DNS resolves names across networks through a distributed hierarchy; a hosts file supplies explicit name-to-address mappings on one machine. Use a hosts file for a small, intentional local override or bootstrap mapping. Use DNS when names must be shared, centrally managed, or updated across a changing network.
What is the difference between DNS and a hosts file?
| Question | Hosts file | DNS |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it apply? | On each machine that reads the file. | Across a network, using records served by DNS servers. |
| Where are mappings managed? | In a local text file, edited on each relevant machine. | On DNS servers; the hierarchy lets responsibility be distributed. |
| What does it contain? | Explicit IP-address and hostname mappings, with possible aliases. | Resource records, including records for purposes beyond mapping a hostname to an address. |
| Where does it fit best? | Small, stable, machine-specific mappings, bootstrapping, isolated systems, or deliberate overrides. | Shared, growing, or changing name spaces. |
Both mechanisms help a system associate a hostname with an IP address, but they are not interchangeable at scale. A hosts file is a local list; DNS is a network naming service designed to distribute information across servers. Microsoft explains that DNS hierarchy allows host information to be partitioned rather than copied as one growing flat file to every machine (DNS overview; DNS architecture).

How does a hosts file work?
A hosts file is a plain-text collection of explicit address-to-name mappings. On Linux, the usual path is /etc/hosts. Microsoft documents the Windows path as %SystemRoot%System32DriversEtchosts. A typical line contains an IPv4 or IPv6 address, a hostname, and optionally aliases; the Linux hosts(5) manual describes the format and notes that applications may cache file contents (Linux hosts(5) manual; Microsoft: Chapter 7 – Host Name Resolution).

Because the entry is local, it affects only the machine using that file. A stale or mistyped mapping can therefore send that machine to an unintended address until the entry is corrected or removed. The Linux manual describes hosts-file use for bootstrapping, backup mappings, and isolated systems; Microsoft notes that manually maintaining mappings on individual computers becomes impractical as the number of names or changes grows.

How does DNS work differently?
DNS stores resource records in a hierarchical namespace and serves them through DNS servers. Rather than requiring every machine to hold the same complete list, the hierarchy distributes responsibility for names. DNS also supports record types beyond simple hostname-to-IP mappings, which makes it useful for a wider range of network services.
DNS responses may be cached. A record’s time to live (TTL) sets how long a cached answer may be retained before it should be refreshed. That means a DNS change may not be reflected everywhere immediately: clients and resolvers can continue using a cached answer until its TTL expires or the cache is cleared. Microsoft describes caching and the Windows lookup process in its DNS queries and lookups documentation.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
What happens when a computer looks up a name?
There is no single lookup order guaranteed across every operating system, resolver configuration, and application. Local name sources, caches, and DNS queries can be combined differently, so avoid assuming that a hosts-file entry always wins everywhere.
Windows
In the Windows process Microsoft describes, the DNS Client checks its resolver cache, which includes mappings loaded from the hosts file and DNS answers retained according to their TTL. If the name is not resolved locally, Windows can query a DNS server; DNS servers may answer from cache or continue querying other servers. This is a Windows-specific description, not a universal rule for other systems or every configuration (Microsoft: DNS queries and lookups; Microsoft: Host Names and IP Addresses).

Linux
Linux systems commonly use /etc/hosts, but the order and sources used for name resolution depend on the Name Service Switch (NSS) configuration, typically set in /etc/nsswitch.conf. Applications can also cache results, so changing the file does not guarantee that every running application immediately observes the edit. The Linux hostname(7) manual describes name resolution through glibc’s NSS framework.
macOS
Lookup behavior can depend on the system resolver and application. Consult current Apple documentation or the resolver configuration on the specific Mac rather than assuming Linux or Windows lookup order applies.

When should you use a hosts file, and when should you use DNS?
Choose a hosts-file entry for a local, limited need
- You need a mapping on just one machine, such as a deliberate local override.
- A machine needs a small mapping during bootstrapping or while operating in an isolated environment.
- The mapping is stable enough that you can maintain it directly and remember to remove a temporary override when it is no longer needed.
Choose DNS for shared or changing names
- Several machines need to resolve the same names.
- Mappings change often and should be maintained centrally rather than edited on each computer.
- The name space is large or needs to be organized and delegated across a hierarchy.
In short, a hosts file is a practical local exception or fallback; DNS is the appropriate system for network-wide naming that must scale and stay maintainable.
