Black Screen of Death: What to Know About This Symptom

A “black screen of death” is an informal name for a computer display that goes black, often while the system is unresponsive. It describes a symptom, not one specific fault: the screen may go dark during startup, before or after sign-in, or during recovery, and the cause cannot be identified from the name alone.

What does “black screen of death” mean?

The phrase is used for different black-screen behaviors rather than one official, precise diagnosis shared across platforms. In a 1995 technical note, Novell described a Windows/MS-DOS error condition in which a workstation locked up and displayed a black screen with a blinking cursor. Novell said the behavior was not specific to its NetWare client and could have different causes, including a misbehaving driver or an application interacting directly with a driver. Novell’s historical explanation is specific to that period and should not be mistaken for a definition of every modern black-screen problem.

Today, people also use the phrase for a range of Windows 10 and Windows 11 symptoms. A 2025 troubleshooting guide discusses a black screen that prevents Windows from loading properly, while Microsoft Q&A posts show users applying the term to situations such as a black screen after the loading circle or a black screen with a cursor after Automatic Repair. Those examples illustrate how people use the phrase; they do not establish a single technical meaning.

What can cause a black screen?

A black display can result from a problem with the computer, its software, or the display connection. A Windows 10 and 11 guide lists possibilities including a damaged cable to an external monitor, startup peripherals, BIOS/UEFI or boot configuration issues, graphics-driver trouble, software conflicts or corruption, and hardware faults. These are possibilities, not a list of causes that applies to every incident. The screen alone does not show whether the computer has failed or what repair is needed.

  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

Timing can help describe the problem, but it does not prove its cause. If the issue began after a driver, application, update, or hardware change, that sequence is a useful clue—not confirmation that the change caused it.

Which details help distinguish the symptom?

Before choosing troubleshooting steps, note what the computer was doing and what you can see. These observations help narrow the situation without diagnosing it on their own:

  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • When it happens: during startup, before sign-in, after sign-in, or while Windows is recovering.
  • What appears: a cursor, an error message, or no visible content. A blinking cursor appeared in Novell’s historical example; a cursor after Automatic Repair appears in a user-reported Microsoft Q&A example.
  • Which display is affected: a built-in screen or an external monitor. If you use an external monitor, note whether its cable or connection could be involved.
  • What changed beforehand: a driver, application, update, attached device, or hardware change may provide context, but timing alone does not identify the fault.

People describe these experiences in different ways, including “black screen after the initial windows loading circle,” “black screen with a cursor,” and “black screen before the windows 10 login screen.” These are examples of user phrasing, not formal technical labels.

What does the term tell you about the fix?

By itself, “black screen of death” does not point to a universal fix. Troubleshooting should match the observed symptom and the device. For example, checking and reconnecting an external-display cable is relevant when an external monitor connection may be at fault; it is not a general remedy for a Windows startup problem, graphics-driver issue, or other hardware fault. A troubleshooting guide also discusses removing external devices and using recovery or Safe Mode options in relevant Windows situations, but those steps are not appropriate for every black screen. Follow guidance for your device and Windows version.

If a cable or monitor connection is a plausible cause, Norton’s Windows 10 and 11 troubleshooting guide recommends reconnecting wired connections and trying a known-good replacement when a cable or monitor seems faulty. An HDMI cable is relevant only if both the computer and monitor have compatible HDMI ports and the external-display connection is actually in question.
