But a USB-C-shaped port does not automatically support video: the source device, cable or adapter, and display must all support the intended connection.
What is DisplayPort Alt Mode?
DP Alt Mode is a way for a USB Type-C connection to carry DisplayPort signals. Depending on how the connection is implemented, the same cable may also carry USB data and power. VESA introduced the mode as a way to repurpose some or all of USB-C’s high-speed lanes for DisplayPort video and to use other USB-C signaling for DisplayPort’s AUX channel and Hot Plug Detection (HPD). VESA’s original announcement explains the design.

How does it work?
USB-C has four high-speed lanes. DP Alt Mode can allocate some or all of them to DisplayPort. Using more lanes for video leaves fewer for simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data; sharing the connection is therefore a matter of lane allocation, not a guarantee that every feature will run at its maximum at once.

In its 2020 announcement of DisplayPort Alt Mode 2.0, VESA described up to 80 Gbps of DisplayPort video when all four high-speed lanes are used, or up to 40 Gbps of video in the described configuration with simultaneous SuperSpeed USB data. These are configuration-specific figures for Alt Mode 2.0, not promises about every USB-C port, cable, adapter, or display. See VESA’s Alt Mode 2.0 announcement.

VESA’s 2014 announcement also described a single USB-C cable carrying DisplayPort audio and video, SuperSpeed USB data, and up to 100 watts of power. That is a historical standards-era capability, not a universal specification for current products. Check the specifications of the particular devices and accessories in your connection path.
Does my USB-C port support video?
Not necessarily. USB-C describes the connector, not every capability a device maker may implement. VESA explicitly cautions that a USB-C connector may not support DisplayPort. Look up the exact source device model and confirm that its port supports DisplayPort video output over USB-C; appearance alone cannot confirm it. VESA’s FAQ addresses this compatibility point.

How do I connect a USB-C device to a monitor?
For a monitor with DisplayPort input
If the source supports DP Alt Mode, connect it to a DisplayPort monitor with a USB-C-to-DisplayPort converter cable or a suitable adapter. VESA describes reversible converter cables for this purpose. Confirm the supported capabilities of both the source and the cable or adapter rather than assuming any USB-C cable will carry video. VESA’s converter-cable announcement describes this connection type.

For a monitor with HDMI, DVI, or VGA input
Use an appropriate video adapter, provided it is supported by the source and the display. An adapter cannot add DP Alt Mode video output to a USB-C port that does not support it.

When choosing the connection
- Check that the source port supports DisplayPort video over USB-C.
- Identify the input on the display and choose a cable or adapter made for that connection.
- If you need USB data and video at the same time, check how the source and accessories allocate lanes and what capabilities they document.
- Verify the complete path—source, cable or adapter, dock if used, and display—for the features and performance you need.
Why won’t my USB-C hub display video?
A standard USB hub does not pass DisplayPort connections between its ports, according to VESA. For video, connect the source directly to the display or use a dock whose manufacturer explicitly specifies DisplayPort support. Also confirm that the source port supports DP Alt Mode and that the cable or adapter and display are compatible. A USB-C connector on a hub or cable, by itself, does not establish video support.
