There is no clinical evidence establishing that ear-cleaning videos as a category are safe or dangerous to watch, and the available sources do not measure injuries caused specifically by watching them. The risk begins when a viewer treats a demonstration as a diagnosis or copies it without knowing whether wax is the problem, whether the technique is appropriate, or whether an ear condition makes it unsafe.
Use videos as information to question, not as personalized medical instructions. Most ears clean themselves. Do not put cotton swabs, tools or other objects into the ear canal, and do not follow ear-candling demonstrations. If you have blockage, pain, hearing changes, itching or drainage, get advice from a healthcare professional or pharmacist before trying a home method.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say about ear-cleaning videos
Clinical guidance from the Mayo Clinic, the NHS and the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery’s ENT Health service addresses earwax and removal methods, not the safety of watching online videos. None of these sources supplies a rate for injuries caused by videos, the proportion of viewers who copy them, or the prevalence of unsafe demonstrations. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that every ear-cleaning video is unsafe, or that merely viewing one causes harm.

The practical distinction is important:
- Watching: You can view a demonstration without touching your ear. The main hazard is accepting an appealing visual result as proof that the method is medically suitable.
- Following: Inserting an object, pouring a liquid, using suction or applying heat turns the video into a health intervention. Its safety depends on the condition of your ear, your medical history and the exact method.
A close-up “before and after” image cannot show whether the person had impacted wax, an infection, a perforated eardrum or another cause of symptoms. A clinician may need to look in the ear to determine what is happening.

Mayo Clinic otolaryngologist Karthik Balakrishnan, M.D., puts the boundary plainly: “It’s totally fine to use a Q-tip to clean the outside of the ear. But don’t put anything into the ear hole.” His accompanying advice is to seek medical care if ears become plugged, hearing is muffled, discomfort occurs or itching persists. Why normal earwax usually does not need a video-guided cleaning
Earwax (cerumen) is a normal protective substance. It traps dust and other material, while the skin of the ear canal gradually moves wax toward the opening. New wax replaces older wax, which is normally washed away or falls out. Routine deep cleaning is therefore unnecessary for most people. Mayo Clinic explains the protective role and normal movement of wax, and the NHS says wax usually falls out on its own.
Calling wax “dirty” encourages over-cleaning. A video showing a large piece being removed does not establish that the same amount is present in your ear or that removal is beneficial. Removing visible material from the outer ear with a cloth is different from probing the canal.

The methods you should not copy from a video
Cotton swabs and improvised tools
Cotton swabs, hairpins, keys, fingernails and similar objects can push wax deeper instead of taking it out. They can scrape the delicate canal and injure the eardrum. ENT Health also warns that probing may damage the small hearing bones. Keep objects at the entrance or on the outer ear only; never insert them into the canal.
Ear candling
Do not follow a demonstration that places a lit or heated candle in or near the ear. Mayo Clinic does not recommend ear candling. ENT Health describes possible burns, candle-wax blockage and eardrum perforation. A visible residue after candling is not evidence that wax was drawn from the ear. See Mayo Clinic’s treatment guidance and ENT Health’s explanation of ear-candle injuries.
Unverified suction, vacuum and “extraction” devices
Videos often make suction devices look controlled because the camera shows only the tip and the extracted material. Mayo Clinic says many home remedies, including irrigation and ear-vacuum kits, are not well studied and may be dangerous. The NHS says ear candles and ear vacuums have no evidence of removing wax. A device used by a clinician in a controlled examination is not automatically safe to reproduce with a consumer gadget.

High-pressure rinsing or irrigation
Do not infer a safe pressure, liquid or angle from a short clip. Irrigation may be inappropriate when the eardrum is perforated, when tubes or previous surgery are involved, or when the ear is painful or draining. Mayo Clinic specifically cautions that some home remedies are insufficiently studied and advises professional guidance. Do not turn a clinical procedure into a universal home recipe.

How to judge a video before you act
There is no validated scoring system for rating ear-cleaning videos. You can, however, check whether a video conflicts with basic clinical guidance.
| Question | Safer signal | Warning signal |
|---|---|---|
| Does it put something into the canal? | It limits cleaning to the visible outer ear and says not to insert objects. | It recommends swabs, picks, cameras, tweezers or improvised tools inside the canal. |
| Does it promote heat or candles? | It explicitly rejects ear candling. | It shows a flame, heated cone or claims that smoke or wax is “pulled out.” |
| Does it distinguish wax from other problems? | It explains that pain, hearing loss and drainage can have causes other than wax. | It labels every blocked or itchy ear as wax and promises a diagnosis from the screen. |
| Does it acknowledge medical history? | It directs people with surgery, a perforated eardrum, tubes, pain or drainage to a clinician. | It presents one method as suitable for everyone. |
| Does it describe uncertainty? | It recommends qualified clinical or pharmacy advice when symptoms or history are unclear. | It uses “guaranteed,” “instant” or “100% safe” language without conditions. |
These checks are a way to reject risky instructions, not proof that a video is medically approved. A professional-looking production, a satisfying extraction or many views cannot substitute for an examination.

