Yes—one broad 2025 developer survey cited in recent reporting put Windows ahead of macOS and Linux in reported use among professional developers. But it did not ask developers to choose one operating system, and separate polls of a tech-focused audience produced a very different result. Microsoft Distinguished Engineer David Fowler’s claim is plausible as a statement about use, not proof that Windows is every developer’s preferred system.
What did the Microsoft engineer say?
Windows Latest reported on October 5, 2026, that David Fowler, identified as a Microsoft Distinguished Engineer, responded to an X post reading “life is too short to support windows users.” Fowler wrote: “This is click bait but more developers use windows than any other operating system.” The quotation and the original post are reproduced in Windows Latest’s report; the article does not establish that Fowler was speaking for Microsoft or citing an official company survey. What do the reported developer-use figures show?
Windows Latest cited the Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey for these figures among professional developers. They describe reported use, not exclusive or primary operating-system choice:

|---|---|
| Windows | 49.5% |
| macOS | 32.9% |
| Ubuntu | 27.7% |
| WSL | 16.8% |
| Linux outside WSL | 16.7% |
These figures are reported by Windows Latest’s account of the 2025 survey. Respondents could select more than one option, and WSL was listed separately. The percentages therefore overlap and must not be added as if they were portions of a single, mutually exclusive total. They support the narrower point that Windows was the most commonly reported option in that survey; they do not show that 49.5% use Windows as their only or main development system.

Why do some polls show macOS and Linux ahead?
Gergely Orosz of The Pragmatic Engineer ran polls of his own audiences in 2026 asking which operating system respondents use to build software. Windows Latest reported the following results:
| Poll and audience | macOS | Linux | Windows |
|---|---|---|---|
| X poll, about 4,000 responses | 61.6% | 24.2% | 12.8% |
| LinkedIn poll, about 6,000 votes | 66% | 20% | 12% |
The figures and audience-size descriptions come from Windows Latest’s September 22, 2026 report. Orosz characterized his audience as more oriented toward startups and Big Tech than the industry overall. These are audience polls, not a representative global estimate, and their question about systems used to build software is not the same as the Stack Overflow survey’s reported-use measure.

- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Why the results are not contradictory
- Different people answered. A broad developer survey and polls among one publication’s social-media audiences can capture different professional communities.
- Different questions measure different things. “Use,” “primary operating system,” “preference,” and “use to build software” are not interchangeable.
- People can use more than one system. A developer might use Windows at work, Linux through WSL, and a Mac for another project. A multi-select survey records that differently from a poll asking for one answer.
- WSL complicates a simple Windows-versus-Linux split. Windows Subsystem for Linux runs Linux environments and tools on Windows. Someone using it may reasonably describe their setup as Windows-based, Linux-based for development tasks, or both, depending on the question.
So the Stack Overflow figures do not prove that developers prefer Windows, while the audience polls do not disprove Fowler’s narrower claim about reported use. The studies measure different populations and behaviors.
Which operating system suits which development work?
Windows
Windows is a natural fit for building Windows software and can suit developers working with .NET, C#, Visual Studio, games, or enterprise systems. WSL can add a Linux environment and command-line tools without making Linux a separate, mutually exclusive choice. These are use cases, not a rule that every developer in those fields must use Windows. Windows Latest

macOS
Some developers, especially in startup and larger technology-company circles represented in Orosz’s polls, favor Macs. Unix-like tooling is one commonly reported attraction. The poll results show the preference within those audiences, not across all developers.
Linux
Linux offers a Unix-like environment directly, which can appeal to developers whose work relies on command-line tools or Unix-oriented workflows. ITPro’s interviews with more than a dozen programmers, engineers, and developers surfaced varied opinions, including concerns about command-line and POSIX compatibility, consistency, and managed corporate machines. Those interviews are qualitative evidence, not a measure of how many developers choose Linux. ITPro

What the claim does—and does not—settle
Fowler’s response is consistent with the 2025 Stack Overflow figures as reported: Windows was the most commonly reported option among professional developers in that survey. It does not settle which system developers prefer, which one they use as their primary machine, or which environment is best for a particular job. The poll results and interview comments point to real variation in developer communities and workflows; none of these sources is a universal census of operating-system preference.
