The right fix depends on how the person is getting into the call. If you shared a WhatsApp call link, turn on Require approval to join and admit only people you recognize. If an unknown number is calling you directly, enable Silence unknown callers, then block or report the number. For a group call, remove the person from the group after the call and tighten who can add you. Protect IP address in calls is useful for network privacy, but it does not control who may join.
This guide covers each entry route, the exact controls available, what each control does not do, and the recovery steps when an unwanted participant is already present.

Choose the control that matches the way the person entered
WhatsApp has separate protections for call links, direct calls and group calls. Applying the wrong setting can leave the actual entry route open. Use this map first:

When the unwanted person has a WhatsApp call link
A call link is effectively a bearer invitation: anyone who obtains it can request to join. WhatsApp warns that anyone with the link can join, so share it only with people you trust. A link can be forwarded without your knowledge, copied from a chat or exposed in a screenshot. The preventive control is the call’s approval setting, not a general phone privacy switch.
Turn on approval before admitting anyone
- Open the call or call-link screen in WhatsApp.
- Open the participant list or the call controls.
- Turn on Require approval to join.
- Keep the call’s waiting room visible while people request entry.
- For each request, compare the displayed name or number with the person you expected. Tap or click to allow a recognized person; deny requests you cannot verify.
Only the call-link creator receives approval requests and can admit people from the waiting room. The waiting room can hold up to 128 people. If you created the link, do not hand moderation to someone else by assuming another participant can approve entrants; the creator is the account that controls admission.
Deny, remove and block an entrant
Denial prevents a waiting participant from entering that call. If an unwanted person has already been admitted, open the participant list and use the available remove action. If the same account is likely to try again, remove and block it. Blocking is person-specific: it stops that account from sending you WhatsApp messages, calling you and viewing your status updates.
Removal is a response to the current call; it is not a replacement for protecting the link. Someone who still possesses the link may try again, and a different account can make another request. Treat an unfamiliar display name, an unverified number or a sudden request from an account you do not recognize as a reason to deny entry rather than as proof of identity.

Stop using a link that has spread
If the link was posted in a public channel, sent to a large mailing list or forwarded outside the intended group, stop sharing it and create a new invitation for the people you still want. Revoke or otherwise stop using the compromised link when that option is shown in your call controls. Without approval enabled, possession of the old link is enough to attempt entry.
Unused WhatsApp call links expire after 30 days. WhatsApp may also revoke a link for privacy or security reasons. Expiration is not an immediate response to a live leak: a link that is still active can be used before it expires, so use the waiting-room control and stop distributing the link as soon as you suspect exposure.
Share links in a way that preserves identity checks
- Send the link privately to the people expected on the call instead of posting it in an open group, public profile or forum.
- Tell invitees what name or number they should expect to see, so the creator can recognize a request.
- Do not treat a familiar display name as authentication; confirm an unexpected request through a separate channel when the call is sensitive.
- Turn on approval before distributing the link, not after the first unknown request appears.
When an unknown number keeps calling you directly
A direct call from an unfamiliar number is different from a call-link request. The call does not enter a waiting room, so there is no approval button that can screen it before your phone rings. Use call silencing for interruption control, then block or report the specific account.
Silence calls from numbers you do not know
- Open WhatsApp.
- Go to Settings > Privacy.
- Find the calling controls and enable Silence unknown callers.
The phone will no longer ring for callers WhatsApp identifies as unknown. Silencing is deliberately less aggressive than blocking: the call remains visible in the Calls tab and in notifications, so you can review it later and decide whether the number was legitimate. A silenced caller can still leave a record of the attempt and can still try again.

Block a persistent caller
- Open the caller’s chat, or open the call record in the Calls tab.
- Open the contact or conversation details.
- Choose Block and confirm.
Blocking stops that person from sending WhatsApp messages, placing WhatsApp calls and seeing your status updates. It applies to the blocked account; it does not prevent a different number from contacting you.
Report spam, harassment or abuse
Use Report when the calls or messages are spam, scams, threats or other problematic conduct. WhatsApp receives recent message and call metadata with the report for review. Reporting and blocking can be used together: report the behavior, then block the account to stop further contact from that number.
Keep evidence outside WhatsApp if the conduct may matter later. Record dates, times and the numbers involved, and preserve threatening messages before blocking. Do not respond merely to test whether a caller is genuine; a response confirms that the account is active.

