DJI Neo Troubleshooting: Fix Pairing, Connection, and Takeoff Problems

A step-by-step DJI Neo troubleshooting guide for failed DJI Fly pairing, Wi‑Fi conflicts, controller relinking, motor and propeller checks, Restricted Zones, Beginner mode, manual-mode settings, firmware updates, and repair requests.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Most DJI Neo connection and takeoff failures can be isolated without guesswork. Start with a powered-off hardware check, then reconnect through DJI Fly’s Connection Guide. If phone Wi‑Fi control fails, update Neo and DJI Fly, restart both devices, enable Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and location services, and remove other controller or phone connections. For a no-takeoff warning, check GEO restrictions, propellers, motor rotation, Beginner/Tutorial mode, battery and guards, and—when using a DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3—the manual-mode configuration.

First activation requires an internet connection. If these documented checks do not clear the fault, DJI directs owners to submit an Online Repair Request rather than continuing to retry an unsafe takeoff.

Use this order to find the fault

Changing several settings at once makes a connection problem difficult to diagnose. Work through the sequence below and test the aircraft after each stage. Keep the same flight location, battery, propellers, phone, app version, and controller while you test so that a GEO restriction or hardware issue is not mistaken for a pairing problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Establish a clean hardware state. Power Neo off before touching it. Confirm that the battery, propellers, and propeller guards are seated securely and that both Neo and the phone or controller have sufficient charge.
  2. Check the post-start self-diagnostic result. After powering on, read any DJI Fly prompt and follow the action it requests instead of dismissing it.
  3. Reconnect using the official path. In DJI Fly, tap Connection Guide at the bottom right, select Neo, and follow the on-screen connection and activation steps.
  4. Clear wireless conflicts. Update the aircraft firmware and DJI Fly, restart Neo and the phone, and make sure Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and location services are enabled.
  5. Relink a controller if one is being used. The relink command is in Camera View under … > Control > Re-pair to Aircraft (Link).
  6. Investigate a no-takeoff condition. Check the map for a Restricted Zone, propeller installation, motor rotation, Beginner/Tutorial mode, battery and guards, and manual-mode settings where applicable.
  7. Update through a networked device. If no takeoff prompt appears, connect the phone or screen controller to the network and update both aircraft firmware and DJI Fly. DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series) is an alternative update route.
  8. Escalate unresolved faults. Submit DJI’s Online Repair Request when the listed checks do not solve the problem.

How DJI Neo connects

Neo can be operated from a phone through its Wi‑Fi connection or from a compatible remote-controller setup. The first-time setup and normal phone-control workflow are handled in DJI Fly, not from the phone’s ordinary Wi‑Fi menu alone. Internet access is required for first activation and for downloading firmware.

Phone control through DJI Fly

Open DJI Fly and use Connection Guide at the bottom right. Choose Neo and complete every on-screen connection and activation step. If this is the first activation, connect the phone to the internet before starting; without internet access, activation and firmware downloads cannot complete.

A phone that was previously connected to another aircraft, controller, or Neo can leave a wireless session in a confused state. Turn off any linked controller, clear competing phone connections, and then repeat the Connection Guide rather than attempting to force a connection from a saved network entry.

Remote-controller operation

A controller changes the connection path: the controller links to Neo, while the phone or screen may provide DJI Fly’s display and settings. If you are switching from phone Wi‑Fi control to a controller, power the linked controller off before trying to connect the phone directly to Neo. When the controller itself needs to be linked again, use Camera View > … > Control > Re-pair to Aircraft (Link).

Item Phone control Controller setup
Primary connection Neo’s Wi‑Fi connection managed through DJI Fly Controller-to-aircraft link, with DJI Fly on the connected phone or screen where applicable
Separate hardware Requires a compatible phone running DJI Fly; no powered controller should be competing for the link Requires the compatible remote controller in addition to the phone or screen used for DJI Fly
Relinking path Run Connection Guide and select Neo Camera View > … > Control > Re-pair to Aircraft (Link)
Update route Connect the phone to the internet, then update Neo and DJI Fly Connect the phone or screen controller to the network, then update Neo and DJI Fly; DJI Assistant 2 is also available
Manual-mode controls Phone control does not provide the manual-mode stick configuration described for DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3 For FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3 configurations, Custom Mode, throttle position, the start/stop sequence, C2 assignment, stick centering/calibration, and the maximum-distance condition must be correct

The table describes connection paths, not a guarantee that every controller or phone combination is supported in every region or software release. If you are comparing setups while troubleshooting, hold GEO status, battery condition, propellers, app version, and firmware constant.

