and re-enroll prints. This account concerns a particular model and past issue, not current phones generally. See NISTIR 8334 draft.
When enrolling another finger can help
An extra enrolled finger can be useful if you often hold the phone in different hands or positions, or if one finger is temporarily unavailable. It may also provide another way to make a legitimate biometric attempt. That does not make the phone’s authentication stronger by itself, and all enrolled prints should belong to people you trust with access to the unlocked device.

Capture can fail under ordinary conditions. NIST notes that moisture affects fingerprint capture, and dirty, very dry, wet, or injured fingers may make recognition unreliable. Users also need to remember which fingers were enrolled. Keep the phone’s passcode usable as a fallback rather than relying on a biometric that may not work in every situation.

How to judge your phone’s unlock security
There is no supported head-to-head ranking here of current phone models or of fingerprint, face, and iris unlock. When assessing a particular device, check these factors in the maker’s current security documentation:
Best Value
- Home Button Fingerprint Reader Sensor Power Flex Replacement for Motorola Moto G Stylus 6.4" (XT2043-4,XT2043)
- Replacement for Motorola Moto G Stylus XT2043-4 XT2043 / Moto G Power XT2041-6 XT2041-7 XT2041-4 (Blue).
- Easy for you replace your faulty, cracked or broken one ,seller remind that you should replace this in the off state.
- Please carefully verify that the model and part number are completely consistent before purchasing. If the models are different, they are not compatible
- Can not find the model or you need but did not find the goods, you can contact customer service for you to find ! We have a wide range of laptop accessories to choose from!
- False acceptance and presentation-attack resistance: Does the manufacturer explain how the system handles non-matching samples and presentation attacks?
- Reliability: What happens when a finger is wet, dry, dirty, or injured, and what fallback remains available?
- User intent: Does the unlock method require an action that demonstrates you intend to unlock the phone?
- Fallback security: Can you use a passcode or another recovery method, and can you keep it private and protected?
- Biometric privacy: How does the device store and protect fingerprint templates?
- Maintenance: Are the phone’s operating system and security updates current, and does the maker have accessory-specific guidance for its sensor?
Keep your passcode private and avoid reusing it elsewhere. Review the manufacturer’s security instructions when enrolling prints, adding accessories, or installing updates. Fingerprints can make everyday access convenient, but they should not replace a protected passcode or the device maker’s security guidance.
