Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf DISM is not working in Windows 11, record the complete error message and code, then run the image scan and repair commands in an elevated Command Prompt. If RestoreHealth says “The source files could not be found,” the repair source may not contain the files your Windows installation needs. Microsoft’s documented workflow is to run DISM, follow it with System File Checker, and inspect the servicing log if the failure persists.
Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
Before troubleshooting, note the exact code and full message shown by DISM. Open Start, type Command Prompt, select Run as administrator, and approve the User Account Control prompt. Then run these commands one at a time:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
/Online targets the Windows installation currently running. /ScanHealth checks the component store for corruption; /RestoreHealth scans and attempts repairs automatically. Microsoft says these operations can take several minutes, so a slow-moving progress indicator alone does not prove that DISM is stuck. See Microsoft’s Windows image repair instructions.
DISM RestoreHealth failed: check which repair source it can use
For an online image, DISM can obtain repair content from Windows Update or a configured source. If Windows Update cannot supply the required files, Microsoft documents using a working Windows installation or files on Windows installation media as an alternative. The source must actually contain the repair files needed by the affected installation; an arbitrary Windows folder or installation image is not guaranteed to work.

| Repair-source path | When it may help | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or configured source | Normal online repair when the configured source can provide the required content. | Connectivity and servicing policy may affect availability. For online images, Windows Update may be used unless access is limited. |
| Explicit source, such as a working Windows installation or Windows media | When Windows Update cannot provide content, or an administrator directs DISM to another source. | Confirm that the source contains the required repair files. Do not assume that any media matches the installed Windows image. |
The /Source option specifies locations for repair files. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from using Windows Update. Use the latter only when you intend to rely on another source; otherwise, it can remove Windows Update as a route to the needed files. Microsoft’s Repair-WindowsImage documentation describes source and access-limit behavior, and its Windows Update repair guidance explains alternative sources. The documented guidance does not establish one universal edition, build, language, or image-index recipe for matching media to every Windows 11 installation, so do not guess at source syntax or compatibility.
“The source files could not be found” and DISM error 0x800f081f
Microsoft defines 0x800f081f as CBS_E_SOURCE_MISSING: a source for a package or file could not be found. That points to missing repair content, but the exact error and log context still matter. Check whether the selected source contains the required files and whether DISM is allowed to use the source you expect.
Microsoft lists DISM RestoreHealth followed by SFC as mitigations for this error. Run the repair sequence above, then follow the next section to check protected system files. The Microsoft error table includes this mapping for Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Microsoft’s Windows Update corruption workflow recommends this DISM-then-SFC sequence, followed by a restart and an update retry. It applies the sequence to repair workflows; it does not guarantee that every DISM failure has the same cause or outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the error code and CBS.log to narrow the failure
If DISM still fails, preserve the complete message and inspect the servicing log at %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Search around the time of the failure for the matching error. The log can help identify which file, package, or operation failed; sharing the relevant error and timestamp is more useful than reporting only that RestoreHealth did not work.
- 0x800f0831: Microsoft associates this code with component-store corruption. Its listed mitigation is DISM RestoreHealth, then SFC and a restart.
- 0x80070005: This is an access-denied error. Microsoft advises using CBS.log to find the matching error and timestamp, then identifying the affected file, registry key, or other object and its permissions before making changes. Avoid broad permission resets.
These codes are diagnostic clues, not universal explanations for every failure. Microsoft’s guidance on common Windows Update errors gives the mappings, while its repair and logging guidance identifies CBS.log as the servicing log.
What CheckHealth says about an image
Microsoft’s image-repair guidance describes CheckHealth as reporting whether an image is healthy, repairable, or non-repairable. If it reports repairable, use RestoreHealth to attempt repair. If it reports non-repairable, Microsoft says to discard and recreate that image. That instruction concerns the image being serviced; it does not, by itself, establish that a particular Windows 11 PC must be reset or reinstalled. See Microsoft’s image repair guidance.
