The PC still runs the games; your phone supplies the screen and controls, so the host computer must be powered on, running Steam, and reachable over a network.
What a phone-based Steam setup can—and cannot—do
Steam Link streams a game from a host PC to your phone. It does not convert the phone into a Steam Deck or install the PC game locally. Unlike a standalone handheld gaming computer, this setup depends on the PC staying available and on a sufficiently stable network. You’ll need a phone, a compatible mobile controller, Steam Link, a PC with Steam, and a network connection. Steam’s Android setup instructions describe connecting the app to a host PC running Steam; Steam also provides Apple-device instructions.

A phone-mounted controller makes the setup feel more like a handheld than playing with touch controls alone. Before choosing one, check the phone’s connector and physical dimensions, whether your case has to come off, the control layout and ergonomics, and whether the controller supports passthrough charging.

Razer lists Kishi V2 versions for USB-C and Lightning phones and describes passthrough charging. Check the current compatibility guidance for your exact phone and controller model rather than assuming that a connector match guarantees a fit. Razer’s Kishi V2 product information is one place to verify its model details. Backbone also recommends its One controller for this kind of Steam Link setup in its guide.
Set up Steam Link at home
- Check the phone and controller fit. Confirm the connector, supported phone dimensions, and case requirements against the controller maker’s current guidance.
- Install Steam Link. Get the app for your phone and follow its sign-in and pairing prompts. Steam’s Android instructions list supported controllers, including Razer Kishi.
- Prepare the host PC. Turn it on, launch Steam, and sign in. During initial pairing, Steam’s Android guidance calls for the phone and PC to be on the same network.
- Pair, connect the controller, and start streaming. Follow the app’s host-pairing process, then choose a game and test its controls.
Not every PC game is designed for a controller. A title that expects keyboard and mouse input may be awkward to play this way, so check the game’s control options and try it before settling in for a longer session.

Play away from home
Remote play can work over Wi-Fi or cellular when the connection is stable, but the host PC must remain powered on with Steam running and must be reachable from the phone. Check the network you will actually use and test a session before relying on it. There is no single bandwidth or latency threshold established here that guarantees a good experience across phones, PCs, and networks.

Picture quality and responsiveness depend on the particular host, phone, and connection. Treat them as things to test, not guaranteed results. If streaming is inconsistent, try again on a more stable connection and confirm the PC is still online and Steam is open.

Steam Link and another PC-streaming option
Steam Link is the direct route when you want to stream a Steam library. Razer PC Remote Play is a separate option for streaming from a Windows PC to supported iOS and Android devices; Razer says it supports Steam as well as other PC game platforms. Its app and operating-system requirements can change, so verify the current setup details before choosing it.
Razer announced PC Remote Play on April 10, 2025, describing mobile streaming for Steam and other PC platforms: Razer’s PC Remote Play announcement. This is a different streaming path, not a way to run PC games locally on the phone.
