Some dash cams record sound through a built-in microphone, but that does not mean every model is recording audio now. The setting depends on the camera, its configuration, and sometimes the recording mode. Look for a control labelled Record Audio, Audio Recording, Voice Recording, or Microphone in the camera or its companion app. Turn it off, then play back a new clip to confirm the change.
Do dash cams record audio?
Some do: a built-in microphone can capture sound inside the vehicle while the camera records video. Whether audio is enabled by default—and whether it is being captured in a particular mode—varies by model. Check the exact camera’s manual rather than assuming that a microphone icon or a setting on another brand works the same way.

For example, Garmin says the Dash Cam X210 records audio with its integrated microphone while video is recording. Hyundai’s 2026 owner manual, by contrast, says sound is not recorded during continuous parked recording or time-lapse recording on the documented vehicle. That Hyundai behavior should not be generalized to other vehicles or aftermarket cameras.
How to turn off dash-cam audio
- Identify the exact camera model. Check the device label, its companion app, or the manual. Instructions can differ between models from the same manufacturer.
- Find the audio control. Check the camera’s settings and, if available, the companion app. Look for Record Audio, Audio Recording, Voice Recording, Microphone, or a microphone icon. Some models also use a physical button or voice control.
- Switch audio recording off. Save the setting and follow any prompt to reconnect or restart the camera.
- Record and play back a new clip. Verify that the new recording has no sound. A screen icon may be an action button rather than a status indicator, and on some products a change takes effect only after the camera reboots.
- If sound is still present, check the model’s instructions. Look for separate controls, driver-profile settings, or recording modes that may affect audio.
Instructions for selected cameras
Garmin Dash Cam X210
On the X210, select Settings > Camera > Record Audio to change audio recording. Garmin also documents voice controls for turning audio recording on or off. The menu path is model-specific; Garmin’s instructions for the Dash Cam 45/54/55/65W describe the same path, but it should not be assumed to apply to other models or brands. Hyundai integrated dash cam
In the vehicle covered by Hyundai’s 2026 owner manual, open Dash Cam on the infotainment screen or go to Setup > Vehicle > Dash Cam. The settings include whether to record sound and are linked to driver profiles. The manual also says sound is not recorded during continuous parked recording or time-lapse recording. These instructions apply to the documented vehicle, not every Hyundai model: 2026 Hyundai owner’s manual.
How to tell whether audio is really off
Do not rely on an icon alone unless the manual explains it. Cobra notes that on some of its described models, a slashed microphone in the top status area means audio is off, while a slashed microphone in the lower action area can indicate a button that will mute the microphone when pressed. The meaning depends on the icon’s location and the model. Play back a new clip to check directly: Cobra’s explanation of microphone indicators.

If the clip still contains sound, check whether the camera has a separate cabin camera or microphone control, whether a different driver profile is active, and whether the change requires a reboot. Hyundai’s documented profile behavior and Nexar’s reboot requirement illustrate why a setting change may not behave identically across devices.

Rules for recording conversations and capturing passenger audio vary by jurisdiction. Check the current requirements wherever you use the vehicle, including any notice or consent obligations. Garmin’s X210 manual cautions: “Some jurisdictions may prohibit recording audio in the vehicle or may require that all passengers have knowledge of the recording and provide consent before you record audio in the vehicle.” This is a general caution, not a statement of the law in any particular location.