Step 1: Put Neo and the phone into a clean state

Power Neo off before inspecting it. Check that the battery is installed securely and has enough charge for startup and testing. Confirm that every propeller and propeller guard is attached as intended. A loose battery, incorrectly fitted propeller, or guard that is not seated can produce a takeoff failure even when pairing succeeds.

After powering on, review DJI Fly’s self-diagnostic result. DJI’s beginner guide says an in-app prompt appears when the aircraft detects an issue; follow that prompt before trying another flight. Also check the phone’s charge, because a phone that shuts down during activation or setup can look like a failed aircraft connection.

Step 2: Reconnect through Connection Guide

Use the documented DJI Fly path rather than relying on an old saved Wi‑Fi entry:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open DJI Fly.
  2. Tap Connection Guide at the bottom right.
  3. Select Neo.
  4. Follow the on-screen connection and activation instructions.

For a first activation, make sure the phone has internet access before opening the guide. DJI states that internet is needed for activation and firmware downloads. If the guide asks for an update, complete the update while the phone or screen controller remains connected to the network.

If the aircraft was recently used with a controller, switch that controller off before attempting phone Wi‑Fi control. A powered, linked controller can compete with the phone connection and prevent the phone from completing the guide.

Step 3: Fix repeated Wi‑Fi connection failures

Update both sides of the connection

DJI’s documented Wi‑Fi troubleshooting sequence starts with software. Update Neo’s aircraft firmware and DJI Fly, then restart both the aircraft and the phone. Do not assume that updating only the app is sufficient; an aircraft/app version mismatch can remain after a one-sided update.

Enable the required phone radios and service

Before reopening DJI Fly, verify that the phone’s Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and location services are enabled. These settings can be disabled globally, by an operating-system permission, or by a battery-saving profile. Re-enable them and retry the Connection Guide.

Remove a competing controller

If a controller is linked and powered on, turn it off before attempting phone Wi‑Fi control. This is a deliberate test: it removes a second possible connection and tells you whether Neo can establish the normal phone path by itself.

Remove a competing phone

If another nearby phone is connected to Neo, disable Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on that phone. Keep only the phone you are testing active. A second device can retain the connection even when its DJI Fly screen is no longer visible.

Forget the saved network entry

When the phone keeps trying an old or corrupted Wi‑Fi record, remove that record and then run the DJI Fly guide again:

  • iPhone or iPad: open the operating system’s Wi‑Fi settings and use the control to forget the Neo network.
  • Android: open WLAN/Wi‑Fi settings and use Forget for the Neo network.

After forgetting the network, return to DJI Fly rather than manually creating a new connection. The guide is the supported route for pairing and activation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret the result

If the phone connects after the restart, update, and conflict-clearing steps, the original failure was in the wireless or software state rather than a takeoff interlock. If the same phone still cannot connect, repeat the guide once with every other controller and phone turned off. A persistent failure after that controlled test is a reason to proceed to the update and repair stages instead of repeatedly cycling power.

Step 4: Relink a controller

Use DJI Fly’s in-app relink command when the controller is powered but no longer connected to Neo:

  1. Enter Camera View in DJI Fly.
  2. Open the top-right … menu.
  3. Choose Control.
  4. Select Re-pair to Aircraft (Link).
  5. Follow the on-screen linking instructions.

Keep the phone or screen controller connected to the network if DJI Fly requests an update during this process. If you intend to return to phone Wi‑Fi control after relinking, power the remote controller off first so it cannot compete for the aircraft connection.

Why DJI Neo will not take off

Successful pairing does not override flight restrictions or hardware checks. A Neo that connects normally can still refuse takeoff when a GEO restriction, propeller error, weak GPS condition in Beginner mode, motor fault, or manual-mode setting blocks the launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the map for a Restricted Zone

Open the map in DJI Fly and inspect the zone status at the aircraft’s current location. DJI lists Restricted Zone status as the first no-takeoff check. Move only to a location where flight is permitted and follow any in-app requirements shown for that area; do not treat a connection indicator as permission to launch.

