Kenya Power’s published prepaid instructions still tell customers to buy electricity credit and enter a 20-digit token on the meter or customer interface unit (CIU). The utility also describes two-way smart metering for large-power, SME and selected domestic customers, but it has not said that remote prepaid loading is available to every household. The result is a mixed metering landscape—not a confirmed nationwide switch to automatic top-ups.
What the 20-digit token does
A prepaid token is a unique 20-digit code that adds purchased electricity units to the meter. Kenya Power’s customer guidance describes a workflow in which the customer buys credit, receives a token and keys it into the meter or CIU. Its prepaid FAQ provides instructions for entering the code and refers customers to M-Pesa and *977# purchase or self-service routes. Kenya Power customer support and the prepaid meter FAQ describe these account and customer-service arrangements.

That documented manual step is why many customers still type tokens. The available utility statements do not establish a current nationwide count of prepaid customers who can receive credit remotely, or a household eligibility map for remote loading.

“Split” is a useful description of different arrangements coexisting, not an official consumer category. Kenya Power serves both prepaid and postpaid customers, and its 2025 announcement describes distinct technologies and customer groups:
#1 Best Overall
- WiFi Smart CT, No Cut Off Circuits: The SA1 is a WiFi smart current transformer designed for energy monitoring. It cannot cut off circuits. Only requires the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi during the pairing process
- Easy Installation and Broad Compatibility: SA1 with 80cm (31.5in) neutral and live wires for quick connection. Compatible with most U.S. household circuit panels. Supports 120VAC single phase (L 120VAC+N) or 240VAC split phase (L 120VAC+L 120VAC) systems
- Flexible Placement Without Space Limits: As a window-type current transformer, the SA1 uses its sensing hole to collect energy data from any single circuit within its 31.5in range, free from space or location constraints
- Real-Time Unidirectional Power Tracking (AC Active Power Only): Monitor current, voltage, forward power, forward power consumption and CPU temperature via the Tuya/Smart Life app. Note: Not designed to measure reverse electricity; the app will display the sum of absolute values (forward and reverse electricity) if detected
- Comprehensive Energy Data and Analysis: (1)Class 1.0 accuracy ensures reliable monitoring with detailed historical data (view by hour, day, month, or year). Easily track usage trends to optimize electricity consumption, suitable for homes saving on bills and businesses tracking energy conservation. (2)Export historical data via email for deeper analysis. (3)Clear electricity data with one click in the app, saving time and effort
| Arrangement or process | What Kenya Power says | What that does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Prepaid token meter | Customers buy a token and enter its code on the meter or CIU, according to the prepaid FAQ. | That every prepaid meter can be credited remotely. |
| Postpaid meter readings using OCR | In November 2025, Kenya Power said it was targeting 1.8 million postpaid meters for optical character recognition (OCR) reading. Readings are manually taken and submitted monthly; OCR scans the display to collect readings. | That reading a meter automatically loads prepaid credit. |
| Smart meters for selected customer groups | Kenya Power said two-way smart metering supports remote readings and disconnection or reconnection for large-power, SME and selected domestic customers. | That every household is eligible, enrolled or able to top up remotely. |
| Specified three-phase smart meter | A Kenya Power specification issued 10 February 2023 describes a three-phase meter with selectable prepaid and postpaid modes, and requires automatic load restoration after a prepaid token top-up. | That this meter is installed in every home or that it removes manual token entry nationwide. |
The OCR and smart-meter descriptions appear in Kenya Power’s November 2025 announcement. Its three-phase smart-meter specification describes a capability requirement for that meter class; it is not evidence of household-wide deployment.
OCR is not automatic prepaid loading
OCR means optical character recognition: software reads digits displayed on a meter. Kenya Power’s 2025 announcement presents it as a way to collect postpaid readings and improve billing accuracy. It does not describe OCR as a way to vend or load prepaid units.

Smart metering is a separate capability. Kenya Power says two-way communications support remote readings and disconnection or reconnection for selected customer groups. That statement does not say that all prepaid households can receive credit without entering a token. The two technologies address different tasks: one reads a display for billing; the other provides remote communication with certain meters.
What the 2024 meter update changed—and what it did not
Kenya Power’s “Update Token Meter Yako” campaign was a software and security update for STS prepaid meters, not an announcement of automatic top-ups. In June 2024, the utility said it was targeting 7.4 million prepaid meters. Customers received reset and update codes and were instructed to load previously purchased tokens before entering those codes. The announced deadline was 31 August 2024.

- Multi-function power monitor: Our electric usage monitor can monitor the power (W), electricity(kWh), voltage(V), frequency(Hz), current(A), power factor(PF), unit price($/kWh), total cost($) of your appliances. By switching 8 display modes, you can easily know the various parameters while the appliance is working. The “electricity” mode can calculate and display how much power your appliance uses. And the “total cost” mode will show how much electricity bill it cost in cumulative time
- Overload protection: When the loading power of the appliance is over the default overload threshold 1800W, the whole display with backlight and the word “OVERLOAD” will keep flashing to warn the users. Please turn off the appliance for safety concern
- Premium Material: The whole body of our energy meter is made of high-quality ABS material. It makes our home electricity usage monitor more long lasting, fireproof and anti-drop. The standard US socket and plug is suitable for all US standard appliances
- Backlight Display: With white backlight and black words, the LCD display of our home power monitor can display the data clearer and help you to read the data easier no matter day or night. The backlight will only lights up when the device is connected to AC power. If no button is pressed, the backlight turns off automatically after 10 minutes. You can also press the "UP" button to turn off the backlight manually, and press any button to turn on backlight again
- Easy to reset: No reset tool needed, our appliance power usage meter is easy to reset. You can press the “M” button for 5 seconds directly to reset the device. After reset, all cumulative data (electricity quantity, cost) will be cleared, and all settings will be restored to factory settings
Kenya Power said meters not updated by the deadline would not accept newly generated tokens after it. Its progress notice reported 5.64 million meters updated by 21 August 2024; that is a dated progress figure, not a current completion total. The utility also said the software update did not affect the tariff. The campaign and deadline are described in the June 2024 announcement and the deadline and progress notice; the deadline has passed.

If the meter rejects a token
- Check that all 20 digits were entered correctly.
- Confirm that the token is being entered on the meter it was purchased for.
- If both checks are correct and the meter still rejects it, contact Kenya Power through its prepaid meter support guidance.
If the CIU does not connect or keeps switching off
- Check the CIU batteries and replace them if the keypad keeps switching off. Kenya Power says the CIU does not charge its batteries and identifies alkaline batteries as a preferred choice; the FAQ does not specify a battery size for every CIU model.
- Try the socket used for the CIU and check that the meter has power.
- Check the breaker. If the connection problem persists, contact the utility rather than assuming the batteries are the cause.
If purchased units seem unusually low
Kenya Power says some debt may be deducted from token purchases and advises customers to check tariff details with the utility. Its guidance does not say that typing the token changes the unit allocation.
