Short answer: Google Messages does analyze message signals for spam and scam patterns, but its normal Scam Detection and Spam Protection are designed to run machine-learning models on your phone. That is different from a person at Google reading your conversation. The privacy answer depends on the message type and what you do: eligible RCS chats are end-to-end encrypted, while SMS and MMS do not receive that RCS protection; URLs may be uploaded for safety checks; unencrypted message text can be processed briefly in documented fallback cases; and reporting spam deliberately sends sender information and recent messages to Google and carriers.
An optional Enhanced protection mode can also use cloud Gemini analysis in Private AI Compute for difficult conversations. It is a separate, opt-in style of processing whose availability depends on the device and rollout. Here is what each path means in practical terms.

What “read your texts” means in Google Messages
There are two different questions hidden in the phrase “read.” The first is whether software examines a message to classify it as suspicious. The second is whether Google employees or ordinary Google systems can view the conversation in readable form. Scam protection requires the first kind of analysis. It does not automatically imply the second.

Google Messages Help says its spam protection uses machine-learning models operating on the device to detect known spam patterns. Google’s October 22, 2024 security announcement similarly says scam classification happens with on-device models so conversation content is not sent to Google unless you report spam. Google Safety Center describes the feature as real-time, on-device analysis of conversational patterns.

“On-device” means the phone performs the model calculation locally. The app can still handle other data flows that are separate from ordinary message classification, especially URL reputation checks and user-initiated reports. Those exceptions are why the most accurate answer is not “Google never processes message content.”
Where standard Spam Protection processes information
Machine-learning classification on the phone
For standard Spam Protection and Scam Detection, the documented default is local processing. The model looks for patterns associated with spam or scams, such as suspicious conversational behavior, rather than requiring every message to be uploaded for a server-side review. Google’s 2025 Android security update says all processing for the then-described Scam Detection remained on-device and that Spam Protection, including Scam Detection, could be turned off.
Local processing reduces the need to transmit message text, but it is still analysis. Turning on protection authorizes the app to inspect incoming messages on the device so it can warn you or place a conversation in spam. It does not mean the content is ignored; it means the first-line decision is made locally.

URL checks can leave the phone
Google Messages Help documents a specific network check: when a message contains a URL, Google may upload that URL to verify whether it is malicious. A URL can reveal a website address, campaign identifier, or other information embedded in the link even when the surrounding conversation remains on the device. This check is about link reputation, not a claim that the entire chat is uploaded.

Fallback processing for unencrypted messages
The same help documentation says Google’s spam detection may ephemerally process the contents of unencrypted messages when a device cannot perform all filtering locally. “Ephemeral” indicates temporary handling for the filtering task rather than a promise that the content is permanently stored. The qualification matters because it applies to unencrypted messages and to cases where local processing is insufficient; it is not a statement that every conversation follows this path.
RCS, SMS and MMS do not have the same privacy properties
The transport used by a conversation changes what encryption guarantee applies. Google’s privacy basics state that with end-to-end encryption, no one can read the content sent between you and the other person. In Google Messages, that protection applies to eligible RCS chats. It does not automatically extend to traditional SMS or MMS.
| Conversation type | Encryption described by Google | Documented protection processing | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible RCS chat | End-to-end encrypted between sender and recipient | Scam models generally run on the device; a URL may still be uploaded for malicious-link verification | End-to-end encryption protects the message in transit and between participants; it does not prevent your own phone from analyzing it for safety features |
| SMS or MMS | No RCS end-to-end-encryption guarantee | On-device filtering is the standard path, with possible ephemeral processing of unencrypted content when local filtering cannot complete | Do not describe SMS or MMS as receiving the RCS privacy guarantee |
| Any conversation you report | Depends on the underlying transport | Sender details and recent messages with that sender are shared with Google and carriers | Reporting is a deliberate sharing event initiated by the user |
End-to-end encryption should therefore be read narrowly: it protects eligible RCS content from being readable by intermediaries between the participants. It does not mean no software on either endpoint can inspect the message for a security feature, and it does not change the transport used by an SMS or MMS fallback.

