But movement does not automatically mean a person was fully awakened or felt disturbed. Studies also report generally good sleep for many owners, so the evidence does not support a blanket claim that dogs ruin their owners’ sleep.
Does a dog in the bedroom affect sleep differently from a dog on the bed?
Yes, the distinction matters. In a 2017 study, 40 healthy adults without sleep disorders and their dogs were monitored for seven nights. The adults wore accelerometers and the dogs wore validated dog accelerometers. Average human sleep efficiency was 81% ± 7%, and average total sleep time was 404 ± 99 minutes. Sleep efficiency was lower when the dog was on the bed than when it was in the room (P=.003). These are averages from that study’s selected sample, not predictions for an individual.

The authors, Krahn and colleagues, concluded: “Humans with a single dog in their bedroom maintained good sleep efficiency; however, the dog’s position on/off the bed made a difference.” The finding distinguishes bed-sharing from sharing a bedroom; it does not establish that every dog on a bed disrupts every owner. Objective movement and perceived sleep disturbance are not the same measure. In a 2020 actigraphy study of 12 adult women and their dogs, researchers recorded an average of 10 nights per participant, for 124 nights total. Dog movement tripled the likelihood of a human transition from a non-moving to a moving state. Yet the women rarely reported that their dogs disrupted their sleep.

A movement association cannot by itself show that the dog caused a full awakening, reduced next-day functioning, or a clinical sleep problem. The study was small and limited to women and their dogs, so it describes a possible pattern rather than a rate that applies to all owners. Read the open-access study.
What other studies say about perceived disruption
A very small exploratory study found a measurable but mild effect
In a 2018 exploratory study, five female Australian dog owners and their dogs were observed for seven nights. Dogs were active for about 20% of the night. The reported chance of human wakefulness was 10.55% during dog activity, compared with 2.45% during inactivity. The authors described the overall reduction in sleep quality as measurable but relatively mild. With only five owner-dog pairs, these figures should not be treated as a general estimate. Sleep-clinic patients reported different experiences
A 2015 report surveyed and interviewed 150 consecutive patients at the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine in Arizona. Of those patients, 74 (49%) said they had pets. Among pet-owning patients, 20% described their pets as disruptive, while 41% described them as unobtrusive or beneficial. These are perceptions reported by a sleep-clinic sample, not prevalence figures for dog owners generally; the results also concern pets rather than dogs alone. Read the study abstract in PubMed.

Does pet ownership generally mean better or worse sleep?
That is a different question from whether a dog sharing a bed affects sleep. A 2025 cross-sectional online survey of 1,256 US participants found that non-pet owners reported worse sleep than pet owners. Participants who owned both a dog and a cat reported the best sleep among the four ownership groups. The authors reported mediation involving anxiety symptoms, perceived stress, light exposure, and sleep-wake timing.

Because the survey was cross-sectional, it cannot establish that owning a pet caused better sleep. It assessed pet ownership broadly rather than isolating where a dog slept at night, so it cannot settle the bed-sharing question. Read the study abstract in PubMed.

Yes. A 1993 observation study of 24 domestic dogs in urban settings recorded 18 of them. The observed dogs averaged 23 sleep-wake episodes in eight hours, with an average of 16 minutes asleep and five minutes awake per episode. Nine of 14 owners unwittingly disrupted their dogs’ sleep. The study offers context about dogs’ nighttime activity and the two-way nature of disturbance; it is not a modern estimate of how often owners’ sleep is affected. Read the study abstract.

What can you take from the evidence?
- A dog sleeping in the room is not equivalent to a dog sleeping on the bed; the 2017 study found lower measured sleep efficiency with the dog on the bed.
- Movement recorded by a device can coincide between dog and owner even when the owner rarely reports feeling disturbed.
- Studies differ in what they measured: movement, sleep efficiency, owner perceptions, or general pet ownership. Those outcomes are not interchangeable.
- The co-sleeping studies were small and selective. They do not establish the same effects for all dogs, owners, household arrangements, or people with sleep disorders.