Recheck propellers with the aircraft powered off

Power Neo off and verify that each propeller is attached to the correct position and secured properly. Incorrect propeller installation is an official DJI no-takeoff cause. If a propeller cannot be secured or its installation is uncertain, stop the test and correct that condition before starting the motors again.

Observe every motor

Start the motors and watch all of them. DJI says every motor should rotate normally. A motor that does not rotate may indicate a motor error; do not continue trying to lift off while one motor remains stopped. Power down, review the self-diagnostic result, and escalate if the motor issue remains.

Check Beginner or Tutorial mode

Beginner mode can block takeoff when GPS is weak. In DJI Fly, check whether Beginner or Tutorial mode is enabled. If it is, either disable it as permitted by the app or wait for stronger GPS conditions, then retry the preflight check. This is different from a Wi‑Fi failure: the aircraft may be connected while the mode still prevents launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the battery and guards

Verify that the battery is charged and seated securely and that propeller guards are installed correctly. A low or improperly seated battery and an incorrectly fitted guard can prevent a safe launch. Resolve the physical installation issue before changing software settings.

Manual mode with DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3

Neo configurations using DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 or 3 have additional manual-mode conditions. Check each item in the controller and DJI Fly configuration:

  • Mode: confirm that the controller is set to Custom Mode where DJI requires it.
  • Throttle: verify the throttle position specified by DJI for enabling manual operation.
  • Start/stop sequence: use the documented motor start/stop sequence rather than an improvised stick movement.
  • C2 assignment: confirm that the C2 button has the required assignment.
  • Stick centering and calibration: check that the sticks center correctly and complete calibration if DJI Fly requests it.
  • Maximum distance: DJI specifies that a maximum-distance setting of 30 m or less prevents Manual mode from being enabled. Increase the setting above that limit where flight rules and the app allow it.

These checks apply to the manual-mode configuration; they do not replace the GEO, propeller, motor, battery, or Beginner-mode checks. A controller can be linked and still be unable to enable Manual mode when one of these conditions is wrong.

Update Neo safely when no takeoff prompt appears

Update from DJI Fly

If Neo presents no clear takeoff prompt but will not launch, connect the phone or screen controller to the network. Update the aircraft firmware and DJI Fly, then restart the system and repeat the preflight checks. DJI’s beginner guide states that DJI Fly displays a prompt when a firmware update is available; read the prompt and complete the update instead of dismissing it.

Use DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series)

The Neo manual documents DJI Assistant 2 as an alternative firmware route. The basic procedure is:

  1. Install and open DJI Assistant 2 (Consumer Drones Series).
  2. Power on the Neo or other supported device.
  3. Connect the powered device to the computer with a USB‑C cable.
  4. Sign in when DJI Assistant 2 requests it.
  5. Select the connected device.
  6. Choose Firmware Update.
  7. Select the firmware version offered for that device and follow the on-screen process.

After updating through Assistant 2, return to DJI Fly and verify that the aircraft and app are communicating before attempting a flight. Keep the battery, propellers, guards, and flight location unchanged while you retest so the result remains comparable.

When to stop troubleshooting and request repair

Submit DJI’s Online Repair Request when the documented checks do not resolve the connection, motor, or takeoff fault. This is especially appropriate when a motor does not rotate normally, the self-diagnostic prompt remains after an update, or Neo cannot connect after a clean Connection Guide attempt with competing devices removed.

DJI’s published material does not establish a universal repair turnaround time or success rate. Do not plan a flight around an assumed repair deadline; use the status information supplied with your repair request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the 135 g figure does—and does not—tell you

DJI’s 2024 FAQ lists Neo at approximately 135 g. That figure describes the aircraft’s approximate weight, not a troubleshooting threshold. It does not override Restricted Zone status, GPS requirements in Beginner mode, propeller installation, battery condition, or the manual-mode limits described above.

Final preflight decision

After a successful reconnection or update, perform one controlled check before normal use: confirm the correct aircraft appears in DJI Fly, review the self-diagnostic result, inspect the map for restrictions, verify all propellers, guards, and the battery, observe normal rotation from every motor, and confirm that any selected flight mode is configured correctly. If any one of those checks fails, keep Neo grounded and use the relevant correction or DJI Online Repair Request rather than forcing takeoff.
