Best Alternatives to a Used MacBook Air for Less Money

The best lower-cost alternative depends first on which software you need: choose a Chromebook for browser-based work, a used business laptop for Windows apps, or a MacBook Neo if you want macOS in a new Mac. Compare the complete cost and condition—not just the headline price—before choosing.

Which alternative fits your software?

A Chromebook, a Windows laptop and a Mac are not interchangeable just because they cost less than a used MacBook Air. Start with the applications you must run, then compare machines that can run them.

Option Best fit What to check
ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) Web apps, school portals, streaming and basic documents Required apps work in ChromeOS; update support, memory, storage, display and local price
Used Dell Latitude 7410 Windows software on a tight budget Battery, screen, keyboard, condition, seller return terms, warranty and Windows support eligibility
MacBook Neo A new Mac and macOS at a lower tier Regional price, memory and storage needs, ports, display, and comparison with used Air offers
Used or refurbished MacBook Air Buyers who specifically want Air hardware and macOS Chip generation, battery information, return and warranty terms, and price versus Neo

For browser-first school and everyday use: ASUS Chromebook CX15

The ASUS Chromebook CX15 (2026) is a candidate if your work happens mainly in a browser: think online classes, school portals, web-based documents and streaming. RTINGS named it its tested choice for a traditional clamshell laptop in its 2026 roundup of laptops under $300. That is a review’s price-category positioning, not a guarantee of today’s price, availability or a particular configuration. See RTINGS’ under-$300 roundup.

Before buying, verify that your required applications run on ChromeOS. A Chromebook is not a drop-in replacement for Mac or Windows desktop software. ChromeOS can support Android and Linux capabilities in some cases, but confirm the specific app and workflow rather than assuming compatibility. Also check the exact CX15’s memory, storage, screen and update-support details; the model name alone does not establish its configuration.

#1 Best Overall
Apple 2022 MacBook Air with Apple M2 Chip, 13-inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD Storage, Midnight (Renewed)
  • STRIKINGLY THIN DESIGN — The redesigned MacBook Air is more portable than ever and weighs just 2.7 pounds. It’s the incredibly capable laptop that lets you work, play or create just about anything — anywhere
  • SUPERCHARGED BY M2 — Get more done faster with a next-generation 8-core CPU, up to 10-core GPU and up to 24GB of unified memory
  • BIG, BEAUTIFUL DISPLAY — The 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display features over 500 nits of brightness, P3 wide color and support for 1 billion colors for vibrant images and incredible detail
  • ADVANCED CAMERA AND AUDIO — Look sharp and sound great with a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, three-mic array and four-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio
  • VERSATILE CONNECTIVITY — MacBook Air features a MagSafe charging port, two Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack

For Windows apps at a lower price: used Dell Latitude 7410

A clean, off-lease business laptop can be a lower-cost route to Windows software. Swappa’s September 23, 2026 marketplace snapshot reported Dell Latitude 7410 starting listings at $258, with most listings between $308 and $411. These are dated marketplace observations, not current guaranteed offers; a starting price does not tell you whether a particular unit is comparable, complete or warrantied. Check the Latitude 7410 marketplace listings.

Evaluate the individual machine, not just the Latitude family name. Ask about battery health and inspect the screen and keyboard; confirm the seller’s return window, any warranty, the device’s condition and whether its Windows installation is eligible for support. A low listing price can be a poor deal if the battery is worn or returns are unavailable.

Rank #2
Apple MacBook Air (13-inch Retina display, 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 128GB) - Space Gray (Renewed)
  • Stunning 13.3-inch Retina display
  • Touch ID and the latest Apple-designed keyboard
  • Dual-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel UHD Graphics 617
  • Fast SSD storage and 8GB memory
  • Stereo speakers with wider stereo sound

For macOS without buying a used Air: MacBook Neo

If you need macOS, Apple’s MacBook Neo is a new, lower-tier Mac to compare with used or refurbished Air listings. Apple’s specifications list an A18 Pro chip, 8GB of unified memory, 256GB or 512GB SSD options and a 13-inch display. See Apple’s MacBook Neo specifications. Decide whether the memory and storage suit your workload before treating the lower entry tier as a substitute for an Air.

