DNG stands for Digital Negative. It is a raw-image format with a publicly available specification, designed to store data captured by digital camera sensors before conversion to formats such as JPEG. Adobe defines it as “a publicly available archival format for raw files which are generated by various digital cameras.”
What does DNG stand for?
DNG is short for Digital Negative. Adobe launched its Digital Negative Specification in 2004 to encourage camera makers to standardize the raw file types photographers use and share. The format is intended to make raw files easier for different software and hardware to work with.

What is inside a DNG file?
A DNG can contain raw pixel data captured by a camera sensor, along with standard EXIF metadata such as the capture date and time, camera model, and camera settings. It can also include other metadata and, depending on how it was created, editing information.

It does not mean every DNG contains identical data or that every application will handle every camera-specific feature the same way.

How is DNG related to TIFF?
DNG is based on an extension of TIFF 6.0. Adobe publishes its specification so software and hardware developers can implement support. Adobe’s resource page lists the DNG 1.7.1.0 specification, dated September 2023; versions and technical resources may change over time. The format’s public documentation is intended to make implementation more accessible than a closed, camera-specific raw format.
How do you open or convert a DNG file?
Opening a DNG requires software that supports the particular file and its features. Adobe lists Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, and Lightroom Classic as applications that support DNG. That is not a guarantee of compatibility with every DNG file, camera feature, or software version, so check the application’s support when a specific workflow matters.

Adobe also offers a free DNG Converter for supported camera-specific raw files. Adobe says the converter handles files from more than 600 camera models; this is Adobe’s stated converter coverage, not an independent count of all cameras that capture DNG or a guarantee that every file variant is supported equally. Confirm support for your camera and files before converting.

Conversion may omit proprietary metadata found in a camera maker’s original raw file. Adobe says its converter can embed the original raw file in the resulting DNG to preserve that information. If maker-specific metadata, future reprocessing options, or a particular application workflow matters to you, keep the original raw file as well unless you have confirmed that conversion preserves what you need.

Adobe Camera Raw can also store adjustment metadata in a DNG rather than in a separate XMP sidecar file or Camera Raw database. Whether that simplifies your workflow depends on how the other applications you use read and write the file.

DNG’s public specification gives Adobe a basis for presenting it as useful for long-term access: more applications can implement a documented format than may support a proprietary camera format. That is an archival rationale, not a promise that any DNG will remain readable forever. No file format alone guarantees future access; preserve original files when their additional metadata or compatibility matters, and keep important images in more than one secure location.