When the unwanted participant is in a group call
WhatsApp group voice calls are tied to group membership. Only members of that group can participate, and WhatsApp documents a maximum of 32 people in a group voice call. If someone you do not recognize is present, first identify how that account became a member of the group.

Check the member list after ending the call
- Leave or end the group voice call.
- Open the group chat and its participant list.
- Compare the unfamiliar account with the group’s recent additions, former members and expected invitees.
- If you are an administrator and the account should not be there, remove it from the group. If you are not an administrator, ask an administrator to do so.
- Block and report the account when its conduct warrants those actions.
WhatsApp’s group-call instructions state that a person cannot be removed during a group voice call. Ending the call is therefore part of the response: handle membership and blocking from the group chat after participants are no longer connected.
Limit who may add you to groups
- Open Settings > Privacy > Groups.
- Choose the audience that may add you directly: Everyone, My Contacts or My Contacts Except….
- Use the exception list when most contacts are acceptable but particular people should not be able to add you.
These settings govern direct additions to groups. They do not automatically invalidate a group invite link that someone chooses to accept. An invite link remains an optional route into the group, so do not accept links from unknown sources and ask administrators to replace a link that has been widely shared.
Audit group administration
- Review which members are administrators and whether an admin recently changed.
- Ask the person who shared the call context to confirm the intended participant list.
- Remove stale members before starting a sensitive call.
- After a compromised invite link, create or distribute a replacement link rather than relying only on the group’s add-to-groups setting.
Protect your IP address without confusing it with admission control
Protect IP address in calls addresses a different risk: network-level exposure. When enabled, WhatsApp relays calls through its servers so the other party does not learn your IP address directly. This can be useful when you do not trust the network or the person on the other end.

- Go to Privacy > Advanced.
- Enable Protect IP address in calls.
Relaying can change how a call is routed, but it does not decide who may enter. A person with a call link can still request or join according to the link’s approval setting, and a member of a group can still participate. Pair IP protection with Require approval to join, group membership controls, silencing, blocking or reporting according to the entry route.
What each action does, and when to use it

Troubleshooting common situations
“I enabled silence, but I still see the call.”
That is expected. Silencing prevents the ringtone; it does not erase the call from the Calls tab or notifications. Open the record if you need to identify the number, then block or report it.
“An unknown person joined even though I shared the link privately.”
Assume the link was copied or forwarded. Turn on Require approval to join, deny unrecognized requests, remove and block the participant if possible, and stop using the exposed link. Create a fresh invitation for the intended people.
“I turned on IP protection, but a stranger can still join.”
IP protection is not a waiting-room feature. It hides your IP address by relaying the call; it does not authenticate invitees. Use call-link approval or group membership controls for admission.

WhatsApp does not provide participant removal during a group voice call. End or leave the call, remove the account from the group if you have admin rights, and block or report it. Then review who can add members and whether a group invite link needs replacing.
“The menu is different on my phone or computer.”
WhatsApp can change labels and layouts by operating system and release. Start at the current Settings > Privacy screen, then look for the named controls: Silence unknown callers, Groups and, under Advanced, Protect IP address in calls. Call-link approval appears in the call’s participant or call controls rather than in the general privacy page.
A practical prevention checklist
- Enable call-link approval before sending a link to anyone.
- Share links only with the intended audience and replace a link that has escaped.
- Check the waiting room yourself; only the creator receives approval requests.
- Enable Silence unknown callers if unsolicited one-to-one calls are disruptive.
- Block accounts that continue contacting you and report spam, scams or harassment.
- Review Settings > Privacy > Groups and choose the narrowest practical add-to-groups option.
- Remember that group calls allow up to 32 members and include only current group members.
- Use Protect IP address in calls when IP exposure is the concern, but do not mistake it for participant control.
- For sensitive meetings, verify unexpected identities through a separate trusted channel before admitting them.
Limits worth remembering
No single WhatsApp switch handles every unwanted-call scenario. Approval controls call-link entry, silence controls ringing, blocking controls a particular account, group privacy controls direct additions, and IP protection controls network exposure. A caller can still attempt contact through another number, and a forwarded invitation can still reach people outside the original audience. Match the control to the route, then combine controls when more than one risk is present.