Regional details matter. Apple’s UK specification page lists the Neo at 2.7 pounds, with two USB-C ports and support for one external display; check the specifications and configuration for your own region before relying on those details. See Apple’s UK specifications.

Rank #3
Apple 2026 MacBook Air 13-inch Laptop with M5 chip: Built for AI, 13.6-inch Liquid Retina Display, 16GB Unified Memory, 512GB SSD, 12MP Center Stage Camera, Touch ID, Wi-Fi 7; Sky Blue
  • BUILT FOR COLLEGE. AND BEYOND — MacBook Air with the M5 chip packs blazing speed and powerful AI capabilities into an incredibly portable design. And with up to 18 hours of battery life,* this thin and light powerhouse is ready to take on almost any major, just about anywhere.
  • TEAR THROUGH TOUGH ASSIGNMENTS — With its faster CPU and unified memory, the M5 chip delivers even more performance and fluidity across apps, making multitasking and creative workflows smooth and responsive. A powerful Neural Engine and next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators give you a powerful platform for AI.
  • MAKE QUICK WORK OF YOUR TO-DO LIST — Apple Intelligence helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly — whether it’s for school or everyday life. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
  • UP TO 18 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Air delivers incredible battery life with amazing performance, so you can power through a full day of classes without worrying about plugging in.
  • A BRILLIANT 13.6-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Air supports 1 billion colors, making photos and videos pop with rich contrast and sharp detail, and text appears supercrisp. So everything — from class presentations to movies to games — looks truly stunning.

Apple’s US Certified Refurbished store showed a 256GB MacBook Neo for $599 when crawled in October 2026, with a one-year limited warranty and 14-day returns. That is a volatile US listing, not a universal price or assurance that the model will remain in stock. Check Apple’s US refurbished Mac listings and compare the current regional price against used Air offers.

When a used or refurbished MacBook Air still makes sense

If your priority is specifically Air hardware and macOS, a used or refurbished Air may be the closer fit than a Chromebook or Windows laptop. Compare its chip generation and the condition information provided by the seller. Where available, review battery condition or cycle information, and check return and warranty terms. Set the Air’s all-in cost beside the Neo’s local price; a lower listing price alone does not settle which is better value.

Rank #4
Apple MacBook Air Late 2020 with Apple M1 Chip (13.3 inch, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD) Space Gray (Renewed)
  • Apple-designed M1 chip for a giant leap in CPU, GPU, and machine learning performance
  • Go longer than ever with up to 18 hours of battery life
  • Up to eight GPU cores with up to 5x faster graphics for graphics-intensive apps and games

Compare the complete deal, not just the sticker price

Entry-level laptops can save money while compromising on display quality, processing power or features such as biometrics. A used machine adds condition and seller-policy risks. Compare these factors before deciding:

  • Total cost: Compare current local prices and account for whether the offer includes a warranty and usable return window.
  • Software: List must-have apps and confirm they work on the laptop’s operating system.
  • Condition and protection: For used devices, check battery, screen, keyboard, seller reputation, returns and warranty.
  • Configuration: Check memory, storage, display and ports on the specific unit, not merely the product family.
  • Portability and support: Consider weight, battery needs and how long the device will receive relevant support.

How to choose

  1. Identify your required software. If web apps are enough, consider the Chromebook. If you need Windows applications, look at a Windows machine. If you need macOS, compare the Neo and used Air listings.
  2. Set a maximum all-in budget. Use current prices in your country and include the value of warranty and returns, especially for a used device.
  3. Compare actual configurations. Confirm memory, storage, screen, ports and weight for the exact model and listing.
  4. Inspect used-device protections and condition. Check battery information, physical condition, seller terms and Windows support eligibility where relevant.
  5. Choose based on the trade-off you can accept. A low purchase price is useful only if the operating system, condition and configuration meet your needs.

Battery-life claims need context

Apple estimates MacBook Neo battery life at up to 16 hours of video streaming and up to 11 hours of wireless web, based on its stated test setup. Those are manufacturer estimates, not a promise of your runtime. Apple says, “Battery life varies by use and configuration; see apple.com/au/batteries for more information.” See Apple’s Australian technical specifications and test notes.
