Sony rates the WH-1000XM6 for up to 30 hours of Bluetooth music playback with noise canceling or Ambient Sound Mode on, or up to 40 hours with both off—but LDAC lowers those maxima to 26 and 36 hours. A full charge takes about 3.5 hours; the headphones can play while connected to power, though charging then stops at roughly 80%. They also work with the included analog cable, including in passive mode when powered off.
How long does the WH-1000XM6 battery last?
Sony’s figures are maximum specifications, not guarantees of everyday runtime or independent test results. The detailed WH-1000XM6 Help Guide operating-time table lists Bluetooth music playback by codec and listening mode:

| Bluetooth codec | Noise canceling or Ambient Sound Mode on | Both off |
|---|---|---|
| LDAC | Up to 26 hours | Up to 36 hours |
| AAC | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| SBC | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
| LC3 | Up to 30 hours | Up to 40 hours |
These are music playback figures with a fully charged battery. Sony separately rates communication time at up to 24 hours with noise canceling or Ambient Sound Mode on, and up to 28 hours with both off; those call-use estimates are not music playback ratings.

Actual battery life varies with codec, settings, and use. Sony says using features such as the equalizer, DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat, or Service Link reduces operating time; combining settings can reduce it further. Sony’s US specifications page summarizes the headline music and communication figures, while the Help Guide gives the lower LDAC maxima.

How long does it take to charge?
Sony rates a full charge from empty at approximately 3.5 hours. Connect the supplied USB Type-C cable to a USB AC adapter capable of at least 1.5 A. Sony recommends USB PD adapters with outputs of 5 V/2 A or 9 V/3 A, but does not guarantee operation with every USB PD device. See Sony’s charging guidance.
Three-minute quick-charge estimates
Sony’s estimates below apply at ambient temperatures between 25 °C and 35 °C. Use conditions can change the result, and a charger’s output and compatibility matter.

Can you use the headphones while charging?
Yes. Sony says the WH-1000XM6 can be used while connected to charging power, but charging stops at approximately 80% while the headphones are in use. Charging will not begin if the battery is already above roughly that level. Sony also warns that some functions or operations may not work correctly in this setup, and the power source or adapter can cause electrical noise.
Can you use the WH-1000XM6 wired?
Yes. The headphones have a stereo mini jack and support passive wired listening when powered off. Sony’s US listing says a connection cable and USB cable are included; the listed connection cable is about 3.94 ft long and has a gold-plated L-shaped stereo mini plug. A separate cable is therefore not required for a new US-market headset.

Wired playback with the headset powered on
When the headset is powered on and the analog cable is connected, Sony rates playback at up to 28 hours with noise canceling or Ambient Sound Mode on, or up to 38 hours with both off. These wired-use estimates differ from the Bluetooth music figures.
Wired playback with the headset powered off
Sony specifies passive operation when the headset is off. Its published cable-connected specifications list impedance of 16 Ω when off and 48 Ω when on, and sensitivity of 102 dB/mW off versus 103 dB/mW on. Sony does not give an operating-time figure for powered-off passive listening; battery playback hours do not apply to that mode. Do not expect powered features such as noise canceling to remain available when the headset is off.

Charging safety and troubleshooting
- Keep the port and cable dry. Sony says the headset is not waterproof. Do not charge it if the cable or USB Type-C port is wet, dusty, or has debris. For headset software version 2.0.0 or later, Sony describes port-abnormality notifications; if water is detected, let the port dry fully and do not connect power while an abnormality is reported. Sony says water detection may malfunction with cables other than the supplied one.
- Connect a computer directly. If charging from a computer, do not use a USB hub. A computer in sleep or hibernation will not charge the headset.
- Store it with periodic charging. Sony advises charging the headset every six months during extended storage to avoid over-discharge. After a long idle period, charging may take longer; battery-hour readings can recover after several charge/discharge cycles.
- Stay within the specified temperature range. Sony specifies 5–35 °C for charging. If an orange charge-indicator behavior suggests a problem, recharge within that range; contact Sony support or a nearby Sony dealer if it continues. See Sony’s battery and charging precautions.
- Ask about service if runtime has fallen significantly. Sony says the built-in battery should be replaced when usage hours have declined significantly and advises contacting support or a nearby Sony dealer. The available guidance does not establish that the battery is user-replaceable or specify a repair price.