What to do if you already followed a video
- Stop the procedure. Remove the object or device from the ear and do not make another attempt to “finish” the cleaning.
- Do not add another method. Do not switch from a tool to drops, irrigation, suction or a candle to correct the first attempt.
- Note what happened. Record the method, any liquid or heat used, when it happened and whether pain, muffled hearing, itching or drainage followed.
- Arrange appropriate advice. Contact a healthcare professional or pharmacist, especially if symptoms persist or you have a relevant ear history.
- Seek prompt assessment for concerning symptoms. Ear pain, drainage, a new hearing change or continuing discomfort should be assessed rather than diagnosed from the video.
Do not try to retrieve a fragment or scrape away residue yourself. A clinician can examine the canal and eardrum and choose a removal method suited to what is actually present.

A plugged sensation or hearing loss does not prove excess wax. Mayo Clinic notes that earache and hearing loss can have other causes and that a clinician often needs to look in the ear to determine whether wax is excessive. The safest course is evaluation when symptoms are significant, persistent or accompanied by pain or drainage.

What home care guidance actually allows
Recommendations differ because they apply to different people and circumstances. The NHS describes an oil-drop approach for some earwax buildup. Mayo Clinic says a professional may show people who are prone to blockage how to use drops or another softening agent, while warning that many home remedies, including irrigation and vacuum kits, are not well studied and may be dangerous. Neither source supports one universal protocol for every viewer.
Before using any earwax-softening product, ask a clinician or pharmacist whether it fits your symptoms and history. Do not use drops for a possible ear infection unless a clinician recommends them. Follow the product label and professional instructions rather than a video’s timing, volume or technique. If the ear is painful, draining, recently operated on or known to have a perforation, get medical advice before putting anything in it.
| Approach | What the guidance establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning the outer ear | Wiping visible skin is different from entering the canal. | It does not justify pushing a swab inward. |
| Softening drops or oil | May be suggested for some buildup after professional or pharmacy advice. | They are not appropriate for every symptom or ear history. |
| Irrigation | Can be used by clinicians in selected care settings. | A home video does not establish safe pressure, equipment or suitability. |
| Vacuum devices | Clinicians may use controlled equipment in care settings. | Home kits are not well studied according to Mayo Clinic; the NHS says ear vacuums have no evidence of removing wax. |
| Manual removal | May be preferred by clinicians for selected patients, including some with perforation, tubes or narrow canals. | It is not a do-it-yourself technique to copy from a close-up clip. |
Why professional removal is different from a viral demonstration
Clinical earwax removal begins with examination: the practitioner looks for wax and checks for signs that another condition may be responsible. ENT Health notes that clinicians may use drops, washing, vacuuming or manual removal, selecting among them according to the patient. The choice can change with a perforation or tube, a narrow canal, skin disease, diabetes or reduced immunity.
A video usually omits that decision-making. It may not show the person’s examination, the instrument’s settings, sterilization, training or what would happen if the eardrum were not intact. The visible “extraction” is only the final moment, not evidence that the same procedure is suitable for you.
A practical decision path
- No symptoms and only normal visible wax: Leave the canal alone and clean only the outer ear.
- Mild concern about buildup: Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether a softening product is appropriate instead of copying a video.
- Blocked feeling, muffled hearing, persistent itching or discomfort: Arrange an examination; do not diagnose wax from a screen.
- Pain, drainage, prior ear surgery or a known perforation: Avoid self-removal and seek clinical advice before using drops, water or devices.
- Any demonstration involving candles, inserted tools or unverified suction: Do not follow it, regardless of how convincing the result appears.
The central safety rule is simple: a video can help you recognize questions to ask, but it cannot inspect your ear, account for your history or confirm that wax is the cause.
Bottom line
Watching an ear-cleaning video has not been shown to cause injury, but following one can expose the delicate ear canal and eardrum to unnecessary risk. Most ears are self-cleaning. Keep objects and flames out of the canal, treat suction and irrigation claims skeptically, and obtain professional or pharmacy guidance when symptoms or medical history make the situation uncertain.
