They are different kinds of gear, not interchangeable cameras: Pocket 3 has its own sensor and records to a microSD card, while Flow is a phone gimbal that uses your phone’s camera. The better fit depends on whether you want a separate camera or prefer to keep filming with the phone you already own.
What is the difference between Pocket 3 and Flow?
The Pocket 3 is a standalone camera with a built-in 1-inch CMOS sensor, a 2-inch rotatable touchscreen and three-axis mechanical stabilization, according to DJI’s product page. It records to a microSD card rather than internal storage.

The original Insta360 Flow is a smartphone stabilizer. Your phone supplies the camera and recording workflow; Flow adds a motorized gimbal, app controls, a magnetic phone clamp, a built-in tripod and a built-in selfie stick. Insta360 describes its app connection and included hardware in its Flow product introduction.

That distinction matters more than a simple specification face-off: Flow does not become an independent camera, and Pocket 3 is not a phone gimbal. Manufacturer specifications describe features, but do not establish which produces better real-world image quality or tracking in a controlled head-to-head test.

How do their features compare?
| What matters | DJI Osmo Pocket 3 | Insta360 Flow (original) |
|---|---|---|
| Camera and recording | Built-in 1-inch CMOS camera; microSD card required because there is no built-in storage. DJI lists 4K/120fps only for slow-motion mode. | Uses the compatible smartphone’s camera and phone/app recording workflow. |
| Stabilization and framing | Three-axis mechanical stabilization; 2-inch rotatable touchscreen; ActiveTrack 6.0. | Three-axis smartphone gimbal, app control and selectable gimbal modes; phone-camera functions depend on handset and app support. |
| Included setup hardware | Standalone camera, listed at 179 g by DJI. | Built-in tripod and selfie stick, magnetic clamp and cold shoe. Insta360 lists the gimbal at approximately 369 g and clamp at approximately 32 g; a phone is also required. |
| Battery figures | DJI lists up to 166 minutes, tested at 25°C while recording 1080p/24fps with Wi-Fi and screen off. | Insta360 lists 12 hours, measured at 25°C with the gimbal balanced in a stationary, level position. Runtime decreases when Flow charges a phone. |
| Phone or first-use requirements | DJI Mimo activation is required for first use. | Phone must fit the clamp limits and support the functions you want in the Insta360 app. |
The battery figures are not a fair endurance ranking: each manufacturer states different test conditions, and Flow’s runtime figure comes from a stationary, level setup rather than active filming. For Pocket 3 specifications and test conditions, see DJI’s support specifications; Flow’s figures and dimensions are in Insta360’s Flow hardware specifications.
Which is easier to carry and set up?
Pocket 3: a separate, ready-to-record camera
DJI lists Pocket 3 at 179 g. It is a separate device to carry, but it does not require you to mount a phone to start using its camera. You do need a microSD card: DJI says the camera has no built-in storage and lists recommended cards on its support page. DJI also says first-time activation requires DJI Mimo, so check current app and device requirements before relying on a particular phone for setup.

Flow: a stabilizer plus your phone
Insta360 lists the original Flow gimbal at approximately 369 g and the phone clamp at approximately 32 g. That is more hardware than the Pocket 3 alone, but the total kit also includes a phone you may already carry. Flow’s clamp supports phones 64–84 mm wide, 6.9–10 mm thick and 130–300 g in weight; these are the original Flow specifications, not Flow Pro or Flow 2 figures. Check the exact handset against the Flow Series hardware specifications and manufacturer compatibility information for the camera and app functions you plan to use.

What do Flow’s gimbal modes do?
Flow offers Auto, Follow, Pan Follow, FPV and Lock modes. The mode descriptions explain how the stabilizer responds to handle movement or maintains orientation; the choice changes the way the phone follows your movements rather than guaranteeing a particular cinematic result. Insta360’s gimbal mode guide describes each mode.

Which one should you choose for vlogging?
Choose Pocket 3 if you want a dedicated camera
- You want a camera with its own sensor, screen and capture controls rather than relying on a phone-camera app.
- You prefer a standalone recording device; plan for a compatible microSD card because the camera has no built-in storage.
- You want DJI’s listed 4K/120fps slow-motion option, with the important qualification that DJI specifies this frame rate for slow-motion mode only.
Choose Flow if you want to keep filming on your phone
- You want to use your smartphone camera and add a stabilizer rather than carry a separate camera.
- The built-in tripod, selfie stick or magnetic clamp suits how you frame and support your phone.
- Your exact phone fits the clamp and supports the app and camera functions you need. Compatibility is handset-specific, so verify it rather than assuming every phone works alike.
If you are still undecided
Start with the device you already own and the workflow you want. Decide whether a separate camera is welcome, check Flow’s compatibility with your exact phone, and compare the complete carried setup—including the phone—with the standalone Pocket 3. Then check current local prices and bundles: a matched, current regional price comparison is not established here.

This comparison concerns the original Insta360 Flow, not later Flow-family models. Insta360 lists the original Flow’s release date as March 29, 2023, on its Flow Series hardware specifications page. Product specifications support the feature comparison, but they do not establish a universal winner for image quality, tracking reliability or audio performance.
