No. You can start playing a 4X strategy game without paid DLC, and there is no add-on that should automatically be your first purchase across every game. Begin with the edition you own, check what it includes today, and add content only when you know which mechanics, factions, or themes you want.
Why there is no universal first DLC
“4X DLC” is not one interchangeable product. Add-ons may introduce new systems, factions or leaders, story and exploration content, or cosmetic options. The right first purchase depends on what you want to change about the game, what your edition already contains, and what you own on your chosen platform.

Older recommendations can also become outdated when a publisher adds an expansion to a base game or changes its editions. Check the current store listing before treating any guide’s “must-buy” as still necessary.

What to buy first in specific 4X games
Stellaris: check whether the old recommendation is already included
Utopia was long the community’s near-unanimous first-DLC recommendation, according to Paradox Interactive’s March 19, 2026 announcement. But that is historical advice, not a current reason to buy it separately: Paradox said Utopia, Synthetic Dawn, and the Humanoids Species Pack would enter the base game on May 11, 2026. That date has passed. Check the edition and store listing for your platform to confirm what is included before paying for any of those add-ons.

- Add a blue disc to block opponents and lift discs higher
- Features blue Blocker Disc: This game includes blue Blocker Disc that open doors to new strategies
- Features blue Blocker Dics: this game includes blue Blocker Dics that open doors to new strategies
Stellaris has expansions, story packs, species packs, and an expansion subscription. Its Steam listing also describes free updates as part of the active game. Treat each paid option as a choice about the content you want, rather than assuming the whole catalog is required.
Civilization VI: compare the Anthology Upgrade against what you own
The official 2K Store listing for the Anthology Upgrade describes it as the complete collection of Civilization VI content and says it upgrades the base game. It includes Rise and Fall, Gathering Storm, six DLC packs, the New Frontier Pass, and the Leader Pass for Anthology owners. The upgrade requires the base game, and 2K warns that people who already own standalone content should not buy it because they may be charged twice.

Total War: WARHAMMER: try a specific entry point before expanding your collection
SEGA Support’s FAQ, updated September 24, 2026, says a Lords of the End Times pack can be an entry point into Immortal Empires. It also says a player can try an individual Legendary Lord before buying more, and recommends Boris Todbringer to new players. Which starting content suits you depends on your play style.

- CONTROL YOUR UNIQUE FACTION - Choose from humans, dwarves, elves, or orcs in the base game, each with distinct abilities, buildings, and playstyles.
- EPIC 4X STRATEGY GAMEPLAY - Explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate your opponents to build your empire and prove your tactical prowess on the battlefield.
- IMMERSIVE HIGH-QUALITY MINIATURES - Bring your war to life with beautifully sculpted miniatures for your serfs, warriors, heroes, and flying & water vessels.
- BATTLE WITH STRATEGIC TACTICS - Engage in intense warfare using a hidden tactics card system, adding a layer of cunning and prediction to every conflict.
- EXPANDABLE FANTASY WORLD - The highly-regarded base game can be expanded with additional factions and modules, such as Order and Chaos, for even more replayability.
Ownership affects which races and Legendary Lords you can play; factions you do not own remain in the campaign as AI. SEGA also says content must be owned on the same platform. Its ownership guidance is worth checking before buying content across storefronts or platforms.
A practical order for buying 4X DLC
- Choose the exact game and platform. DLC is specific to a game and may have platform or ownership requirements.
- Check your current edition and entitlements. Look at the base-game listing and your library for included expansions, free updates, and content you already own.
- Start with the base game or an official entry point if you are unsure. For Total War: WARHAMMER, SEGA describes an individual Lord pack as a way to try one before buying more.
- Match the add-on to the experience you want. Choose a new system or mechanic if you want to change how a campaign plays; a faction or leader if you want a different starting position or roster; story or exploration content if that is the draw; and cosmetic content only if appearance is what matters to you. These are buying criteria, not a universal publisher ranking.
- Compare bundles with your library and local store. Check prerequisites, overlapping content, total price in your region, and platform compatibility before paying. The Civilization VI upgrade warning and SEGA’s same-platform rule show why bundle contents and ownership matter.
Do you need DLC to enjoy a 4X game?
No: start with the base game or an official entry point and decide whether you want more after seeing what the core game offers. Paid DLC can expand or redirect that experience, but the useful purchase is the one that adds content you want and is not already included in your edition.
