Do Art TVs Need a Subscription to Display Artwork?

An art TV does not always require a subscription: personal photos and selected free art may be available at no cost, while premium catalogs can require membership.

No—not for every way of displaying art. Some art TVs let you use personal photos or a selection of free images without paying. A subscription may unlock a larger premium catalog, but the details depend on the brand, model, software and country. You do not necessarily need a subscription just to use an art-display mode.

What a subscription pays for—and what it does not

An art TV combines a display feature with a source of images. Those are separate things: the TV can provide a way to show images, while the manufacturer may charge for access to some or all of its curated artwork catalog.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That distinction matters if you are deciding whether to keep paying. A paid catalog may be worthwhile for its breadth, curation or access to particular works. But if your goal is simply to put your own photos on the screen, a manufacturer may offer a separate route that does not depend on that catalog subscription. Free selections may also be available, although their size and availability can change.

There is no universal subscription rule for all art TVs. Samsung and LG describe different services and compatibility requirements, and their terms should not be assumed to apply to every brand or country. Check the service page and settings for your exact TV before relying on a specific free option or price.

Samsung: personal photos and select free art without payment

Samsung’s US Art TV page says compatible TVs can browse Art Store artwork, upload personal photos and select free collections. It states that personal photos and select free art can be used without payment, while premium Art Store artwork may require a subscription. The page’s wording is: “You can use your own photos and access select free artwork without paying.”

Samsung’s page, accessed October 12, 2026, lists the US subscription at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year and describes access to over 5,000 works. Those are claims for the US service page at that time, not a worldwide price promise or a guarantee that the same catalog size or terms will remain in effect. Art Mode is listed for The Frame and OLED S95H, with availability varying by model year and region.

Using your own images on a supported Samsung TV

Samsung support describes two ways to add personal images to The Frame: through SmartThings or by USB. The exact menus and controls can vary, so follow the instructions for your model and software version rather than expecting every TV to have identical options.

  1. Check compatibility first. Confirm that your TV supports the relevant art feature and personal-photo workflow. Availability can differ by model and region.
  2. Choose a transfer method. Use SmartThings or USB, the methods Samsung support documents for adding photos to The Frame. Prepare the images on the device you intend to use.
  3. Follow the TV’s current prompts. Open the photo or art controls shown for your model and complete the transfer. Samsung’s support material describes the transfer routes; it does not establish that every software version has identical slideshow or collection controls.
  4. Confirm the image appears in the TV’s art experience. Select it using the controls available on your model. If you want automatic rotation, check the TV’s own current menus for slideshow settings rather than assuming a particular option or behavior.

Samsung support also says an owner can subscribe from the TV by opening Art Store and selecting Membership. That is a route to membership, not a prerequisite for using personal photos or select free art on a supported setup.

LG: Gallery+ depends on model and webOS support

LG’s Gallery+ is a separate manufacturer service. Its service page describes support for photos from external devices, connected mobile devices through LG ThinQ, or Google Photos. It also advertises a one-month free trial for subscription customers. Trial eligibility and terms may vary, so verify what appears for your country and account.

LG’s corporate announcement dated May 18, 2026 describes Gallery+ as subscription-based on LG Smart TVs running webOS 25 and above. It says this includes older TV models upgraded to webOS 25, and describes a catalog of more than 5,000 curated artworks. The announcement names the 2026 art-TV lineup, but it does not make Gallery+ availability universal across all TVs, regions or software configurations.

LG’s description of photo sources means owners have ways to bring personal images into Gallery+. However, the information here does not establish that every personal-photo feature is free in every country or configuration. Check the local Gallery+ terms and the TV’s settings before assuming that a particular source, feature or catalog access continues without payment.

How to decide whether you need to pay

If you only want your own photos on screen

Start with your exact model’s support instructions. On compatible Samsung setups, Samsung says personal photos can be used without payment and documents SmartThings and USB as transfer methods for The Frame. For LG, check Gallery+ and your local service terms to understand the conditions attached to personal-photo sources. Do not infer the price of a feature solely from the fact that it appears in a subscription service.

If free art is enough

Check the TV’s current free selections before subscribing. Samsung explicitly describes select free artwork, but “select” is important: it does not mean the whole Art Store is free. The available selection can also change, so confirm the choices on your own TV or the manufacturer’s local service page.

If you want a particular work or a broad catalog

Look up the work or catalog access in the service itself, then review the subscription terms shown for your country. A premium catalog is relevant if the image you want is not included in the free selection or you want the range of a curated library. Catalog-size figures are not a promise that every work is available in every location or at all times.

If you are evaluating a free trial

LG’s US service page advertises a one-month trial for subscription customers as of October 12, 2026. Check eligibility, renewal and cancellation terms as presented for your account before starting. Do not assume a trial is available in every country or on every supported model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check before cancelling or subscribing

Use the TV’s service page and membership screen as the source for current local terms. A general product page can help explain the feature, but the options presented for your TV and region determine what you can actually access.

  • Exact TV model and year: Verify that its art feature and image-transfer options are supported.
  • Software version: This is particularly important for LG Gallery+, which LG describes for webOS 25 and above.
  • Country or region: Prices, trials, catalogs and supported models can differ by market.
  • What you want to display: Separate personal images, free selections and premium catalog works; they may have different access conditions.
  • Renewal terms: If you start a trial or paid plan, check the price, billing frequency and cancellation instructions shown at enrollment.

If you are considering cancellation, first identify whether your images come from a personal-photo feature or from the paid catalog. Samsung’s published distinction says its personal photos and select free art do not require payment on compatible TVs; premium Art Store artwork may. The available service descriptions do not establish what every TV does with every saved image or catalog selection after a membership ends. Check the account terms or ask the manufacturer before assuming that previously selected premium works remain available.

Common misunderstandings

  • “Art mode means a paid catalog.” Not necessarily. The display feature and the paid image library are distinct; Samsung specifically describes no-cost personal photos and select free art.
  • “If personal photos are supported, they must be free.” That conclusion is not established for every brand or service. Check the relevant local terms, especially for subscription-based services.
  • “A catalog with thousands of works includes every work everywhere.” Catalog-size statements do not establish universal availability, and the number may change.
  • “The same steps work on every model.” Transfer paths, menus and slideshow controls can depend on model and software. Use the support instructions for the specific TV.
  • “A trial or price applies globally.” The cited Samsung price is for its US service page; the cited LG trial is from its US Gallery+ page. Neither should be treated as a global guarantee.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
