Choose the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 if you want a self-contained camera. It has its own 1-inch sensor, lens, screen, storage slot and three-axis gimbal. Choose the original Insta360 Flow if you already like your phone camera and want smoother, hands-free shooting. Flow is a smartphone gimbal, not a camera: your phone supplies the sensor, lens, recording formats and storage.
What you are actually choosing
The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and the original Insta360 Flow overlap in use cases—walking videos, travel clips, family footage, live presentations and creator content—but they belong to different device categories. Pocket 3 is a complete pocket camera. Flow is a motorized grip that holds and stabilizes a compatible smartphone.

That distinction matters more than a simple specification contest. Pocket 3 gives you a known camera system every time you press record. Flow lets you keep using the camera, computational photography and storage you already carry in your phone. The better choice depends on whether you want a dedicated capture device or an accessory for your existing phone.

What the Osmo Pocket 3 gives you
A dedicated sensor and lens
DJI specifies a 1-inch CMOS sensor and a 20 mm-equivalent f/2.0 lens for Osmo Pocket 3. Those parts remain with the camera, so the field of view, aperture and capture behavior do not change when you switch phones. DJI describes the 1-inch sensor as intended to put detail-rich imaging in a pocket-sized device; that wording is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent image-quality test. Full specifications are listed on DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 specifications page.
Integrated three-axis stabilization
The camera head is mounted on a three-axis mechanical gimbal. You do not need to balance a phone or attach a separate stabilizer before recording. The gimbal and camera are one unit, which reduces the number of pieces to pack and makes a quick recording start more predictable.
A rotatable 2-inch screen
Pocket 3 has a 2-inch rotatable display. The screen is available even when you leave your phone in a bag, and rotating it supports different shooting orientations. It also gives you a direct framing and menu surface rather than requiring a companion app for basic camera operation.
Recommended Free Tools
4K capture and 4K slow motion are different modes
DJI lists regular video recording up to 4K/60fps and separately advertises 4K/120fps slow motion. Treat 4K/120 as a special slow-motion mode, not as the camera’s ordinary 4K frame rate. If you need normal footage that can be edited on a standard timeline, select one of the regular modes; use the high-frame-rate mode when you specifically want slow motion and understand its workflow requirements.
Known storage requirements
Pocket 3 has no internal storage. You must insert a compatible microSD card before recording, and DJI specifies support for cards up to 1 TB. DJI also publishes recommended card models on its specifications page. A card is therefore part of the camera’s operating setup, not an optional convenience.
Weight and optional expansion
DJI lists the camera at 179 g. The company also lists accessories such as a wide-angle lens, mini tripod, filters, a battery handle and a compatible DJI Mic 2 transmitter. Confirm the exact accessory and bundle compatibility before buying: a listed accessory does not mean every retail package includes it. DJI’s support materials are available at DJI support for Osmo Pocket 3.

What the original Insta360 Flow gives you
Your phone remains the imaging system
Flow does not contain a replacement camera sensor or lens. It holds your smartphone and uses that phone’s camera application or supported Insta360 software features. Resolution, lens selection, computational photography, available frame rates and recording storage therefore vary with the phone model and the mode you select.
Three-axis stabilization in a phone grip
The Flow handle supplies three-axis gimbal stabilization. A magnetic phone mount attaches the handset to the gimbal, allowing you to move while the phone stays oriented more smoothly than it would when handheld alone. The mount must hold the phone securely and stay within Insta360’s published size and weight limits.
Tripod and selfie-stick functions are built in
Flow folds into a device that includes a built-in tripod and a built-in selfie stick. That combination is useful when you alternate between walking shots, a fixed presentation and a higher or farther camera position without carrying separate supports. The phone still supplies the display, camera controls and recording memory.
Phone charging is part of the design
Insta360 documents phone charging through Flow. The practical result depends on the phone, cable or connector arrangement and the power available in the gimbal’s battery, so check the current instructions for your handset rather than assuming unlimited charging during a long shoot.
Compatibility is the Flow buying decision
Before purchasing Flow, check the exact phone model in Insta360’s current tested-device list at Insta360’s Flow compatibility guidance. Insta360 states a physical range of 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width and less than 300 g phone weight. A phone that fits those measurements can still have limited features if it is not on the tested list.

