An archived Facebook post is visible only to you, the account owner, while it sits in Archive. That means it shouldn’t appear in other people’s Feeds. If you restore it, Facebook’s guidance says it returns to the audience you had selected before archiving. Restoring does not make it public, and nothing guarantees it will show up in everyone’s Feed again.

People searching this topic usually mean one of two things, and the answers differ:

- “Why is a post missing from my Feed?” This is about your viewing preferences, which are a separate set of controls.
What happens to a post you archive
Archiving is a content-management action taken by the post’s owner. The wording that describes it says content moved to Archive is visible only to the account owner. It says restored content becomes visible again to the audience selected before the move.

A note on provenance: Facebook’s Help Center pages on Feed, privacy and tagging were retrievable, but a Facebook page devoted to Archive was not. The exact archive wording comes from a guidance document published by the North Carolina School Boards Association (a PDF dated August 2024, “Oh No You Didn’t: Guidelines for Employees use of Social Media”), which reproduces Facebook’s text. Menu names and layouts can differ between app versions and regions, so check your own app.

What restoring does and does not do
- It returns the post to the audience it had before archiving, such as Friends, a custom list or Public.
- A post that was limited to a small audience stays limited.
- Facebook’s guidance doesn’t say how Feed ranking treats a restored post. Don’t assume it will reappear at the top of anyone’s Feed, or in their Feed at all.
Where archiving lives, and where Feed controls live

If a post is missing from your Feed
Hiding a story or reducing posts from a source only changes your own viewing experience. It doesn’t show that the author archived or deleted the post. If you can’t find something, consider these possibilities before concluding it was archived:
- You hid that story or asked to see fewer posts from that person, Page or group.
- The post’s audience doesn’t include you.
- The author archived it. This is possible, but nothing in the Feed tools lets you confirm it.
To review your own hidden or archived items, use Activity Log and Manage Activity rather than Feed preferences.

Tagged posts are different
If you’re tagged in someone else’s post, hiding it from your profile or changing a Feed preference doesn’t remove it for everyone. Facebook says visibility depends on the original poster’s selected audience and your Profile and tagging settings. Eligible viewers may see such posts in Feed, search and other places. Archiving only applies to posts you own, so it won’t pull down a post someone else made.

Practical checklist
- To keep a post out of everyone’s view temporarily, move it to Archive from your own post management tools.
- Before restoring, check what audience the post had, because that is what returns.
- If you want a different audience, change the post’s audience after restoring rather than assuming restoring will widen it.
- For tagged posts, adjust your tagging and profile settings, or ask the original poster to change the audience.
