The sources available explain why a stationary magnet is different from the moving magnets used to generate electricity, but they do not report a controlled test comparing the same refrigerator with and without decorative magnets.
Why a stationary fridge magnet is different from a generator
Magnets can help generate electricity, but the relevant process involves motion. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that moving a magnet relative to a wire coil can push electrons through the wire and create an electric current. That general principle does not show that a decorative magnet sitting still on the outside of a refrigerator changes the appliance’s electricity use. The EIA’s explanation of how electricity is generated is about that moving-magnet process, not an effect from a stationary refrigerator magnet.

Endesa’s 2019 myth-busting explanation likewise says decorative magnets do not increase refrigerator power consumption, describing their magnetic fields as too insignificant to cross the door. That is an explanatory claim, not a published controlled test. Endesa’s explanation of decorative magnets and refrigerator power use also rejects the claim that such magnets affect food.

Tom’s Guide quoted Matthew Glynn, senior product marketing manager at Hisense U.K., saying, “In short, no, fridge magnets do not affect the performance or energy efficiency of your refrigerator.” That is an attributed expert comment reported by a secondary publication, not a measurement from an experiment. Üsküdar News Agency reported Prof. Dr. Selim Şeker, head of Üsküdar University’s Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, saying the magnets’ field does not affect the refrigerator’s operating principle and that their effect on the bill is zero. The same report says no scientific research or test had been conducted on the specific question. Treat Şeker’s statement as an expert assessment, not proof that a published experiment measured an exact zero change. Read Üsküdar News Agency’s report.
What to check if your refrigerator seems expensive to run
Removing decorative magnets is not an evidence-based energy-saving fix. For practical checks, ENERGY STAR recommends keeping the refrigerator at 35–38°F, placing it away from heat sources, allowing a few inches of airflow behind it, checking that the door seals close airtight, and minimizing how long the door stays open. For older models, follow the owner’s manual for safe condenser-coil cleaning; the procedure is not necessarily the same for every refrigerator. See ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator guidance.

- Check the temperature: Confirm the setting is appropriate for the model and the food being stored; ENERGY STAR’s recommended refrigerator range is 35–38°F.
- Check placement and clearance: Keep the refrigerator away from heat sources and leave a few inches behind it for airflow, subject to the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Inspect the gasket: Look for gaps or damage and check whether the door closes airtight. Replace a failed seal only with a part compatible with the exact refrigerator model.
- Reduce door-open time: Plan what you need before opening the door and close it promptly.
- Use the manual for coil care: On older models, clean condenser coils only as directed by the manufacturer.
- Consider age when evaluating operating cost: ENERGY STAR says refrigerators over 15 years old could be costing more than $95 per year to run. This is a general estimate, not a guaranteed cost for an individual appliance or a savings estimate from removing magnets.
If you are considering replacement, compare certified energy efficiency, annual energy use, capacity, features and expected operating cost for the models you are actually considering. The available evidence does not establish a wattage, percentage or dollar amount by which decorative magnets change a refrigerator’s consumption.
