No. If your apps work, Microsoft gives no general reason to turn off Smart App Control. Keep it on for an additional check against untrusted apps. Consider switching it off only if it blocks a legitimate app you need and the developer cannot provide a properly signed version.
What Smart App Control does
Smart App Control is a Windows 11 security feature that checks apps before they run. Microsoft says a cloud-powered service predicts whether an app is safe. If it cannot make a confident prediction, Windows checks whether the app has a valid signature; an unsigned app or one with an invalid signature is treated as untrusted and blocked. A block does not by itself prove that an app is malware: Microsoft says potentially unwanted apps and apps whose safety cannot be confidently predicted may also be blocked. Microsoft’s Smart App Control FAQ explains the feature.

When to keep it on or turn it off
| Situation | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Your required apps run normally | Keep Smart App Control on to retain this additional protection. |
| A legitimate app you need is blocked, and the developer can offer a signed version | Get the app from the developer and ask whether a version with a valid signature is available. |
| A legitimate app you need is blocked, and no signed version is available | Weigh the app’s importance against losing Smart App Control’s protection before deciding whether to switch it off. This is a personal trade-off, not a universal Microsoft recommendation. |
Smart App Control is not an antivirus replacement. Microsoft says it works alongside Microsoft Defender and other antivirus tools, so having antivirus installed is not, by itself, a reason to disable it.

Can you allow just one blocked app?
No. Microsoft says there is currently no way to bypass Smart App Control protection for an individual app. Its suggested route is to contact the developer and ask for a properly signed version. Turning Smart App Control off is the other user choice Microsoft describes.

How to check its status or switch it off
- Open Windows Security.
- Select App & browser control.
- Choose Smart App Control settings and check whether the status is Evaluation, On, or Off.
- If you decide to disable it, select Off and follow the confirmation shown in Windows.
In Evaluation, Windows assesses whether the feature is suitable for the device and does not block apps. On applies the protection; Off means Smart App Control does not notify you about untrusted apps. Microsoft notes that device circumstances—including enterprise management or developer mode—can affect availability or explain why the feature is off. The Windows Security settings overview describes these states.

Microsoft’s FAQ says recent Windows updates allow Smart App Control to be enabled again without a clean installation. That does not mean every device or Windows build behaves identically, so check the setting on your PC and consult Microsoft’s current guidance if the option is unavailable.

Re-enabling the feature is also different from returning it to Evaluation. Microsoft’s settings overview says that after Evaluation completes or a user manually changes the setting, returning to Evaluation requires reinstalling or resetting Windows. Check the current Windows Security screen rather than assuming an older reset procedure applies to your device.
