How Paint and Thinner work
Mickey’s magic brush gives you two ways to affect the environment. Paint is the restorative, constructive choice; Thinner removes or changes things. Control references describe broad categories of actions, but the named buttons vary between devices and versions. Treat the game’s own prompts and input settings as authoritative for your setup.

The original console and PC release launched September 24, 2024, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. THQ Nordic lists Dash, Ground Pound, and Sprint among its movement options in the launch announcement.
Beginner tips for using the brush and moving around
- Learn the brush before trying to move quickly. Start by distinguishing Paint’s restorative or constructive role from Thinner’s removal or alteration role.
- Read prompts at interactive elements. Check what the game is asking you to affect, choose the corresponding brush action, and observe what changes.
- Separate camera control from movement practice. The control references distinguish camera movement and aiming from locomotion. Practice adjusting your view independently of steering Mickey; the specific inputs depend on your platform.
- Add movement skills after the basics. Once movement and brush use feel familiar, learn Dash, Sprint, Ground Pound, and Spin Attack. These skills are available in the console and PC release, but the publisher does not prescribe a beginner training order.
- On PC, check whether the mouse bindings suit you. If Paint and Thinner feel awkward, inspect Game Settings > Input and verify the available remapping options in your current build.
- Use the layout made for your device. Mobile players should follow the touchscreen instructions in the app. Switch 2 players can look for the Joy-Con 2 mouse-style option if they want to try that edition-specific control method.
Which version’s controls should you follow?
Choose control instructions by both platform and input method: controller, keyboard and mouse, touchscreen, or Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 mouse-style control. The mobile release is described as touch-optimized, while the Switch 2 edition adds its own listed features, including Joy-Con 2 mouse-style controls. Those are documented distinctions; they do not establish that one input method feels more comfortable or performs better for a particular player.
