Choose the DJI Mini 5 Pro if you want stronger image quality, a three-axis gimbal, more obstacle sensing and longer flight sessions. Choose the DJI Neo if you want a very light camera drone for quick, close-range clips—especially when palm takeoff and simple solo filming matter more than image quality. This comparison uses DJI’s specifications, not a controlled hands-on test.

Which drone has the better camera?
Mini 5 Pro: better for image quality and creative control
The Mini 5 Pro has the more capable camera system on paper: a 1-inch, 50 MP sensor, 4K video up to 120 fps and a mechanical three-axis gimbal. That combination makes it the stronger choice for detailed stills, slow-motion footage and smoother camera movement in planned aerial shots.

The Neo has a smaller 1/2-inch sensor, takes 12 MP photos and records up to 4K/30 fps. Its camera is aimed at easy personal filming rather than maximizing detail or offering the Mini’s slow-motion ceiling. DJI describes the Neo as “ideal for low-altitude filming and close-range human subject filming.”

- Ultra-Light, Palm-Sized Foldable Design - Compact and foldable, this palm-sized drone slips easily into a pocket and offers 42GB of internal storage for uninterrupted flying [7].
- 1-Inch CMOS With 4K/60fps HDR Video - 1-inch CMOS sensor captures 4K/60fps HDR video with sharp detail and vibrant colors for stunning high-quality footage.
- True Vertical Filming & 225° Flexible Gimbal Rotation - Capture creative footage with a gimbal that offers true vertical filming and 225° roll rotation from diverse angles and heights.
- Nightscape Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing [2] - Forward-facing LiDAR and vision sensors detect obstacles in all directions, enhancing safety for night flights and return-to-home.
- Upgraded ActiveTrack 360° [3] - Customizable tracking modes and enhanced stability keep subjects in focus, with faster response and safe performance for cycling and more.
How do their controls and everyday use differ?
Choose Neo for simple solo clips
The Neo is designed around quick capture: it can take off from and land in your palm, and you can use its mode button, the app or voice control alongside intelligent shooting modes. DJI says it can recognize human subjects for palm-control tracking. This makes it a natural fit for quick clips of yourself, family, pets or activities when you do not want to set up a conventional piloting session.
Choose Mini 5 Pro for planned aerial work
The Mini 5 Pro follows a conventional drone-and-controller workflow, with DJI listing active tracking. It is the more suitable camera platform when you want to plan a flight and prioritize framing, image quality and camera movement over a palm-launch experience.

Can the DJI Neo avoid obstacles?
No. DJI explicitly says, “DJI Neo does not support obstacle avoidance.” Its enclosed propeller guards do not detect or avoid objects, so they should not be treated as collision protection. DJI advises open-area or visual-line-of-sight operation for the Neo. The Mini 5 Pro lists omnidirectional vision sensors, forward LiDAR and a downward infrared sensor, but sensing equipment is not a substitute for safe piloting or compliance with local rules.
Which drone is lighter, and what does that mean for rules?
The Neo weighs approximately 135 g, while DJI lists the Mini 5 Pro at 249.9 g with approximately ±4 g variation. The Neo is substantially lighter, but the Mini’s nominal weight is not a universal exemption from registration or other rules: actual weight, battery, aircraft configuration and local regulations matter.

In the EU, DJI distinguishes C0 and C1 Mini 5 Pro combo configurations and warns that using the Plus battery on a C0 configuration takes it above the C0 maximum take-off mass limit. DJI lists the Neo as C0 (EU). These classifications are specific to the relevant configuration and do not replace checking the rules where you fly. DJI instructs buyers to check local laws before flying with either listed Mini 5 Pro battery.
Which one is better for travel?
For a trip where the main goal is strong aerial footage, the Mini 5 Pro is the better fit: its larger sensor, higher-resolution stills, 4K/120 fps video and three-axis gimbal provide more camera capability. It is foldable, but it is heavier than the Neo and requires a conventional piloting workflow.
Rank #4
- Ultra-Light, Palm-Sized Foldable Design - Compact and foldable, this palm-sized drone slips easily into a pocket and offers 42GB of internal storage for uninterrupted flying [7].
- 1-Inch CMOS With 4K/60fps HDR Video - 1-inch CMOS sensor captures 4K/60fps HDR video with sharp detail and vibrant colors for stunning high-quality footage.

- Upgraded ActiveTrack 360° [3] - Customizable tracking modes and enhanced stability keep subjects in focus, with faster response and safe performance for cycling and more.
For casual travel clips, quick activity shots or a drone that is easy to carry and launch, the Neo is the more convenient option. Its trade-off is a less capable camera and no obstacle avoidance, so keep its use to appropriate close-range settings and fly safely.
How much flight time should you expect?
DJI lists a maximum of 36 minutes for the Mini 5 Pro with its standard battery and separately reports 21 minutes in a typical-flight test. For the Neo, DJI lists approximately 18 minutes maximum, or approximately 17 minutes with propeller guards. These are reference figures rather than comparable real-world endurance results: the manufacturers’ test conditions differ, and actual flight time will depend on conditions and use.

If you plan longer sessions, DJI documents a model-specific Intelligent Flight Battery and microSD card compatibility for the Mini 5 Pro. For Neo, DJI offers a model-specific Intelligent Flight Battery and a Two-Way Charging Hub for charging and storing multiple batteries. Bundle contents vary, so check what is included with the specific package.
Which drone should you buy?
- Choose Mini 5 Pro for planned aerial photography, travel footage where image quality is the priority, higher-resolution stills, slow-motion 4K and a multi-axis gimbal.
- Choose Neo for quick self-filming, close-range personal video, palm launching and the lightest carry.
- Compare local prices and bundles before deciding. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro store listing is regional, and prices, stock, shipping and bundle contents vary; a current like-for-like price comparison is not established here.
Base the choice on the footage you want and where you can safely operate, not just the “Pro” name or the Mini’s nominal weight. Do not fly either drone where local rules or conditions prohibit it.
