DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync: What It Does and What You Need

DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync matches a compatible display’s refresh timing to incoming frames. Learn what it can do, what it requires, and how certification differs from support.

DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync lets a compatible display vary its refresh timing to follow the rate at which a compatible graphics source delivers frames. By synchronizing those updates, it can reduce tearing and stutter when frame rates fluctuate. It is a capability of the display connection—not a monitor model, a promise of higher frame rates, or a feature guaranteed by every DisplayPort connector.

What is DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync?

Adaptive-Sync is VESA’s variable refresh rate capability for DisplayPort and Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) systems. VESA added Adaptive-Sync to DisplayPort 1.2a in 2014; the technology had already been included in its eDP specification. The goal is to let a display dynamically match a GPU’s rendering rate frame by frame, rather than refreshing on a fixed schedule unrelated to when frames arrive. VESA’s 2014 announcement describes the standard and its intended use.

When frame delivery and fixed refresh timing do not line up, a displayed image can tear or appear to stutter. With compatible Adaptive-Sync support, the display can time its refreshes around incoming frames. The feature synchronizes display updates with content timing; it does not make the GPU render faster, increase resolution, or guarantee tear-free output in every setup.

What does Adaptive-Sync do, and what does it not guarantee?

VESA identifies gaming with changing frame rates as a use case, and also describes lower-frame-rate video playback and reduced refresh during static desktop use as potential applications. These are intended benefits, not guaranteed outcomes for every product. Results depend on the source, display, connection mode, and implementation.

  • ASUS Eye Care Technology: TV-certified Flicker-Free and Low Blue Light help support comfortable viewing during long sessions
  • Gaming: Matching display timing to variable frame delivery can reduce tearing and stutter.
  • Video: Variable refresh can support smoother playback across differing frame rates.
  • Static content: Lowering refresh when the screen is not changing may reduce power use in applicable systems.

VESA’s 2014 announcement quotes Display Domain Architect and VESA Board Vice Chairman Syed Athar Hussain describing the aim as “a fluid, low-latency visual experience” and “power efficient transport over the display link.” Those are design goals, not independent test results for every device.

Do both the monitor and graphics source need to support it?

Yes. The graphics source and display must both support compatible Adaptive-Sync operation, and the mode must work over the connection path you are using. A DisplayPort connector by itself does not establish that variable refresh is supported. Check the exact graphics device and monitor specifications, including the resolution and refresh-rate range available in the intended connection mode.

VESA describes Adaptive-Sync as matching display behavior to a GPU source; compatibility is therefore a property of the connected system, not something a connector label alone confirms. The cited standard description does not establish model-specific operating ranges, so verify those in the manufacturers’ specifications.

Adaptive-Sync, AdaptiveSync and certification: what is the difference?

The names are similar but refer to different things. Adaptive-Sync is VESA’s term for the variable-refresh operation and its Adaptive-Sync Compliance Test Specification. AdaptiveSync is VESA’s branding for its certified-display logo program. “Adaptive Sync” is also used generically to mean variable refresh rate.

VESA launched its certification program in 2022 with two categories: AdaptiveSync Display, focused on gaming-oriented performance, and MediaSync Display, focused on media playback across international broadcast video formats. VESA said the program used more than 50 test criteria at launch. The 2022 announcement explains the program’s tiers and criteria.

In a May 2023 update, VESA said version 1.1 expanded gray-to-gray testing from a 5×5 matrix to a subset of a 9×9 matrix, and reported more than 75 certified display models at that time. Those are figures reported for 2023, not current totals. VESA’s update describes the test changes.

A manufacturer’s claim that a device supports Adaptive-Sync and VESA certification are related but not interchangeable. VESA says a product must pass the compliance program and appear on its Integrators List to use the program’s logos. Check VESA’s compliance information when verifying a certification claim.

How to check whether a setup supports Adaptive-Sync

  1. Check the display specification. Look for explicit Adaptive-Sync support and the supported resolution and refresh-rate range.
  2. Check the graphics source. Confirm that the GPU or other graphics device supports Adaptive-Sync over the output you intend to use.
  3. Check the connection mode. Verify that the selected port and display mode support the feature together; do not infer support from the presence of a DisplayPort connector alone.
  4. Check certification separately. If a VESA logo matters to you, confirm the exact display model is included in VESA’s Integrators List. Support claims do not by themselves establish certification.

VESA’s standards material establishes the need for compatible source and display capabilities, but does not provide the operating range for every model. Consult the relevant manufacturers’ specifications for those details.
