AI tools can create sexualised images of children or alter an ordinary photo to make a real child appear nude. A fabricated image can still cause serious harm. If your child is targeted, listen without blame, report suspected exploitation to the platform and appropriate authorities, and consider removal options available where you live.
How AI-generated images can affect children
Misuse can involve synthetic images or altered photos of a real child, including so-called “nudify” images. AI-related exploitation can also overlap with sextortion, online enticement, or sexualised material made and shared among peers.

The image being fabricated does not make the experience harmless. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) describes risks including harassment, bullying, emotional harm, coercion and revictimization. UNICEF says that when a child’s image or identity is used, the child is directly victimised. UNICEF also identifies sexualised images of children generated or manipulated using AI tools as child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

What to do if your child is targeted
- Listen and reassure. Tell your child you are glad they told you, that they are not to blame, and that you will help. Avoid scolding or making them feel responsible for someone else’s actions.
- Record basic information without spreading the image. Note where the content appeared, the account or service involved, and when you saw it. Do not forward, repost or show the image to others unnecessarily; seek guidance from the relevant reporting service or authorities about what information they need.
- Report it to the platform. Use the service’s reporting process for sexual content involving a child, abuse, harassment or impersonation, as applicable. Keep any report confirmation or case number.
- Contact the appropriate authorities and reporting service. If there is an immediate safety concern, contact local law enforcement or child-protection authorities. In the United States, NCMEC directs suspected child exploitation reports to its CyberTipline. Outside the United States, use the relevant national reporting service and local authorities; routes and laws differ by location.
- Ask about removal options. In the United States, NCMEC’s Take It Down service can anonymously request removal of real or AI-created explicit images from participating platforms. It does not cover every service or guarantee removal of every copy. Report content directly to the platform as well.
- Get school support when peers are involved. If the image is circulating among students, contact appropriate school staff and ask how the school will address the incident and protect the child from further sharing, harassment or retaliation.
NCMEC says CyberTipline reports are processed and made available to the appropriate law enforcement agency. The CyberTipline receives reports of suspected exploitation; it is distinct from a platform report or a request to remove content. These U.S.-based services do not replace local authorities’ role in addressing immediate safety and legal concerns.

Can an ordinary photo be turned into a sexualised image?
Yes. NCMEC describes AI misuse that alters images of real children, as well as synthetic exploitative imagery. An ordinary photo being publicly available or non-explicit does not prevent someone from copying or manipulating it.
Reduce exposure without assuming you can eliminate risk
- Review who can see your child’s photos and help your child manage privacy settings on social platforms and other services.
- Think carefully before posting identifiable images, especially in public accounts or settings where a broad audience can view or copy them.
- Explain that privacy controls reduce access but cannot guarantee that a photo will not be copied, saved or manipulated.
NCMEC recommends limiting access to images that could be misused. These precautions are exposure reduction, not a promise of protection.

How to talk with children about AI image misuse
Make online-safety conversations recurring and age-appropriate rather than waiting for a crisis. Explain that people can misuse photos and AI tools, and make clear that your child can come to you or another trusted adult for help. If a child discloses that an image has been made or shared, focus first on support and safety, not on how the image was created or why the child shared a photo.

NCMEC’s CyberTipline figures measure reports and content categorized in its system. They are not counts of unique children, incidents, or the total global prevalence of AI-generated abuse. NCMEC also notes that not every report with an AI nexus involves creating or sharing AI-generated CSAM.

The categories and reporting periods differ and may overlap, so the figures should not be added together. NCMEC’s 2025 figures are from its reporting system, not a population survey.
In a 4 February 2026 statement, UNICEF cited a modeled estimate of at least 1.2 million children across 11 countries whose images were manipulated into sexually explicit deepfakes in the past year. UNICEF says the estimate draws on nationally representative surveys of internet-using 12–17-year-olds and their caregivers, and is modeled using population and estimated internet-use data. It is not directly comparable to NCMEC’s CyberTipline counts.

How to assess AI tools and image services for family use
There is no basis here for ranking particular image-generation services or calling a named service safe for children’s photos. UNICEF warns that safeguards remain uneven and calls for safety-by-design and robust guardrails. Before allowing a child to use a service—or uploading a child’s image yourself—check its current terms and practices:
- Age rules and child access: What are the minimum-age requirements and available parental or account controls?
- Photo handling: Does the service retain uploaded photos or use them to improve its models? Check its current privacy terms.
- Misuse safeguards: What protections does it describe against sexualised depictions of children and image-to-image misuse?
- Reporting and appeals: How can users report abusive content, and what process exists if a report is rejected?
- Location and law: Is the service available where you live, and which privacy terms and legal requirements apply there?
A tool being popular or built into another platform is not evidence that its protections are adequate. Laws and available reporting routes vary by location; UNICEF’s policy recommendations are not a statement that every country has the same legal definitions or protections.

Which reporting route handles what?
- The platform: Reviews and may remove content hosted on its service under its rules and processes.
- NCMEC’s Take It Down: In the United States, provides an anonymous removal request for eligible explicit images on participating platforms; it is not universal removal.
- NCMEC’s CyberTipline: Receives U.S. reports of suspected child exploitation and processes them for the appropriate law enforcement agency.
- Local police or child-protection authorities: Address immediate local safety concerns and applicable legal issues. For a specific legal question, check with competent local authorities.
NCMEC’s caregiver guidance recommends that schools maintain codes of conduct, incident-response plans and staff training for AI-related exploitation or abuse. If an incident involves classmates, ask the school how its response will safeguard the child and limit further harm.
