There is no reliable general rule that expensive analogue interconnects improve sound. Published findings support a narrower conclusion: cable pathways can be distinguishable in some listening conditions, but the available evidence does not show that higher price predicts what listeners will hear. For most buyers, connector compatibility, cable length and electrical noise are more useful guides than prestige or cost.
What does the evidence say about audible differences?
The evidence is mixed, and its limits matter. In a 2021 paper in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, Milind N. Kunchur reported that listeners could distinguish two analogue-interconnect pathways using a high-performance audio system and an extended-duration listening protocol. The abstract describes those tested pathways and conditions; it does not establish that expensive cables generally sound better, or that the result applies to every cable and system. The accessible record does not provide enough methodological detail to assess the protocol fully. Read the AES paper record.

A separate AES E-Library article, “Audio Cable Distortion is Not a Myth!”, says repeatable tests had not found cable effects more surprising than mild frequency-selective attenuation. Its record does not provide a publication date or full methods, so that statement should be treated as the article’s reported finding—not proof that every conceivable cable is indistinguishable. Read the AES article record.
Together, these records do not establish a price-to-audibility relationship. They support neither “all cables sound the same” nor “paying more guarantees better sound.” A listening review can offer useful impressions, but it is not equivalent to a controlled, blinded experiment. What Hi-Fi?’s guide describes comparative listening across a reference system and a more price-compatible system; that is buying-guide methodology, not a blinded scientific trial. Choose the connection your equipment and room need
RCA and XLR are not simply cheap and expensive versions of the same choice. They are different connection types, and the components must have matching sockets for the intended connection.
| Connection | What it is suited to | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| RCA | Common, cost-effective unbalanced analogue connections | Check that both components have the appropriate RCA inputs and outputs, and buy a suitable length. |
| XLR | Balanced connections that can reject electrical interference and radio-frequency noise better, especially over longer runs | Use it only when both components support the matching XLR connection; it is most relevant where distance or noise exposure makes interference rejection useful. |
These are practical connection differences, not evidence that a more expensive cable produces a generally superior sound. The cited buying guide characterizes RCA as common and cost-effective and XLR as useful for interference rejection, particularly on longer runs. What Hi-Fi?’s guide

- Buy with Confidence: With Monoprice's Lifetime Warranty on all Cables, you can rest assured we stand behind our products and our customers.
- This is a premium two-channel audio cable made of RG-59 75 ohm coaxial cable.
- The cable uses a 22AWG conductor and is shielded to prevent EMI or RFI interference from entering.
- The connectors are gold plated, for smooth connections and to prevent corrosion.
- Color-coded rubber rings to ensure a firm grip when installing or removing the cable.
What to check before buying a replacement
- Match the sockets. Identify the source component’s output and the receiving component’s input. Choose RCA or XLR based on those connections rather than on the cable’s price.
- Measure the route. Select a length that reaches comfortably without leaving a large, tangled excess. Longer runs and noise-prone routes are the situations in which balanced XLR may be more useful, if both devices support it.
- Look for reliable fit and construction. Correct termination and secure contacts matter to a dependable connection. Route the cable sensibly to reduce exposure to potential sources of interference; a costly finish is not evidence of a sound improvement.
- Diagnose noise before upgrading. If you hear hum or other interference, check that connections are secure and consider whether the run is long or routed through a noisy area. Where the equipment offers balanced XLR at both ends, that connection may be a better practical fit.
For a routine, compatible RCA connection, a correctly made, appropriately sized cable is a sensible purchase. Spend more only for a concrete need—such as the connector, length, fit or construction required by your setup—not on an assumption that price alone ensures audible improvement.
Keep speaker-cable claims separate
The Audio Society of Minnesota reported a 2012 blind comparison of four speaker-cable sets, from inexpensive zip cord to expensive designs, involving more than 50 members and guests. That was a speaker-cable test, not an analogue-interconnect test, so its participant count and outcome cannot be used to answer whether expensive interconnects sound different.
