Most Mac users do not automatically need to install a separate antivirus app. macOS already includes protections such as XProtect, Gatekeeper, and notarisation. Those tools reduce risk, but they are not a guarantee against every threat, and they do not make Macs immune to malware. Keep macOS and its security features current, take care with unfamiliar downloads, and consider additional security software only if its capabilities match a specific need.
What antivirus protection does macOS include?
Apple describes macOS security as a set of layers rather than a single antivirus scanner. The App Store and Gatekeeper help prevent unsafe software from launching; Gatekeeper, notarisation, and XProtect help block malicious software; and XProtect can help remediate malware that has run.

Apple’s App security overview, published January 28, 2026, characterizes the built-in protection this way: “Second, macOS includes state-of-the-art antivirus protection to block — and if necessary remove — malware.” That is Apple’s description of its platform, not an independent comparison of Mac security products.

XProtect is Apple’s built-in antivirus technology. Apple says it uses YARA signatures that are updated automatically. It checks apps when they are first launched, when an app changes in the file system, and when XProtect signatures update. When it detects known malware, XProtect can block it; Apple also documents the ability to move a detected item to the Bin and alert the user, as well as an XProtect remediation engine.
#1 Best Overall
- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
These are documented capabilities, not a promise that XProtect will identify every new, modified, or otherwise unknown threat.
Gatekeeper and notarisation
Gatekeeper checks apps, plug-ins, and installer packages downloaded from outside the App Store. Apple says it checks whether software comes from an identified developer, has been notarised, and has not been altered. Notarisation involves Apple scanning software submitted by developers for known malware. Apple can revoke an app’s notarisation ticket if it later identifies the app as malicious.

These checks can help reduce risk, but they cannot establish that every app is safe in every respect. Users can override Gatekeeper policies, so a prompt deserves attention rather than an automatic dismissal.
Other security layers
Apple also documents protections such as mandatory code signing and System Integrity Protection. They contribute to macOS security, but none makes the broad claim “Macs cannot get malware” accurate.

Does that mean you never need another antivirus app?
No. It means a separate product is not automatically necessary for every Mac owner. Apple’s documentation explains what macOS is designed to do; it does not establish an individual user’s likelihood of infection or show that every user benefits from a paid antivirus subscription.
There can be a narrower reason to consider third-party security software. Apple documents that, on macOS 15 or later, third-party security developers can receive certain events through the Endpoint Security API, including some Gatekeeper-bypass and XProtect-detection events. That supports a possible monitoring use case. It does not establish that a particular app detects more threats, that it is right for every consumer, or that it replaces macOS’s built-in protections.

What should Mac users do?
- Keep macOS current. Install system updates so the operating system and its security features can receive Apple’s updates.
- Pay attention to download warnings. Gatekeeper checks software downloaded outside the App Store. Treat an unexpected warning as a reason to pause and verify the source.
- Be selective about what you open. Do not launch unfamiliar apps, plug-ins, or installers unless you trust where they came from and understand why you need them.
- Do not override a security prompt casually. Before proceeding, check the developer and the download’s origin. If you cannot verify them, do not bypass the warning.
How to decide whether third-party protection fits your needs
Consider an additional product only after identifying what you want it to do beyond the protections already in macOS. Compare options using criteria that can be verified for the current version and your Mac:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Compatibility: Does the product support your macOS version and hardware?
- Protection scope: What does it detect, and what actions can it take when it finds something?
- Privacy: What information does it collect, transmit, or retain, according to its privacy documentation?
- System impact: What do credible, independent tests report about its effect on performance and usability?
- Total price: What will it cost after any introductory period, and which features require a paid plan?
Apple’s Endpoint Security API documentation shows that third-party monitoring is possible, but it does not answer these product-by-product questions. Apple’s reviewed materials also provide no malware-prevalence statistic that can determine whether a particular person needs extra protection. Without current independent tests and vendor documentation, a product ranking or claim that a paid app is necessary would not be justified.
