To the user, the files may appear through one file-system interface; behind that interface, the system must coordinate file names and metadata, place data on storage nodes, manage access, and respond to failures. The architecture and guarantees differ from one system to another.
What “distributed” means
“Distributed” describes where the storage and work happen: data and related services are spread across multiple machines connected by a network. It does not necessarily mean that users see several separate file systems. A distributed file system can present a coordinated namespace so clients use familiar file and directory paths while the system handles where the data resides.

CephFS is one concrete example. Ceph documents it as a POSIX-compliant file system built on the RADOS distributed object store. POSIX compatibility describes its file-system interface and behavior; it does not mean every distributed file system offers identical semantics. Ceph File System documentation (Reef)
How a distributed file system works
- A client names a file. An application accesses a path through the file-system interface supported by its client.
- The system resolves metadata. It determines information such as the file’s location and the metadata needed to access or update it. Some designs use dedicated metadata services; their organization and scaling differ.
- The client reaches the file data. Data may be divided into blocks or represented as objects and placed across storage nodes. The client or system uses the design’s placement rules to locate it.
- The system coordinates changes and failures. It manages concurrent access according to its semantics, detects storage or network problems, and may recover data or metadata when configured to do so.
In CephFS, Metadata Servers coordinate metadata, while clients access RADOS for file-data blocks. Ceph documentation also says metadata mutations are journaled to RADOS. This is a Ceph-specific design, not a required blueprint for all distributed file systems. Ceph File System documentation (Reef)

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Metadata and file contents are separate concerns
Metadata describes the file system’s organization and properties—for example, names, directories, and information needed to locate or manage files. File contents are the data applications read and write. A system can handle these two responsibilities through different services or storage paths.
CephFS illustrates that separation: it stores metadata in a RADOS pool and serves metadata operations through Metadata Servers, while clients access RADOS for file data. The Linux kernel’s Ceph documentation describes Ceph’s metadata servers as a scalable, distributed in-memory cache above the file namespace, with metadata redistribution and tolerance of non-Byzantine node failures in that Ceph context. Those details should not be assumed of other systems. Linux kernel documentation: Ceph

How placement and replication help
Placement rules determine which machines store a file’s blocks or objects. Replication keeps additional copies on other nodes; this can allow service to continue or data to be recovered after a node fails, depending on the system’s configuration and the failure involved.

Ceph uses CRUSH to calculate object placement. Its documentation describes a primary OSD replicating data to secondary OSDs and reporting completion after those writes are confirmed. HDFS provides a contrasting example: its architecture guide describes rack-aware placement for a stated replication-factor-three setup, spreading replicas across racks to reduce correlated failure risk. These are system-specific approaches, not universal defaults. Ceph architecture documentation (Pacific) · Apache HDFS Architecture Guide

Replication is not a guarantee against every kind of loss. It does not, by itself, establish protection from corruption, operator mistakes, or an outage affecting the whole site. Actual resilience depends on placement, recovery behavior, configuration, and the scope of failures the system is designed to tolerate.

Both systems distribute file storage, but their documented architectures are not interchangeable. CephFS presents a POSIX-compliant file system over Ceph’s object store and uses Metadata Servers for metadata coordination. HDFS’s architecture guide describes its own file-system metadata, data blocks, failure detection, and re-replication. The HDFS guide’s rack-aware, replication-factor-three arrangement is an example described in that guide—not a general property of distributed file systems. What to check when comparing systems
- Client interface and semantics: Check whether clients get POSIX behavior, which protocols or clients are supported, and how mounts and file operations work.
- Metadata architecture: Find out how metadata is stored, coordinated, made available, and scaled as the namespace or workload grows.
- Data layout and protection: Determine whether data is stored as blocks or objects and whether the system uses replication, erasure coding, striping, or placement awareness.
- Consistency and coordination: Establish what concurrent readers and writers can observe and how metadata or data caching is coordinated.
- Failure handling: Review how the system detects failures, recovers, re-replicates data, and behaves while degraded—and which failure scopes it is intended to withstand.
- Workload and operations: Consider whether the workload is metadata-heavy, uses large sequential files, or needs high throughput or low latency, as well as the operational complexity of running the cluster.
