DISM error 0x800f0915 is associated with Windows failing to find or use the repair content needed to fix its system image. The code alone does not reveal whether the problem is Windows Update, an unsuitable repair source, pending updates, or another servicing issue. Start with Microsoft’s recommended DISM command, check its final status, and only then choose a repair source or inspect logs.
What DISM error 0x800f0915 means
DISM, or Deployment Image Servicing and Management, repairs the Windows image. When you run RestoreHealth, it needs replacement files for damaged or missing components. By default, DISM tries to obtain those files through Windows Update. If it cannot get suitable repair content, the operation may fail. The error code by itself does not establish which part of that process failed.

Microsoft documents both Windows Update and an explicitly specified local, network, or removable-media source as ways to provide repair files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance and Microsoft Learn’s guidance on Windows Update corruption.

- 2. INSTALL, REINSTALL & REPAIR Provides access to installation and recovery options for startup failures, boot errors, system crashes, failed updates, system repair and reinstallation. Results depend on the condition of the computer and the cause of the problem.
- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Wait for the operation to finish and read the final result. Microsoft identifies “The restore operation completed successfully” as the success message; reaching 100% progress alone is not proof that the repair succeeded.
- Only after DISM succeeds, run:
sfc /scannow - Keep the Command Prompt open until SFC finishes and reports its result.
Microsoft’s step-by-step commands are in its System File Checker article.
If RestoreHealth cannot get repair content
Restart and complete pending updates
If Windows has updates waiting to finish, or an earlier update has not been followed by a restart, restart the computer and install applicable updates before trying RestoreHealth again. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance includes restarting and checking the servicing stack. If you are installing an update package manually, confirm that it applies to your Windows version and processor architecture; an inapplicable package will not resolve a servicing problem.
Specify a suitable alternate source
If Windows Update cannot provide the files, Microsoft gives this example for using a local repair source:

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to your repair source. Microsoft also describes using a working Windows installation, a network folder, or Windows media such as USB or DVD. The source must contain usable Windows repair files for the installation being repaired; the cited guidance does not provide a universal image-index command or a guaranteed media recipe for error 0x800f0915. A USB drive is only a carrier for prepared repair files, not a fix by itself. Review Microsoft’s alternate-source example and source options before selecting this route.
Choose the source based on what is available
| Repair source | When it may be appropriate | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | The computer can reach Microsoft’s update service and obtain the needed files. | Restart if updates are pending, then retry the standard RestoreHealth command. |
| Specified local, network, or removable-media source | Windows Update cannot supply the repair content, but a usable source is available. | Use the real source path and ensure it contains suitable repair files for the Windows installation. Microsoft’s pages do not give detailed build-matching rules for this specific error. |
If DISM still fails, check the logs
Look in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log for entries around the time of the failed repair. Microsoft Learn says this log captures issues found or fixed by DISM and recommends analyzing it when repair does not complete successfully. The Microsoft Learn troubleshooting article explains the log’s role.
A Microsoft Community Hub reply also suggests checking %windir%LogsDISMdism.log. Treat that as community troubleshooting advice, not a Microsoft Learn instruction for diagnosing this particular code. The discussion is at Microsoft Community Hub: Restore Health Cleanup-Image on Windows 11.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs a 2026 Windows update a confirmed fix?
No universal fix is established by the available official documentation. A July 30, 2026 Microsoft Community Hub reply attributed the problem to a June 2026 cumulative update and mentioned build 26200.8655, but that is a community claim rather than an official Microsoft release note confirming the fix or its scope. A later reply in the thread said the error persisted for that user. Do not assume that installing that update resolves 0x800f0915 on every Windows build.
