Not always. Plain, dry chocolate candy can generally be stored at room temperature, but treats with fresh fruit, cream, dairy, or another perishable filling may need refrigeration. The filling and the product’s storage directions—not the chocolate coating alone—determine what to do.
Which chocolate-covered treats need refrigeration?
Start with the package label. If it says “keep refrigerated,” follow that direction. The FDA advises putting foods that require refrigeration in the refrigerator as soon as you get them home; its guidance also recommends checking storage instructions on food labels (FDA: Are You Storing Food Safely?).

- Plain, dry chocolate candy: Refrigeration is not automatically required. USDA FSIS lists “Chocolate candy / other confections” as suitable for “Cold or room temperature” in its mail-order food storage chart (USDA FSIS: Mail Order Food Safety).
- Fresh fruit or perishable fillings: Treats made with fresh fruit, cream, dairy, or another ingredient that requires refrigeration should be refrigerated according to the label or recipe. The USDA chart’s broad confection category does not establish that these treats are shelf-stable.
- Homemade treats: Use the recipe’s storage directions and the needs of its most perishable ingredient. There is no single storage rule for every homemade chocolate-covered treat.
How long can refrigerated treats sit out?
For foods that require refrigeration, FDA guidance sets a room-temperature limit of two hours, reduced to one hour when the air temperature is above 90°F (32°C). These limits apply to foods that need refrigeration; they are not a universal shelf life for every chocolate-covered confection (FDA: Are You Storing Food Safely?).

USDA FSIS describes 40–140°F (4–60°C) as the temperature range in which pathogenic bacteria can grow rapidly (USDA FSIS: Refrigeration & Food Safety). If a perishable treat has been left out beyond the applicable time limit, do not use its smell or appearance to judge safety: illness-causing bacteria may not change either.

How should you store treats that need refrigeration?
Keep the refrigerator at or below 40°F (4°C), the maximum temperature recommended in FDA consumer guidance (FDA: Refrigerator Thermometers—Cold Facts about Food Safety). Store refrigerated treats covered, in a covered container, or in a sealed food bag to protect them from contamination and odors. For plain confections whose label permits room-temperature storage, follow the package directions instead.
