What Apple and Samsung are working on
In an August 6, 2025 announcement, Apple said it was “working with Samsung at its fab in Austin, Texas, to launch an innovative new technology for making chips, which has never been used before anywhere in the world.” That is Apple’s description of the work; the announcement does not identify the chip or independently establish the technology claim. Apple’s announcement also identified Samsung among the initial partners in its American Manufacturing Program.

Apple’s March 26, 2026 update on the program continued to list Samsung as an initial partner. The update confirms Samsung’s partner status, but does not provide further details about the Austin work.
What “work together” means—and what it doesn’t
The evidence supports a defined business relationship involving manufacturing and chip-making work. It does not establish a joint iPhone-and-Galaxy project, a shared consumer brand, a merger, or a broad corporate alliance. Apple’s statements do not disclose production volumes, a commercial agreement’s value or terms, exclusivity, or whether the Austin technology has entered production.

Apple’s 2025 announcement included a $600 billion U.S. investment commitment over four years. That figure is Apple’s stated total U.S. investment, not the value of its work with Samsung. The same release said Apple’s supplier and partner network supports more than 450,000 jobs across all 50 states; that is a broad network figure, not a Samsung-specific employment count.
How they can cooperate and compete at the same time
Apple and Samsung remain separate companies competing in consumer electronics. Their cooperation on manufacturing does not cancel out that rivalry: companies can work with one another in a supply chain while competing for customers in other parts of their businesses.

Their history includes a prominent smartphone patent dispute. In June 2018, Apple and Samsung told the court they had settled the remaining claims and counterclaims in the design-patent case. The settlement terms were not disclosed in the notice reported at the time. - how many chips may be made or what share Samsung may supply;
- what the contract is worth or what its commercial terms are; or
- whether the arrangement is exclusive.
Without those details, it is more accurate to call this disclosed manufacturing cooperation than to describe the companies as partners in a joint product or a comprehensive alliance.
