Yes. Matte screen protectors can scratch, lift, become cloudy, or lose the surface quality that helps reduce glare. There is no established universal lifespan or calendar-based replacement interval: replace yours when its condition interferes with viewing, touch, sensor use, or the protection you need.
How to tell when a matte screen protector needs replacing
Inspect it in ordinary lighting and use. First check whether a mark is on the protector rather than the display. A faint scratch that is only visible at certain angles may be cosmetic; one that distracts while viewing or interferes with a fingerprint reader is a more practical reason to replace the film.

- Cracks, deep scratches, or lifting edges: Replace the film if damage is distracting, creates an edge that catches, or compromises the protection you expect.
- Cloudiness, discoloration, or uneven coating: These can degrade the view or make anti-glare performance inconsistent.
- Persistent smearing or a sticky-feeling surface: These are practical clues that the surface coating may have worn, not standardized diagnostic tests.
- Touch or fingerprint trouble: If the problem began after fitting a film, check the film’s compatibility and condition before assuming the device has failed.
Samsung notes that some third-party protective films may affect display quality, touch performance, and other device functions. Its guidance also identifies issues such as damaged film, uneven coating, discoloration, and problems attaching or removing some films.

How long do matte screen protectors last?
No universal “replace after X months” interval is established for matte screen protectors. Actual wear depends on the particular film, device, handling, and cleaning, and the available sources do not quantify those factors together. A model-specific accessory specification or an editorial list of wear signs should not be treated as a lifespan test.

Matte protectors are physical films with a surface designed to diffuse light. For example, Getac describes a PET matte screen film with an anti-glare coating for its UX10 tablet. That product information describes one accessory, not how long matte films generally last.
What to check before buying a replacement
Choose a protector made for the exact device model. Screen dimensions, display generation, case clearance, touch response, and fingerprint-sensor compatibility can differ, so a film that looks similar may still be a poor fit. Samsung recommends compatible or Samsung-certified accessories for Galaxy devices.

Compare replacement options by exact model fit, matte or anti-glare performance, sensor and touch compatibility, case clearance, material, installation and removal method, and any manufacturer certification relevant to your device. Getac’s UX10 listing illustrates the kind of model-specific detail to look for: its matte film is cut for that tablet and lists PET as its material. It is not a fit recommendation for other devices.

If touch or fingerprint problems start after installation
- Check that the film is intended for your exact device model and is installed as directed.
- If the issue appeared after fitting a new film, remove or replace that film if appropriate for its installation method, then test the device again.
- If problems persist after removing the accessory, follow device-specific troubleshooting or contact the device manufacturer.
