App stores may process personal information to check age and, in some regions, share an age group or parental-consent status with app developers. That is different from sending an app a copy of an identity document. The official materials discussed here do not establish a single retention period—or a universal promise to delete the original evidence—for Apple, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore. Rules and account behavior depend on the platform, account, and location.
What information might be involved?
It helps to separate three things that are often blurred together:
- Verification information: information a store processes to establish an age or parental consent. The public materials described here do not specify identical inputs for every platform.
- An age signal: information a store may pass to an app, such as an age band, age category, verification or supervision status, or parental-consent status. An app can use this signal to apply age-related restrictions or settings.
- Retention of the evidence: how long the store keeps the underlying documents or other verification material. The platform documentation cited below does not provide a universal answer to this question.
A developer receiving an age signal does not, by itself, mean that the developer receives a copy of an ID or the original proof used to verify age.
What Texas law requires
Texas Business and Commerce Code Chapter 121 took effect on January 1, 2026. It requires app-store operators to make current age-category and parental-consent information available to app developers. It also requires stores to limit collection and processing to the minimum necessary for age verification, parental consent, and compliance records, and to use industry-standard encryption when transmitting personal data. The law restricts stores from disclosing age-verification personal data except for developer access required by the chapter or as otherwise required by law. The statute is clearer about what developers must do with information they receive: they may use it only for age-related restrictions, legal compliance, and safety-related features and settings, and must delete personal data received from the store when verification is complete. That developer deletion rule is not a statement that the store must delete its underlying verification evidence at the same time.

Apple: optional in general, with a Texas exception
Apple’s developer FAQ describes the Declared Age Range API and says age information is shared when a child or parent chooses to share it, subject to regional requirements. Its general description allows adults and teens outside Family Sharing to choose whether to share an age range; Apple says it shares age categories where legally required. For new Apple Accounts created in Texas on or after June 4, 2026, Apple’s Texas-specific guidance says developers receive age ranges and users cannot turn that sharing off. Apple also says users under 18 must be in a Family Sharing group. These details apply to the accounts and dates Apple specifies, not to every Apple account everywhere. Google Play: age-related signals, not necessarily source documents
Google’s Play Age Signals API documentation describes age ranges and verification or supervision status for eligible developers in covered US states. It does not say that developers receive the identity documents or other original evidence used by Google to verify age. The page also does not set out a comprehensive retention period for those source materials. Check Google Play’s guidance on changes for applicable US states for current coverage and requirements.

Amazon Appstore: API responses vary by jurisdiction
Amazon’s GetUserAgeData API documentation describes age ranges and, for users under 18, parental-consent status in applicable jurisdictions. It also describes an anonymous app-level identifier for supervised profiles. The documentation does not establish how long Amazon retains the evidence used to produce these responses. How long do stores keep the original verification information?
The official materials cited here do not establish a common retention period for Apple, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore, or a universal rule that each store deletes all original verification evidence after checking age. A rule governing the developer’s use or deletion of information received from a store answers a different question from how long the store itself retains source material.

So the careful answer is that retention depends on the platform’s applicable policies and legal obligations, and a fixed period is not stated in the cited materials. Do not infer that an app has received your ID just because a store has verified your age or provided an age signal.

Age-assurance laws and their implementation can change, and coverage may depend on where an account is identified as being used, when it was created, and the platform’s eligibility rules. As of the cited Amazon documentation, last updated July 17, 2026, Texas was in effect, while implementation dates for Utah and Louisiana were listed as May 6, 2027 and July 1, 2027 respectively. Google’s page also described Texas as in effect following an appeals-court stay of a preliminary injunction. These are time-sensitive status details, not permanent schedules; consult the linked platform pages and current law for changes.