- Exact phone model and operating-system version.
- Whether the phone is listed as supported, not merely within the physical dimensions.
- Which tracking, gesture, panorama, zoom or camera-switching features work on that model.
- Whether your case, lens protector or external grip pushes the phone outside the thickness or weight limits.
- Whether the required Insta360 app version is available for your phone.
Compatibility can change as Insta360 adds software support, so use the live list immediately before buying and again after a major phone or app update. Do not transfer features from Flow Pro, Flow 2 Pro or Flow 2 to the original Flow without checking documentation for the exact model.

Video formats and image quality: what can and cannot be concluded
Pocket 3 has a defined capture specification because its sensor, lens and image processor are built in. DJI lists normal 4K recording up to 60 fps and a separate 4K/120fps slow-motion mode. Flow’s ceiling is the mounted phone’s camera and the functions exposed to the gimbal’s software. A current flagship phone may offer formats or computational features that differ substantially from another compatible phone.
It is not responsible to name an overall image-quality winner from these specifications alone. Sensor size, lens design, stabilization behavior, processing, exposure, lighting and the chosen phone all affect footage. The supplied manufacturer pages do not provide a matched, independent head-to-head test. Choose Pocket 3 for a consistent, known capture system; choose Flow when the particular phone you already own produces the look and formats you want.
When Pocket 3’s fixed system is an advantage
- You want identical camera behavior across shoots rather than adapting to a changing phone.
- You need a dedicated screen and camera that can be deployed without opening another device.
- You want 4K/120fps slow motion specified by the camera maker.
- You prefer a separate camera whose recordings do not consume phone storage.
When the phone-based approach is an advantage
- Your phone already has the lens choices, HDR processing or social-video workflow you prefer.
- You want to record directly into the phone’s familiar gallery and editing applications.
- You would rather carry one phone plus a grip than learn a second camera system.
- You need a built-in tripod and selfie stick in the same support.
Battery figures need their test conditions
| Device | Published figure | Conditions stated by the manufacturer | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osmo Pocket 3 | 166 minutes | Room temperature; 1080p/24fps; 16:9; Wi-Fi off; screen off. DJI labels this a reference result. | A camera recording estimate under a low-demand configuration, not a guarantee for 4K, high frame rates, wireless use or a bright screen. |
| Original Insta360 Flow | 12 hours | Room temperature; gimbal balanced and placed on a flat surface. | A gimbal-runtime estimate under a static, balanced condition. Phone recording, screen brightness, tracking and movement affect real use. |
DJI’s test is for the camera recording under specified settings, while Insta360’s figure describes the gimbal under a balanced flat-surface condition. Because the methods differ, neither number proves that one product lasts longer in a real creator shoot. Plan for the phone’s battery as well as the gimbal when using Flow, and carry a charged spare or power source for either setup when recording away from an outlet.

Pocket 3 storage checklist
- Insert a microSD card before the first recording.
- Use a capacity supported by DJI—up to 1 TB—and select a model from DJI’s recommended list where possible.
- Format the card in the camera after backing up any existing files.
- Carry a spare card for long trips; the camera has no internal storage fallback.
Flow storage checklist
Flow does not use a camera-side microSD card in the way Pocket 3 does. The phone is the recording platform, so free phone storage, the phone’s file-management behavior and any cloud or computer backup plan determine how long you can shoot. Do not buy a microSD card as a Flow accessory unless your specific phone supports that card for recording.
Audio planning
Neither product comparison can establish a universal audio winner from the listed specifications. Pocket 3 can be paired with the compatible DJI Mic 2 transmitter listed by DJI; Flow’s audio result depends on the phone and the microphone connection you use. For interviews or outdoor speech, verify the complete camera, transmitter, receiver and phone workflow before the assignment rather than assuming a gimbal solves audio problems.
Which setup fits common creator workflows?
Travel and walking tours
Pocket 3 is the simpler standalone kit when you want to leave your phone available for maps, messages or navigation. Its integrated screen and gimbal reduce setup steps. Flow is attractive if your phone already contains the travel camera you trust and you want its photos, videos and edits in one place; remember that the phone must remain mounted and within the compatibility requirements.

