If you are eliminated before extracting, you lose carried items, apart from items protected in the safe slot; some mission objectives may still count if they do not require a successful exfil.
For a first deployment, bring a basic weapon-and-armor loadout, choose a talent that fits your plan, and decide how you will leave before taking on time-consuming fights or contracts.

How a DMZ: Recon deployment works
Each run is a risk-and-reward loop: land, fight or avoid fights, loot, pursue objectives, and extract. Other players can contest the map while AI hostiles occupy areas and guard valuable rewards. Successful extraction preserves earned loot and progress. Elimination costs carried items, with the safe slot identified as an exception. Mission wording matters: objectives that do not require exfil may count after elimination, while objectives that explicitly require a successful extraction do not.
Choose a map for the pace you want

The official 101 guide covers these two maps. A separate official Rebirth Island guide describes different, map-specific mechanics: radiation closes inward from the shoreline toward the Prison, and a special Prison exfil involves using a terminal, reaching the roof, defeating Nikto, and taking the roof exit. Those instructions apply to Rebirth Island, not to the Serpent Island or Building 21 exfils described below.
Prepare a modest loadout and choose a talent
Bring the essentials
The 101 guide’s basic loadout consists of a weapon, armor, a couple of stacks of Armor Plates, several stacks of ammunition, and a backpack. If you want a premade option, Quick Fill offers loadouts during the pre-battle phase.

Match one active talent to your plan
You can level talent trees separately, but only one talent is active at a time. Choose based on what you expect to do:

- Scavenger: emphasizes information gathering.
- Assaulter: favors aggressive combat and mobility.
- Medical: supports survival, including smoke cover and revives.
Plan a route before deploying
Use the Tac Map to identify a route and likely points of interest. The official guide recommends the interactive Serpent Island Tac Map as a lower-risk way to plan movement before entering that map.

Move carefully, and spend time deliberately
Skip fights that do not favor you
Combat is not technically required for success. If you are under-geared or the odds are poor, avoid an unnecessary engagement rather than risking the run. Use cover and work through the map in manageable sections with your squad.
Balance contracts against the extraction clock
Contracts can provide goals and income, but they take time. The guide gives examples including hunting high-value targets (HVTs), searching for intel, opening safes, and destroying Atlas Corp. materials. Check the route before accepting or pursuing an objective, and preserve enough time to reach an exfil.

Loot with your exit plan in mind
Cash and valuables can support later Black Market purchases after they are extracted. Cash carried by your Operator can also be required for a Payment Exfil. That makes spending time on loot a trade-off: it may help future runs, but it is only yours to keep if you get out.
Expect attention when opening valuable containers
Larger safes sound an alarm, which can attract attention, and AI may guard valuable loot. The guide advises completing the lock-picking minigame quickly. Do not treat a safe or vault as a quiet stop if nearby players or hostiles may respond.

Prepare before challenging a boss
The 101 guide names Kui Ji and The Tank on Serpent Island. It recommends keeping distance against Kui Ji; against The Tank, it advises ammunition, distance, and cover. Avoid starting a boss fight without considering the time and route needed to extract afterward.

Extraction is a timed task, not a guarantee that the area is safe. Other players or hostiles may attack while you are trying to leave. Start moving toward an exit before radiation removes options, and stay alert until the extraction actually completes.

Pick an exit that fits your position and remaining time. Boat, Train, Payment, and Elevator exfils involve specific actions or requirements beyond simply reaching an exit, so leave room to complete those steps while defending yourself.

Read the faction or target objective closely before deciding whether to continue after a setback. A mission that only asks you to complete an action may still progress after elimination; one that says you must successfully exfil requires you to leave alive. If preserving loot is the priority, extraction remains essential either way.
