Huawei specifies a dual-layer OLED with BT.2020 wide color gamut for its Mate 90 Pro Max; OPPO’s Find X9 BT.2020 claim, by contrast, refers to Log video capture and color grading, not its display panel.
What BT.2020 claims say—and what they do not
BT.2020 is a color-space standard with a wider gamut than DCI-P3. A phone may refer to BT.2020 in connection with its display, its camera’s recorded video, or a broader content pipeline. Those are different capabilities: a recording format does not establish the gamut emitted by the screen, and a manufacturer’s display specification is not the same as an independent measurement of the panel.

To establish that one phone panel covers more color than another, a comparison needs a defined coverage metric and the same measurement basis. It should also identify the precise phone model and regional variant, software, and display mode. The official sources described here do not provide a like-for-like independent test of Chinese and Samsung phones.

Huawei support material says the screen’s BT.2020 gamut coverage is 32% higher than P3. That figure should be read as Huawei’s claim: the reviewed support page does not establish independent validation or provide a detailed measurement method. Huawei also describes a broader color pipeline involving capture, recording, display, editing, wireless projection, screenshots, wallpapers, and sharing. OPPO Find X9: a video-capture workflow
OPPO’s India product page describes shooting Log video in BT.2020, with up to 10-bit depth and HDR for color grading and professional workflows. How to interpret the Samsung Display announcement
Samsung Display announced a wide-gamut OLED technology with up to 96% BT.2020 color coverage and up to 3,000 nits in High Brightness Mode at SID Display Week 2026. The announcement describes display technology; it does not identify a Samsung smartphone that ships with this panel, so it cannot establish the gamut or brightness of a particular Samsung phone.
Samsung Display also says BT.2020 is “approximately 1.7 times broader than DCI-P3.” That comparison describes the relative breadth of the color-space standards, not a measured OLED panel covering 1.7 times as much color as DCI-P3. What a fair phone comparison needs
When comparing actual handsets, check that each figure describes the same thing and was obtained on the same basis. A BT.2020 percentage without a stated measurement method is difficult to compare with another maker’s number or with a DCI-P3 figure.
- Panel versus video: Separate display-panel gamut from camera capture, recording, and grading color spaces.
- Coverage metric: Confirm what “coverage” means and compare BT.2020 and DCI-P3 values measured with a consistent method.
- Claim versus result: Label manufacturer specifications as claims unless an independent measurement supports them.
- Exact configuration: Check the device model, regional version, software, and display mode; do not assume every market variant is identical.
Even a wider measured gamut would not, on its own, establish better-looking images. Perceived display quality also depends on how content is mastered and rendered and on other panel characteristics; a gamut label alone cannot settle the comparison.