Reporting is the clearest point at which information is intentionally sent off the phone. Google’s scam-detection announcement says that reporting a conversation shares only sender details and recent messages with that sender with Google and carriers. “Recent” is not defined as an exact count in the announcement, so the safe interpretation is that the report includes a limited recent portion rather than your entire Messages history.

This action serves a different purpose from automatic detection. The on-device model can warn you without sending the chat to Google. A report supplies evidence that carriers and Google can use to investigate a suspected campaign and improve abuse defenses. Because it is user-triggered, check the conversation you are selecting before confirming a report, especially if it contains personal information or an unrelated legitimate exchange.
Google’s privacy basics also state that information collected in Google Messages is not used for advertising. That statement concerns advertising use; it does not remove the documented safety-processing paths or the information shared when you report a conversation.
Enhanced protection: optional cloud analysis for complex conversations
Google’s current Android scam-protection announcement describes an optional Enhanced protection mode. For complex message context that is difficult to evaluate locally, the mode can use cloud Gemini models through Private AI Compute. Google says the data is encrypted and processed in a dedicated space that is inaccessible to anyone else, including Google.
This mode is materially different from the standard on-device path because cloud infrastructure participates in the analysis. “Inaccessible to Google” is Google’s description of the protected processing environment, not a claim that no system handles the data. The practical choice is between relying on local detection alone and enabling a feature that may send protected context to Private AI Compute for additional analysis.

Enhanced protection is optional, and its availability and rollout vary by device, Android version and account or regional eligibility. If you do not see the setting, that does not by itself indicate that standard Scam Detection is sending all conversations to the cloud; it may simply not have reached your device.

How to turn off Spam Protection and Scam Detection
When the control is available on your device, use this path:
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initials.
- Choose Messages settings.
- Open Protection & safety.
- Tap Spam protection.
- Turn Enable spam protection off.
Google’s help page notes that the option appears only when Spam protection is available on the device. Menu wording or placement can change with app and Android updates, but the documented labels above are the current path supplied by Google. Disabling the feature stops that Messages protection function from screening new conversations; it does not retract information already shared because you reported a conversation, and it does not alter the encryption characteristics of RCS, SMS or MMS.

Google’s Online Security Blog reported that more than 1 billion people use Google Messages and that the service protects users from 2 billion suspicious messages per month. Those are Google-reported scale figures, not independent measurements of detection accuracy, false positives or privacy risk. They indicate the size of the system and the volume of suspicious traffic Google says it handles, but they cannot tell you how often a particular scam will be caught.
Best Value
Any filter can miss a new tactic or incorrectly flag a legitimate message. Treat an alert as a reason to inspect the sender, link and request carefully, not as proof that a message is malicious or safe. Conversely, turning protection off removes an automated warning layer but does not make an SMS, MMS or RCS conversation private in a way it was not before.
Practical privacy decisions
If you want the least network exposure
Leave Enhanced protection off unless you specifically want its additional analysis, and avoid reporting a conversation unless you are comfortable sharing the sender details and recent messages described by Google. Standard protection still performs local analysis and may upload URLs for reputation checks, so “least exposure” does not mean “no processing.”
If you want stronger help with difficult scams
Enhanced protection may provide additional context analysis through Private AI Compute when the option is offered on your device. Review the mode’s description in Messages before enabling it, because it changes the processing location from strictly local detection to a combination of local and protected cloud analysis.
If an alert appears in a legitimate conversation
Do not report the thread automatically. Reporting sends the specified sender details and recent messages to Google and carriers. Instead, verify the sender through a separate trusted channel and remove or ignore the suspicious link without submitting the conversation if you do not want to share it.
Bottom line on whether Google reads your texts
Google Messages scam protection does inspect messages for security signals, normally with machine-learning models running on your phone. That automated inspection is not the same as Google staff reading your chats. Eligible RCS conversations add end-to-end encryption between participants, while SMS and MMS do not. The meaningful exceptions are documented URL uploads, temporary processing of unencrypted content when local filtering cannot finish, deliberate sharing after a spam report, and optional Enhanced protection that uses Gemini in Private AI Compute. Those distinctions let you choose the protection level that fits your privacy expectations instead of relying on an absolute “Google never sees messages” claim.
