Do Free Steam Games Stay in Your Library Forever?

Usually, yes: a free-to-play game added to your Steam account stays associated with that account. But “forever” is not guaranteed. A missing listing may simply be hidden or filtered out, while account deletion, a revoked gift, or applicable license terms can end access.

What “free to play” means on Steam

Steam says free-to-play games are free to download and play without a subscription or credit card. Some games offer in-game purchases, and an individual game may set its own limitations. That free-to-play description is not a promise of perpetual access: Steam’s Subscriber Agreement says content is licensed, not sold, and access can end in circumstances set out in the agreement.

Steam’s rules for limited accounts and a game’s own limitations are separate from whether the game appears in your library. A feature restriction does not, by itself, mean the game has been removed.

If a free game is missing from your library

A missing listing does not necessarily mean you lost access. Steam’s support guidance recommends checking these possibilities:

1. Confirm you are signed in to the Steam account where you originally added or activated the game. Steam says games activated on another account will not appear on the account you are currently using.
2. Check the Library filter; it may be hiding the game from the current view.
3. Check your Hidden Games list in the Steam client.

Steam also notes that a “Pre-Load Complete” status can mean the account does not own the game or no longer has access to it through Family Sharing. That status is not proof that a free-to-play entitlement was permanently removed.

When access can actually end

Deleting your Steam account

Steam says deleting an account permanently deletes its game licenses, and the account cannot be restored after deletion. A deletion request is queued after a 30-day restriction period; Steam says you can cancel the request during that period.

A gift is refunded or revoked

A game received as a gift is a distinct case from a free-to-play game added directly to your account. Steam says that when a gift is refunded because of fraud or a payment dispute, it is removed from the recipient’s library.

License or service changes

Steam’s Subscriber Agreement allows Valve to restrict or cancel an account or subscription in specified circumstances, including when Valve stops providing a subscription generally or when a user breaches the agreement. The agreement describes access as licensed, not owned, so a library entry is not an unconditional guarantee that access will last forever.

What delisting or a game shutdown means

The general Steam support and agreement pages do not establish one universal outcome for every delisted or shut-down game. Whether an existing entitlement remains available, and whether the game can still be played, can depend on the title and its terms. A listing in your library should not be treated as a guarantee that the game’s online services will keep working.