Solo presentations and tutorials
Flow’s built-in tripod and selfie stick can create a hands-free phone setup quickly. Its tracking features may help keep a presenter framed, but support varies by phone and app. Pocket 3 offers a self-contained screen and camera, and DJI’s accessory list includes a mini tripod, but you still need to confirm the exact support or tracking feature required for your presentation.

Fast social clips
Flow can be convenient when your phone is already the center of your social workflow: capture, review and upload happen on the same device. Pocket 3 requires moving footage from the camera’s microSD card to your phone or computer before posting, but it keeps recording independent of phone storage and notifications.
Slow-motion action
Pocket 3 has DJI’s stated 4K/120fps slow-motion mode. Flow’s slow-motion options depend on the mounted phone and supported software. Check the phone’s exact recording modes and whether Flow’s app integration preserves them before selecting a phone gimbal for an action assignment.
Long stationary recordings
Flow’s 12-hour manufacturer figure is measured with the gimbal balanced on a flat surface, which describes a stationary support condition rather than active walking. Pocket 3’s 166-minute figure is measured at 1080p/24fps with the screen and Wi-Fi off. For a long interview or lecture, calculate storage and power from the settings you will actually use, and test the complete setup in advance.
Step-by-step: setting up Osmo Pocket 3
- Charge the camera and insert a supported microSD card. Pocket 3 has no internal storage.
- Power on the camera and rotate the 2-inch screen to the orientation you need.
- Choose a normal video mode up to the listed 4K/60fps options, or select the separate 4K/120fps slow-motion mode when appropriate.
- Set resolution, frame rate, exposure and audio options for the project; do not assume the slow-motion setting behaves like normal 4K recording.
- Balance your composition on the built-in screen, then start recording from the camera controls.
- After the shoot, stop recording before removing the card and copy files to a computer or phone. Keep a backup before formatting the card.
Step-by-step: setting up original Insta360 Flow
- Open Insta360’s current compatibility guidance and confirm your exact phone model, operating-system version and supported features.
- Remove a case or accessory if it pushes the phone beyond 6.9–10 mm thickness, 64–84 mm width or 300 g maximum weight.
- Attach the magnetic phone mount, place the phone in the correct orientation and ensure it is centered and secure.
- Balance the phone before powering the gimbal. An unbalanced phone can increase motor strain and reduce usable runtime.
- Open the supported camera or Insta360 app and grant the requested permissions for camera control and tracking.
- Test the specific features you need—subject tracking, gestures, camera switching, zoom, panorama and phone charging—because support differs by model.
- Choose whether to use the built-in tripod or selfie stick, check that the phone has enough free storage and begin recording.
- After recording, leave time for the phone to finish saving files and back them up before deleting clips or disconnecting the setup.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“My phone fits, but a feature is missing.”
Physical fit is not the same as feature compatibility. Recheck Insta360’s tested-device list, update the app and phone software where supported, and verify the feature for the exact model. If it remains unlisted or limited, treat that function as unavailable rather than assuming a newer Flow model’s behavior applies.

“The battery estimate is much shorter in my use.”
Compare your settings with the published tests. Pocket 3’s 166-minute reference uses 1080p/24fps, Wi-Fi off and the screen off; 4K, 120fps, wireless functions and a bright display demand more power. Flow’s 12-hour figure assumes a balanced gimbal on a flat surface and does not describe the phone’s recording battery consumption.
“The footage is not as smooth as expected.”
For Flow, confirm that the phone is centered, the mount is secure and the gimbal is balanced. Check that the selected app and phone model support the stabilization or tracking mode you are using. For Pocket 3, make sure the gimbal is unobstructed and that you selected the intended stabilization and shooting mode; specifications alone cannot predict results in every movement or environment.
“I bought the wrong Flow model.”
Insta360’s hardware table dates the original Flow to March 29, 2023. It separately lists Flow Pro (July 9, 2024), Flow 2 Pro (January 16, 2025) and Flow 2 (June 26, 2025). Confirm the model name on the box and documentation before relying on a feature described for another product.

Bottom line for creators
Osmo Pocket 3 is the better fit for a creator who wants a dedicated, predictable camera with a 1-inch sensor, integrated lens, rotatable screen, three-axis gimbal and microSD recording. Original Insta360 Flow is the better fit for a creator who already prefers a compatible phone camera and wants stabilization, tracking, a built-in tripod and selfie stick around it.
