Do Laptop Cooling Pads Work? What They Help—and What They Don’t

Laptop cooling pads can help under sustained loads, especially when airflow lines up with underside vents. Test fit, noise and performance before buying.

Yes, a laptop cooling pad can make a measurable difference, but only when its airflow suits the laptop. A raised stand or basic fan mat may offer little improvement over simply lifting the computer, while a well-fitted, sealed cooler can lower temperatures on some gaming laptops. The trade-offs are noise, bulk and compatibility: the laptop needs underside air intakes positioned where the cooler can help.

What laptop cooler tests actually show

Results vary substantially with the laptop, cooler and workload. Published tests demonstrate that cooling pads can help in particular setups, but they do not establish a typical temperature drop for all laptops.

A fan pad lowered temperatures in one gaming-laptop test

In a 2020 test, Notebookcheck ran a Havit HV-F2056 pad with an MSI GP65 under a sustained Witcher 3 load. Average CPU temperature fell from 92°C to 80°C, average GPU temperature from 76°C to 70°C, and the measured surface hot spot from 44°C to 40°C. Combined noise rose from 53.9 dB(A) to 59.2 dB(A). These figures describe that test setup, not an expected result for another laptop.

A conventional mat may perform much like a stand

WIRED’s 2025 comparison used a Razer Blade 16 and Time Spy. Without a pad, it recorded a score of 17,942 and a maximum CPU temperature of 85°C. With a Targus mat, the score was 18,013 and the maximum CPU temperature remained 85°C. The review described the result as roughly similar to using the Razer pad with its fan switched off, and noted that a stand can provide similar airflow benefits. WIRED’s Razer cooling-pad test is specific to its tested laptop and conditions.

A sealed, vent-aligned cooler can do more on a compatible laptop

In that same WIRED test, the Razer pad scored 19,058 with a maximum CPU temperature of 77°C when its fan was on, and 19,542 at 75°C with Hyperboost. The results suggest that a pressure-directed design can outperform a basic mat when it fits the laptop. WIRED described Hyperboost compatibility as limited to the 2023, 2024 and 2025 Blade 16 generations; that detail applies to the models covered by the 2025 review, not other laptops.

Lower temperatures do not guarantee a major performance boost

Laptop Mag’s 2023 testing across three laptops found average processing improvements below 2% in its pad comparisons. In GPU-intensive games, most tested pads added less than one frame per second, although results differed in lighter tests. A cooler may reduce heat without changing performance enough to notice in ordinary use. Laptop Mag’s comparison reports results from its tested machines, not a universal forecast.

When a cooling pad is likely to help

A pad is most worth considering when the laptop draws air through vents on its underside and becomes hot or slows down during sustained demanding work, such as gaming, video rendering or other CPU- and GPU-heavy tasks. RTINGS discusses fan noise under those kinds of loads in its explanation of laptop fan noise. Before choosing a cooler, check the laptop’s intake locations and compare them with the pad’s fan positions or airflow chamber.

Fit matters as much as advertised fan count. The laptop must sit securely, and a sealed design needs a close match between the cooler’s seal and the computer’s size and underside vents. TechRadar reported sharply different repeat results in its Klim Mistral test and identified laptop dimensions and downward ventilation as fit requirements. A fan in the wrong place, or a gap that breaks the seal, can undermine the intended airflow.

Choose among a stand, fan mat and sealed cooler

Option What it does Best fit Main trade-off
Passive stand Raises the laptop and leaves more space around its underside for airflow. A laptop that benefits from elevation, or someone who wants a simpler desk setup. Does not actively push air into the laptop.
Open fan mat Raises the laptop and blows air around its underside. A laptop with bottom intakes near the mat’s airflow, especially if it also needs a stand. Cooling may be modest; the fan adds noise and needs power.
Sealed, pressure-directed cooler Uses a chamber or seal to direct airflow toward the laptop’s underside. A compatible laptop with downward-facing intakes and a close size match. Fit is critical; these designs can be louder, bulkier and less broadly compatible.

Do not choose on fan count or advertised airflow alone. Compare the fit, total noise, portability, ergonomics and power needs. A basic mat may still be useful for raising the computer or keeping it off a soft surface even if its active cooling effect is small.

How to test whether a cooler helps your laptop

A useful comparison checks temperatures and sustained performance under the same conditions, rather than relying on a single reading. HP’s cooling-pad guide also recommends recording baseline temperatures and repeating the test under identical conditions.

  1. Record a baseline: Use the laptop on its normal hard surface. Run the same game, benchmark or demanding task for the same length of time, then note CPU and GPU temperatures, sustained clock or benchmark performance, and combined noise.
  2. Repeat on a passive stand: Keep the workload and duration unchanged. This shows whether simply raising the laptop improves airflow enough.
  3. Repeat on the active pad: Use the same power mode, workload and measurement method. If it is a sealed cooler, make sure the laptop sits in the intended position.
  4. Compare like with like: Keep ambient conditions, background activity and power settings consistent. Look for a repeatable change in sustained temperatures or performance, and decide whether any improvement is worth the additional noise and bulk.

Check for other causes of heat before buying

If the laptop gets unusually hot or its fans run loudly while idle, an external cooler may address the wrong problem. Check the room temperature, background CPU or GPU activity, and the manufacturer’s power and fan settings. For an older laptop or symptoms that remain abnormal, dust buildup or a failing internal fan may require service; a cooling pad cannot repair an internal fault. HP’s troubleshooting guidance covers basic ways to assess laptop heat and cooling.
