Which brush should you use on a knit shoe?
Use a soft-bristle brush on the knit, woven, or mesh upper. adidas advises using a soft brush to avoid wearing away the material, and suggests an old toothbrush as an option for lifting surface dust. A soft-bristle shoe brush is the practical choice for general cleaning; a toothbrush can help with small or hard-to-reach spots.

There is no evidence here that one specific brush brand or model performs best. The useful distinction is bristle stiffness: soft for the upper, firmer only for the outsole.
Match the brush to the shoe surface

adidas’s step-by-step cleaning guide uses a soft brush on the upper and a hard brush on the rubber outsole. Its demonstration shoe is a leather-upper Superstar, not a Primeknit shoe, so the split-brush approach is useful general guidance rather than a Primeknit-specific test. See adidas’s cleaning steps.
How to clean the upper without damaging it
- Remove laces and loose dirt. Brush away surface debris gently before adding water so grit is less likely to be pushed into the fabric.
- Dampen a soft brush. Apply a suitable mild cleaning solution or mild soapy water. Follow the shoe’s own care instructions if its materials or finish need special treatment; product guidance can vary.
- Clean with light, controlled strokes. Work across the upper without forceful scrubbing. adidas color and material designer Charlie Kirihara advises, “Scrub don’t rub when cleaning the upper, this way you won’t wear away the fabric.”
- Lift away dirt and residue. Wipe the area with a clean cloth; a microfiber cloth is useful for picking up loosened dirt.
- Clean the outsole separately. Use a firmer brush on the rubber only, taking care not to brush the knit or mesh upper with it.
- Air-dry the shoes. Let them dry at room temperature rather than applying external heat. adidas’s US guide also says to keep them out of direct sunlight.
The adidas guides do not give identical product guidance, so do not assume a cleaner described for one shoe or kit is right for every knit shoe. Check the shoe’s care instructions when in doubt.
What to avoid on Primeknit, mesh, and other delicate fabrics
- Hard-bristle brushing or aggressive scrubbing on the upper: adidas warns that these can damage weave or mesh materials, including those used in Pure Boost and Ultra Boost models. Its warning is care guidance, not a report of laboratory testing. Read adidas’s running-shoe care guidance.
- Machine washing: adidas cautions that washing machines can discolor or damage fabric.
- External heat: avoid using a heater or similar heat source, which can affect a shoe’s shape; air-dry at room temperature instead.
- Bleach and harsh chemicals: avoid them on the upper. Do not generalize a cleaner’s compatibility claim to other formulas or shoe finishes.
